Guys, My neighbour is currently without his Vw Golf due to a total gearbox failure, the car was bought as an approved Used VW and luckily is ( just ) still within the warranty period. It has covered only 54 000 miles. He has has a load of problems with the car since he bought it, electrical faults, air conditioning faults and now this.
  • Courtesy cars 30 Dec 2000 (Forum)
On taking my car in for a service I was offered a courtesy car for the duration. Sounded good but I casually asked whose insurance applied and was told it was mine. But my insurance only covers me for 3rd party on anything other than my own car, so running the courtesy car was a big risk.

  • Hi-Viz Vests in France 29 Oct 2005 (Forum)
A warning for those travelling abroad. France now requires one Hi-Viz vest for every occupant of cars on the autoroute - a requirement not covered by the information pack provided by our lease company. Luckily I need them for work so we had the requisite number in the car.
  • Rear view mirrors 16 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Why are rear view mirrors so small? Every car I have driven has a mirror that does not cover the rear window. On the cars that I own, I am forced to buy a clip-on mirror, fixed to the standard one, so that I can have a good view to the rear.
  • Volkswagen Passat - Injector Fault 2 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Hi, I bought used vw passat 2005 2.0 tdi car from a vw dealer in london in february 2011. Before I took delivery they did full service to the car. With the car dealer also gave me 1 year breakdown cover and warranty for free. Two weeks before my front vw logo/badge came out and fallen somewhere. so I called my vw dealer to fix it.
  • BMW 320D - Warranty Woe 18 May 2013 (Forum)
Warranty/supermarket company names omitted (for now). Two years ago a bought a 100K miles BMW from a car supermarket, and along with it a 3rd party warranty specifically to cover any problems arising from the car's high mileage. In this case I was particularly concerned about the timing chain, so I think you can see where this story is headed.
  • Ford Mondeo - Ford Mondeo 1.6Tdci Engine - 2013 22 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Looking for some advice. Bought ex mobility car from a main delear last week. Have just noticed that oil is leaking from the Inlet Manifold. Local mechanic has had a look over car and advised that these engines clog up due to this oil leaking and that turbos are prone to going bang.
  • Chrysler Voyager (1997) - Voyager questions 20 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I have just accquired a  2.0 litre SE Voyager with 93500 miles on the clock and I need to clarify a few things. Firstly on the car by car reviews it states that the 2.0 litre engine is cam chain driven but looking under the bonnet I have noticed that there is a timing belt cover and not a chain cover. Does anyone know when the belt is due to be changed?
  • FIAT Grande Punto (2006 - 2009) - Recalls and insurance 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Does the fact you as an owner being aware of a potentialy, albeit very slim, chance of an accident as a result of your car having an inherent fault cause blame on your behalf?? Toyota recently issued a press release confirming along with the ABI that cover on their affected vehicles would not be affected. Does this set a precident and can we assume all cars from all makers subject to recall will not have their cover affected.
  • Ford Fusion (2002 - 2008) - 03 1.4 Water in top mounts 26 Dec 2009 (Forum)

  • Insurance - do they make it up! 29 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I'm late thirties with a full NCB, held a licence for 20 years and never had an accident, so hardly a risky driver. The irony is the car will still be left at our house and will still be covered for theft on my mum's policy and I can drive it on my own policy third party only anyway.
  • Outcome 4 Mar 2003 (Forum)
s recommendation and the backroom archive were strong factors influencing the decision to buy this car. First impressions are much better quality than the Omega (to be expected at the price), more comfortable, very economical (36 mpg so far) ,but not such a ?driver?s? car. CS
  • Taxing a vehicle 25 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Apparently you can't take the old tax disc in within 14 days of expiry to ensure continuous cover any more. Knowing my luck, plod will have me when I drive out of the airport car park on the 10th October with an out of date disc? Is this true or was the old lady behind the counter losing it?
  • Temporary Insurance 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)

  • VAG TDI engine computers 28 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Apologies if covered elsewhere. The CBCB says that the ECU in the 110 bhp TDI engine tend to fail. What it doesn't say is what age of car is affected. Is my 00W Octavia safe? thanks Mare
  • Ford luxuryKa - Messed about by Direct Line car insurance 27 Oct 2013 (Forum)
She was chuffed to bits with it, so she put a deposit down on Friday and we agreed to go back yesterday. The car was SORN'd, so we were told we'd need a certificate of motor insurance or a cover note to get it taxed. After changing her insurance, she asked for a cover note. Direct Line told her they don't do cover notes but to use the policy outline on their website from her online account, which is valid proof of a policy.
  • classic car insurance abroad 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I'm not sure if this counts as a technical query, but it's certainly giving me grief... I live in France and I am trying to buy a classic car in the UK to bring over here. Importing it doesn't appear to be a problem but I want to insure it the way I insured my old cars in the UK, ie a straightforward classic car policy. Problem is, over here classic insurance seems to be dirt cheap but all you get is the equivalent of third party cover and no agreed valuation.
  • Car insured twice 29 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I've just recently taken out a two vehicle policy for SWMBO's car and mine. Her policy had expired, but mine still has about a month to run, so my car is effectively covered by two policies for this time. I didn't think it would be a problem, but what would happen should I need to make a claim during this time?
