  • I don't know why I bother... 28 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Coming home tonight, I am at the head of a small queue of cars in a narrow side road, waiting to turn left into very busy and nose to tail main road. I have just reached the threshold of the junction when a big black and debadged BMW 5-series comes up on my outside and with a good proportion of his car over the centre line of the narrow road. I assume he wants to turn right -- but oh no, he butts his way into the line of cars and turn left, cutting me up.
  • Which SUV to replace diesel estate? 26 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I've looked at the VW Toething and have heard that it isn't too reliable from other owners. The ML270 carries poor tales of reliability and the BMW is a bit too "soccer wife" for me. I was going to look at the XC90, but I heard a whisper about the Kia Sorento and test drove one at the weekend. I was really impressed by the ride given that this is a 4x4 and the quality of the interior.
  • Wheel balance woes 10 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Sorry for the long, rambling post, but has anyone else had such terrible trouble trying to get wheels tracked or blanaced. I found the incompetence of the first two tyre centres astonishing. The car in question is a 2001 BMW 5 series.
  • Sports Car - Which One? 27 May 2004 (Forum)
I am 22 years old but have 5 years no claims on the insurance. The car will be used as a second car (old E30 BMW is everyday car) so doesn't have to have Honda reliablity although I don't want it to be a nightmare like Dad's Stag! I would prefer a convertible, I like big engines and English cars if possible. Four seats are not necessary but looks are very important - nothing too square and 80s!
  • Thanks to HN, thanks to you guys 28 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Thanks for the valuable advice that HN and you guys have provided me over the past few months. Last weekend I sold my 10 year old, 165,000m BMW 525 TDS Estate - Left hand drive - to my local garage owner for £2K, who is taking it to Spain as the car for by the holiday home. I am sure that with proper care and attention that engine will be good for another 100,000 miles.
  • Warranties from Used Car Dealers 31 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I bought a car from a used car dealer a few months back (E36 BMW 1999). The dealers cheapest car was about 6k and it seems a decent place. When we test drove it the airbag light was on. I obviously mentioned it and he said it would be fixed by the time I collected it.
  • Help! Balancing gone wrong! 10 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The only thing I can think of is that either the chain I went to are not very good or that the previous owner of the car (BMW 318IS E30) had the wheels balanced whilst on the car to compensate for a warped disc etc. etc. Any suggestions would be very interesting as I\'m lost!
  • Seized Clio Water Pump 24 Jan 2003 (Forum)
My son was planning to sell the car for around £300 as soon as his new Skoda Fabia arrived in March but has now decided to scrap it. Because he lives out in the fens I have lent him my BMW until he gets the Skoda -- the sacrifices we make for our children! I would be interested to hear of the experiences of others concerning extensive damage caused by such a little thing as a seized water pump.
  • £11 000 VW Golf altrnative 5 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I am about to change my car, I am self employed and drive over 30 000 miles per year, I currently have a P registered Golf 1,8 auto which I dislike driving, however I am tempted by a T registered Golf 1,6 SE I have seen offered for sale in the VW dealer at £ 11,000, Because of all the mileage I do I don't intend to keep this for more than a couple of years at the very most, and I intend hope to avoid the initial depreciation of buying new by buying "nearly new" I have generally been pleased with VWs but I realise that for the money I am about to fork out I could get into a Luxury car such as an Audi A4 BMW 3 series or a C class Merc. I have been offered £4500 for my golf with 68 000 on the clock, by the VW dealer. Should I go ahead or would I be better off in the long run with a slightly older but more prestigious car ?
  • Skoda Octavia Hatchback - Is there such a thing as an SUV for SPORTS? 12 Mar 2015 (Forum)
But it is seriously awkward to get in and only OK after a dry round. It certainly won't do for us both. So far, I have tried the Yeti, Tiguan, BMW X-3, Ford Kuga, Honda CR-V, Volvo XC60 and written off several others because the difference in fuel economy and performance from their old fashioned auto boxes is more than I want to give up. Has anyone come across an SUV that has a useful (seats up) boot?
