Was now starting to look at newish cars (still under warranty) for local up to 50 mile daily commute plus occasional long distance dash. trying to work out how to get best crash protection in case of impact at motorway speeds and reasonable performance/economy. maximun size ceed/focus class. have already excluded new astra because of driving position for me. also, She won't have anything italian spanish or french, likes Toyota, but expensive and 30 miles to a dealer for servicing. Mazdas seem to be slightly better copies of equivalent fords, but expensive too. Astra fails because at 6'2" there is NO Room for even a child behind me! most of the time will be 2 of us but occasionally 4. Vw group cars excluded because of all the issues regarding customer services plus distance to dealer! BMW excluded because rwd and distance to dealer. At the end of the day has left us with Kia, but dealer is not rated highly locally. After looking in showrooms for several weeks, being unable to get test drives when convient for both of us and visited the forums of most of what we have looked at have decided to stick with current car, and abandoned getting a second one.

At motorway speeds you are lucky to survive any crash, regardless of what you are driving.

What is your budget? There are plenty of the previous model Focus littering forecourts at the moment - pre reg avaialble for very little money - a colleague picked up a brand new 1.6TDCi Zetec for £11k.

Bigger seems to be safer, budget up to about 12000 quid, forgot to say had considered cruze hatch as it has the same engine as my epica vcdi, but we have now decided after all the messing around in dealerships to manage with one car only. Chevrolet dealer also 30 miles away..

incidentally qualified for my bus pass last week, so will manage in that way, and use current car less, after all, was dirt cheap to buy, and not costing much to run. the idea was to have a second car for her ladyship, but we got fed up with the hassle of trying cars and it is virtually impossible to get a 24 hour test drive in the engine spec we wanted. thanks davey, but giving up on the idea!

Get a Nissan Juke....

Lot of car for the money, slightly higher driving position is ideal for the little lady, and much easier to get in and out of for those with plastic hips and dodgy backs..

Get a Nissan Juke....

If you can live with people staring and laughing at you, they are ideal

Deffo a Marmite car, but you'll never lose it in a car park !

I've got a Petrol turbo and a Diesel version, I could never bring myself to buy a boring eco-box Focus/Golf/Astra etc...

Jukes look like a melted Matchbox toy.

OldRoverBoy - your post heading did make me laugh; it is harsh to trade your missus in for a car though ;-)

Sadly not part of the deal. she is small, perfectly formed, very beautiful and pure dynamite when angry. I hasten to add that she really is she who must be obeyed, (she is a dab hand with a surgical scalpel and is never so happy as when she is up to her elbows in gore), although it hasn't been mine so far. And there isn't a car in the world that i would px her for. Now she's told me she wants a....... Toyota avensis.. Aaargh...

Why not get the Honda jazz? Practical boot space, holds it's value well, decent rear leg room for it's class. But I'm abit doubt about it fuel performance compare to the diesels, is still 50+mpg but a diesels probably get 60+ in a long run

If she likes the Avensis, what about an Auris, if you wanted a smaller hatchback?
