  Zero to 60 takes 9.1 seconds and top speed is 126mph. Transmission options are 5-speed manual or four-speed H-tronic automatic. Tyres are 205/55 R16s. The 1.6 will not arrive until Summer 2002. This is now down in power to 105bhp at 5,800rpm, while torque is 106 lb ft (144Nm). Zero to 60 takes 11.6 seconds and top speed 114mph.

  The entry-level petrol option is a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder 65 bhp, while the 1.4-litre 75 bhp unit from the existing range will also be available in five speed manual or four speed automatic guise. Two diesel engines are carried over from the current line-up: the 1.9-litre 64 bhp SDI and award-winning three-cylinder 1.4-litre 75 bhp TDI PD. A range-topping 1.9-litre TDI PD with 100 bhp (currently available in Passat) will also be on offer.

  There will not be a diesel at launch. What there will be is a 231bhp, 300Nm torque 3.0 litre straight-six 5-speed automatic in SE spec, listed at £32,015 on the road. Factory figures are 130mph top speed and 0-60 in 7.8 seconds. The lower Sport model will get to 137mph. There will be no manual X5 3.0i at launch.

  Daihatsu has announced another bundle of improvements to its light, quick and economical Sirion. First improvements are price cuts, bringing the 1.0EL automatic and 1.3EL manual down to £7,995 which is very fair for the spec level, performance and economy. (The 100bhp 1.3 does 112mph, gets to 60 in 9.4 seconds and can manage 60mpg on the motorway.)