  • BMW 528 Tourer - Dealer sold car with Speedo not working nd many ot 25 May 2013 (Forum)
Dear Forum, 11 days ago I purchased a car from a Car Dealer who told me over the phone that the car had 2 issues, namely scratches and the drivers...
  • Mondeo - £1K family cars 13 Jan 2013 (Forum)
But is 200K miles too many? I've also toyed with the idea of an old luxury car. I've seen some BMW 3 or 5 series and Merc C and E classes at my budget sort of prices. Is the German engineering thing a myth, or is it possible to find something worthwhile at basement prices? There's a few things not on my list.
  • Jaguar X-Type Estate (2004 - 2007) - Jag X type estate, good idea?? 17 Mar 2009 (Forum)
So giving it a little thought the Volvo S60 diesel would be good, but only 4 doors. V70 size just too large for the country lanes where I would like a more nimble car. BMW? Well, my chum has had endless trouble with run flat tyres etc and a completely useless dealer which has caused me to hold back there. My heart says a Merc C220 cdi would be very nice, but RWD and probably auto and a lurking rust history.
  • SEAT Altea (2004 - ) - Altea in Provence (Road Test) 8 Apr 2008 (Forum)
The car had 55 profile tyres, and it was interesting to look at the older cars and see 10 or 15 year old BMWs which all seemed to have 65 profile tyres and think that it would be pretty difficult to get them on a modern BMW. In other respects, the car was also quite satisfactory. It was quiet enough, though at low speeds the sound of diesel was very audible, and I found the wind noise produced by opening the sunroof or even turning up the ventilation fan was irritating.
  • New car shortlist - down to 3 21 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I think, given that the Golf should hold its value better then the Octavia, that I'll get a better PCP deal on the Golf. I'll keep you posted. Eliminated - BMW 320d Touring - much more expensive than the above (even the standard ES with minimum equipment), and although I tried two examples I still couldn't get on with the gearchange (notchy) and the driving position (to depress the clutch fully I have to sit too near the wheel).
  • Car Suggestions 15 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Not really dark inside  Use will be mixed short local and long family trips Vehicles I have driven and liked: Mini (the new type) Jeep Renegade Toyota Hilux Seat Mii Jaguar XJR Mercedes E class Vehicles I have driven and not liked: BMW 3 series Audi A2 Citroen AX The car will be paid for with cash and will be the main family workhorse, so should be robust and quite long lived.   I had a Renegade as a hire car last year, was convinced I'd hate it and actually found it remarkably comfortable and serene to drive.
  • Help! Which car? 8 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Usually just myself and one other person + dog in the car.  I like the look of the Audi Q2, BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, Volkswagen T - Roc and the Tiguan, and the Volvo Xc40    Any advice, on any of those would be fantastic. Best suited to my needs, best mpg, best engine/spec, any you'd avoid.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_state_car  A fascinating rundown of the major "state cars" used on happier occasions around the world reveals some interesting changes, notably BMWs and Audis now taking over from Holdens and Fords in Australia and New Zealand after their local car production came to an end. Good to see that there are still a few stately Rolls Royces, Bentleys and Jaguars around on the list, though!
  • Mazda 3 2.2 Sport Nav '17 - Mazda 3 2.2 Skyactiv Diesel Facelift issues 27 Apr 2022 (Forum)
I live in Bristol where I do quite a bit of stop start but a good 1.5 hr run at least once a fortnight to south wales. Coming from a 3.0 I6 B58 BMW engine, I really didn't want a slow petrol... I like the idea of having a diesel for the torque, economy and low RPM on long runs. I wanted a VAG diesel but they just aren't as impressive as before when they were leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.
  • Saving the day 3 Feb 2022 (Forum)
It was a genuinely great car and Rover made excellent use of its talents, producing everything from 1.4 carb 3dr shopping trolley through Turbo diesel family estate, leather clad luxury saloon, sun loving cabriolet to barnstorming 150mph turbocharged coupe. Every base was covered with a range that could attract Escort to BMW 3 series buyers. Without the R8 Rover would’ve died much sooner. Nissan Qashqai is another. I don’t rate them as reliability is poor but they caught the mood of the moment brilliantly with a small affordable family SUV that drove well.
