Truck of the Year!! 10 Jan 2012 (Forum)
The Range Rover Evoque has been named the 2012 North American Truck of the Year, the first time the award has been won by a model with a four-cylinder engine. The Evoque beat tough competition from the BMW X3 and the Honda CR-V to scoop the award, which was announced at the Detroit motor show today. The judging panel of senior US automotive journalists chose the Evoque as the winner after reviewing it against its competitors in six key categories: value for money, innovation, handling, performance, safety and driver satisfaction. -
All - Cost of cars rising 14 Oct 2011 (Forum)
To me Vauxhall seem to be in a world of its own on prices, with its new Astra prices at the top end being more expensive than lower end Bmw or Audi. Recently I was offered a new 1.7 diesel Exite Astra, retail £19.500 for £13.995, but when I looked in 'What car' depreciation table, after 12 months the value was £9,950, Needless to say I didn't buy it. -
INSURANCE COMPANIES THE REAL LOOTERS OF OUR POCKET 4 Oct 2011 (Forum)
On the 24th of August at 22:00 hours my neighbours van rolled down the hill onto our parking bays and collided with my Jeep pushing it back into my wifes BMW, the police were called as it was alleged that someone had attempted to steal it. They took his vehicle away for forensics however they have not found anything so have closed the case, my wife and I have approached our insurance companies HASTINGS DIRECT and esure to claim from my neighbour who is with SAGA, they are saying that because there is no suspect detained for this they are not to blame and we both have to clame from our own insurance companies. -
any - new car for wife 22 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Vw group cars excluded because of all the issues regarding customer services plus distance to dealer! BMW excluded because rwd and distance to dealer. At the end of the day has left us with Kia, but dealer is not rated highly locally. After looking in showrooms for several weeks, being unable to get test drives when convient for both of us and visited the forums of most of what we have looked at have decided to stick with current car, and abandoned getting a second one. -
Subaru Tribeca or Ford S-Max 2.5T? 30 Mar 2011 (Forum)
As an example, I can buy an April 2007 model with just 16,000 miles for just under £16,000. However I got thinking about alternatives. Without spending fortunes on BMW X5s or Audi Q7s, I had a quick look on Autotrader and came up with some very well specified Ford S-Maxs with the Volvo T5 engine. The only downside is a manual gearbox, but the upside is more space than a Tribeca, economy no worse than my Outback, presumably great performance and some are dripping in features. -
e38 7 Series E38 - Power to drivers door 26 Jan 2011 (Forum)
I have an 728 BMW e38 on a 'R' reg. When I try to unlock on the key fob all of the doors open except the drivers door, it can't be unlocked on the centre console button either. I can unlock it with the key but only before unlocking the other doors on the fob. -
Are all German car seats hard? 20 Aug 2010 (Forum)
They still had plenty of lumbar support so no back problems. I have also seen on other forums complaints about BMW seats being hard. So are all German car seats hard and if so why? -
family coupe convertible 12 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Something like this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201022360156834/ Though perhaps 60,000 miles is a bit on the high side - wondering about all those 'up and down's on the convertible mechanism. Otherwise there are: 3-series (not keen on BMW image) VW EOS Lexus IS (still too new to be cheap, so not really an option) Chrysler Sebring Ford Focus and a few French cars, which I won't consider. I suspect the 3-series is probably best, followed by the EOS and then C70. -
Toyota Camry (1991 - 1995) - Would you buy one/have you? 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Even HJ doesnt seem to have much bad to say about them. It seems impossibly well regarded - I know a guy who ran a V6 for 200k and he said despite BMWs, Mercs and the like which came later, it was his Camry that he missed the most. So, is it crazy to buy one, putting aside the condition of an individual car ( I wouldnt look at anything that didnt have a file of receipts and was well looked after )? -
The 155mph electronic limiter. 23 Dec 2009 (Forum)
My understanding is that there is some kind of gentlemans agreement between the big German car firms to electronically limit their most powerful models in order to have half a chance of maintaining de-restricted autobahns. Can anyone verify this? Interestingly, in recent years, more and more cars from Merc, BMW and Audi's ranges have been qualifying for this restricion. It is remarkable that some mid-range diesels are now capable of these speeds with plenty of low-down poke too, it does beg the question - why do people bother with the vastly more expensive top-end performance models anymore? -
MOT "failure" 18 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I've entered BMW in the make field, but in truth it could be any model of car. On Friday I took my car in to my usual MOT garage around the corner from work, only to receive a phone call at the end of the day saying that it had failed due to excessive wear on the front tyres. -
FIAT Coupe (1995 - 2000) - Sensible or stupid???? 11 May 2009 (Forum)
Can't think of any other car which is cheapish and which is actually fun to drive. Not that keen on fwd, would prefer rwd but cheap rwd fun isn't cheap! Wouldn't have a bmw and nissan 200sxs are too expensive. If anyone else can think of something fun under a grand that won't cost the earth to look after then feel free! Looked at 2cvs but they're too pricey. Generally not keen on french cars. -

Turn those fog lights off! 22 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Finally I really really hate people that don't indicate at roundabouts, it causes me problems as both a driver and pedistrian. I realise on BMW you have to active the indicators via the I drive system which involves downloading the latest security pack from Munich and then having to activate it, but you could always use arm signals! -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Time for a change - but how to get a good deal? 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)
As an aside, I often wonder how magazines and guides calculate residual values especially on stuff like Mercedes and BMW - I have never known anyone pay list for these cars - but it that taken into account in the retained value I wonder? -
Stylish medium estate emitting under 175 g/km 10 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have tried to put them off Audi which is sure to be boring to their specification, although they could probably afford the RS4 or RS6 I might fancy in their position. Skoda and Volvo seem too unglamorous, although that might not be an insuperable problem. BMW might be seen as too flash in some chattering-classes way I don't fully understand. I hoped someone here might have a bright idea or two. -
Audi A4 B8 (2008 - ) - Multitronic reliability 25 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I wonder if the 2.7 Multitronic (I?m strictly a two pedal guy) might be the compromise for me ? between the skate-like BMW and the four poster Merc. However, I?ve read nasty reports about the longevity of the Multitronic auto box. I know Audi claim to have beefed it up recently (not before time) and it?s too early to tell if that has improved the reliability. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 1994 1.8 auto: idling too fast 21 May 2008 (Forum)
Although a perfectly sensible driver well used to London, he surprised me by asking what the rev counter was. I seem to remember his BMW 520 auto had one too. Is it possible that this high and variable idle is caused by mechanical stickiness in the main inlet butterfly rather than some engine management glitch? If so, might it be amenable to a bit of oil and rattling the butterfly back and forth a few times? -
Dilema of options for buying a new/newish car 17 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Background: My self employed wife is looking to get a new or newish car to replace her current car. We had a look around a few likely contenders and she is very keen on the BMW 1 series. She does about 8,000 business miles and 4,000 private miles a year. At the moment she claims 40p per mile back from her own business for this. Now, this is the question. What would be the best, most economical solution for us to get her a new or newish vehicle? -
Ford Focus saloon (2005 - ) - saloon cars - whats the point..... 8 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Myself and others have tried to persuade him to buy a hatchback or estate but he is very much set in his ways, bless him! I can appreciate that some of the larger british, german or japanese saloons (Bentley, Merc, BMW, Audi, Lexus etc..) are very nice places to be and have huge boots but what is the point of a Focus size saloon? Other things come into play like does a medium size saloon depreciate more? On the other hand, if less saloon cars are sold does this make them more sought after by people who still buy them?
