I have a MK2 BX hatch automatic 1990 XU9 engine, I need to locate the Pressure Release Screw to change the filter in the LHM res also to change the front brakes: The friendly specialist says it's supposed to be a 12mm nut style thing at the front of the Regulator and it's not!!
  • Hyundai Coupe (2002 - 2008) - 2007, 2000cc, Speed Sensitive Wipers Function 12 Mar 2008 (Forum)
If I set the intermittent wipers at the fastest setting when driving, they will slow to a fast intermittent wipe when I stop. Is that all I can expect or will the intermittent wipe automatically speed up with car speed. Not noticed anything on my commute.
  • Nissan Micra (2003 - 2010) - Will a main dealer trade down?? 20 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I am considering trading in my one year old automatic car for a cheaper manual car about 2 years old. The price difference is probably going to be between £1000 and £1500. Will a main dealer permit a transaction like this? It would mean giving me the manual car plus giving me money back.

  • Red lights at empty crossings 14 Aug 2007 (Forum)
One of my pet hates is having to stop at pedestrian-controlled crossings where said pedestrian has pressed the button 'automatically', and crossed whilst the lights are still on green. In due course, the lights turn red, and cars are then obliged to stop at the now-deserted crossing. Whilst being sorely tempted, I have so far resisted driving through the red lights when it is clearly obvious that no-one is there to use the crossing.
  • Nissan Primera - how to Auto lock doors 18 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi, Does anyone know if/how it is possible to get the car to automatically lock all the doors once you reach a certain speed i.e. 5mph I know my friend has manage to do this with his VW Golf and BMW by hooking up a laptop to his car and adjusting a setting somewhere.
  • Honda or Vauxhall? 22 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I expect these to be about the same price (£495): 1995 M Vauxhall Cavalier 2ltr GLSi 5 door hatch back met green e/windows s/roof c/lock tow bar 11mo. MOT 5mo. tax. 1995 2.2 Automatic Honda Accord Estate (Aerodeck?), leather , air cond. 5mo. MOT, 10mo. tax. Which might be the better bet, from the point of view of running costs, potential longevity, repairability, style? Any help would be much appreciaed.
  • New split ring for Polo airbag 9 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I recently took my Polo (1999 1.4 automatic) to a local VW specialist as the airbag warning light had come on permanently. After hooking it up to the diagnostic computer they've told me that the split ring that goes around the steering column has sheared (do they mean slip ring?)
  • HGV axle raising 3 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Many HGVs have 1 or more axles that they can raise, presumably to save tyre wear when running empty. Do these lower automatically when the vehicle is loaded or is it up to the driver to do it manually? I 've seen some flatbeds loaded with goods, for example steel, with an axle still raised. Are the operators saving money improperly, as this will increase the axle loading which is what does the damage to the roads, or does the system keep the vehicle within its axle limits?
  • Rear Leg Room 31 Aug 2006 (Forum)
However, I have one son over six feet tall and another one catching him up and they are starting to want more leg room than the car provides, especially since my husband and I are tall too. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a car with a good automatic gearbox that is also very safe and has good rear leg room. Thanks for any help!

  • road tax query 6 Nov 2005 (Forum)
on the 31st of oct I found a reminder to tax a car for 1st oct, oops been running a month without tax disc, however I managed to tax it online at 11.30pm having used the 14 days grace and a bit more taxing it from the 1st oct.does the automatic fine come in to force on the first day of the next month ,in this case november and would the fact that no new style log book/reg document has been issued for this motor have any bearing on this?
  • clio brakes 25 Oct 2005 (Forum)
My wife has a 94 clio 1.4 automatic, and every time the car is driven from being stood, there seems to be a lot of travel on the brake pedal & very little braking effect.Once the brakes are pumped several times they feel fine & work well.I have had the brakes bled & pads & shoes are fine, iam wondering could the problem lie in the servo or mastercylinder,i have noticed a hissing sound coming from the brake pedal when applied, before the pedal is pumped up.
  • Buying a BMW 530d Auto 30 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I am looking to buy a high mileage automatic 530d (120k miles). It has a very comprehensive all BMW history and I notice from the file that the car was suffering from a loss of power at the end of last year and the main dealer replaced the EGR Valve Could anyone enlighten me to what this part is and whether it is common to have it replaced?
  • Leaking VW Polo 9 Jun 2005 (Forum)
It has just 2 doors and the hatch. There is no sunroof, and for what it's worth (you never know) it's a 1.4 petrol automatic with aircon. What might cause this? Any other leaky Polo experiences out there? Thanks in advance
  • Vx Omega Power loss 14 May 2005 (Forum)
When i accelerate hard the engine cuts out (down) and will not run clean unless i back off. Its ok normal driving up to 3/4 acceleration. The display reads "automatic gearbox". Ive done a blink test and number 19 comes up (incorrect RPM signal) but i think thats just a basic fault finding result. Can anyone help.
  • Terrano diesel lumpy tickover 21 Mar 2005 (Forum)
On a 1999 Terrano 2.7tdi automatic the tickover is erratic sometimes and at other times displays a "hysteresis" pattern (thrum thrum thrum like an old commercial diesel). however normal running is OK and fuel economy as normal. Car is regularly serviced so filters should not be clogged.
  • Toyota Prius II 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I have just read HJ's report on the Prius II. Long term I want to move back to running an automatic but economical car to help cope with my drive to work (32 miles each way, 16 of them in heavyish traffic). Would a used Prius be a good long term car (10 years+) or would you end up scrapping it when some of the technology fails?
  • '95 BMW Convertible Roof Repairs 12 May 2004 (Forum)
I need to find a specialist to tighten/repair the automatic convertible roof of my beloved BMW 318i. The roof jams/gets stuck when it's folding back. It appears the tensioners need tightening. Anyone have recommendations for a specialist in London? I've gone to BMW, but they're quoting £300 for the repair kit but this is mostly labour...but they won't guarantee it'll solve the problem.
