Getting a private reg ona car 3 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Now, I was wondering if somebody would be able to help me (I would like to start by admitting, I know nothing about cars, other than what this site has taught me!) After a lot of reading through past threads and the car-by-car breakdown, I have just purchased a second hand Saab 9-5, from a private owner. I also have a "Cherished Registration Mark" on a retention certificate. -
Ford Fiesta - Radio and display above radio won't work. 19 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I recently had to call a breakdown company, who jump started my car, due to the battery going flat. I now can't get the radio to operate, nor will it display any information, on the screen above the radio. When I press the button, to activate the radio, I get the " Ford Audio " message, but it won't go any further. -
Volvo s60 2.4 D5 - Hot starting problem Volvo S60 2.4 D5 4 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Hi, I have bought a car today, drove it 28 miles to a supermarket and went shopping. Came back out after approx 45 minutes and the car would not start. Had to call out breakdown and he managed to get it started but only after about 2 hours later. -
Chrysler Voyager (1997 - 2001) - 98 3.3 Cruise Control And Horn Not Working 8 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Hi, my sister has just called me to say her voyager has failed it's mot due to the horn not working. after a little internet research and some more questioning her cruise control doesn't work and the airbag light is permanently lit, from what i can gather these symptoms point to a fault with the clock spring behind the steering wheel, i also gather this was fixed under a recall in the usa and wondered if the same applied over here? there is no mention of the recall in the car by car breakdown but i wondered if someone such as merlin tech who posts here frequently about voyagers may know? i would ring the local dealer but in the past ive found them to be fairly unhelpful. -
KIA Sedona (1999 - 2006) - 05 2.9 Difficult starting 13 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I an having trouble starting my Kia Sedona in a morning. I have had various things checked and once warm the car starts perfectly. In the morning it turns over fairly slowly and struggles to start. The starter motor is fairly new and the battery is only a week old. I had to call out the breakdown service as the car did not start. -

Ka steering rack 9 Apr 2006 (Forum)
SWMBOs Ka in for MOT today and passed as expected. Adisory note that the rack was 'damp'! Car/Ka is 02 plate with 24k on the clock-seems a little early to be replacing a rack although the car by bar breakdown does mention reports of this. The test centre had another Ka up in the air having the rack replaced at 4 years and 5900 miles. -
106 buying tips 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I'd appreciate any pointers as to what particular faults/quirks I should be looking for (in addition, or to expand on the reports in the car-by-car breakdown). It's a 1996 Petrol (facelifted) with around 56k on the clock. In particular I'd like to know the cambelt change interval. I've been told over the phone by the local dealer that it's 72,000 miles, but can't seem to extract an age rather than a mileage. -
Help me settle an argument please 29 Sep 2002 (Forum)
It resembles a Honda CR-V so closely you have to scrutinise it with an intense scrute to notice the difference, but on closer inspection it looks a bit less opulent than the Honda. Has this, or some variant of it name-wise appeared in the EU? Looking through the Car-by-Car breakdown I thought it might be the Maverick but it seems too small for that. It is very keenly priced vis a vis the Honda which has been a huge success here particularly with women, but it seems Ford is a bit late with their response. -
Uninsured- surely I'm entitled to see the bill? 18 Dec 2010 (Forum)
My insurance lapsed at Midnight, and I was intending to buy my new policy at 7am when my wages hit my bank. Darn stupidly I drove in between. Our cars touched on a roundabout and the other driver was young and going at a fair speed- I was doing less than 35mph. The other driver over corrected and basically their car came off far worse than mine. I'm a single mum. -
Is it safe to use a jump starter on all cars ? 26 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I do not want one with an internal battery. Whilst I will probably never need to use it on my own cars I do not doubt the opportunity to use it on colleagues cars will arise. I do not expect any of my colleagues would carry their cars hand books with them and I would have reservations about jump starting say for example a year old Toyota Land Cruiser in which case we are probably back to square one and waiting for the breakdown services. -
Honda CR-V II (2002 - 2006) - 06 2.2 Dipstick 4 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Having added 5L to it and turning the motor over for 30 secs I rechecked it and there was still nothing. I then headed for home but after leaving the car in a car park for 15 mins, when I restarted it, there was a heavy rattling noise from the engine. I used the motor to get the car out of the car park and then called a breakdown truck. Still waiting for local Honda to check the car but they say it sounds like the motor is wrecked. -
immobiliser is too effective! 11 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Decided to use spare key on my GS300 since main key was somewhere upstairs in the house. Went to unlock the car by placing key in lock and alarm goes off. Got inside and somehow the alarm eventually went off. Found main key again, but car would not start. Thought battery was dead, so called breakdown people. -
Driving in Europe 26 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Afterwards, at home, I received a phone call from their agent to advise me that, really, I shouldn't have been provided with that car because, strictly speaking, the car hadn't "broken down", but that they were not pursuing the matter. It certainly felt like our car had broken down when my wife and I were trudging around Dinan. -
VW Golf mk7 2013 1.2tsi - 1.2TSI P334B Charge pressure actuator mechanical 22 Mar 2018 (Forum)
However this all seems to be for pre-2012 cars, this is a 2013 car. Do I take it to VW and pay their diagnostic fee in the hope of a goodwill fix or do I just get an actuator and fit it myself...? -
Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - Recall and database error. 10 May 2008 (Forum)
A recall notice from Renault's Director of Services and Quality was received by registered post this morning. Apparently there is "a potential for an immobilising breakdown caused by a blockage in the air conditioning compressor" which has affected some Scenic models, and they're asking us to book the car in with our local dealer at the nearest opportunity for a free inspection and any remedial work. -
New towcar - Hyundai or Kia 31 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I'm not put off by the foot activated parking brake either as I've had Citroen XMs in the past. HJ's car-by-car breakdown is helpful but the Caravan Club Tow Car of the Year mentions the Santa Fe parking brake not holding on a 17% hill and some "instability" towing. Then there's the question of old Sorento versus new Sorento. -
Mondeo 2.2 ST-D 11 Jun 2004 (Forum)
In the car-by-car breakdown, HJ notes the new Mondeo "153bhp ST TDCI from May 2004, gets to 60 in 8.4 seconds". That's almost as quick as my current BMW 330d! I know they showed this car at the motorshow, and the press release at the time said first deliveries from August. -
Jaguar x Type 2.5 - Fault list 8 Feb 2003 (Forum)
