  • Skoda celebrates 20 years of vRS 16 Aug 2021 (News)
While the Octavia was the first Skoda to wear a vRS badge, the Mk1 Fabia vRS, which went on sale in 2003, was the first hot hatch to get a diesel engine... Oh, how times change. Fitting a 130PS diesel engine to 1300kg Fabia made the baby Skoda predictably nippy but it was the car's 310Nm of torque (more than a Porsche Boxster at the time) that defined how it drove.
  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 9-5-2015 9 May 2015 (News)
What kind of fuel am I? I'm on the point of arranging to get a VW Golf SV on Motability, so I'll only have it for 3 years, but find it difficult to decide whether to go for the 1.4 TSI 125 petrol engine or the 1.6 Diesel. I've read one report that suggests the diesel on the SV is not much more economical than the petrol, but others suggest the diesel is far more economical. I would be grateful for your advice.

  • New Mazda 3 to Drive 9,300 Miles Hiroshima to Frankfurt 22 Jul 2013 (News)
.  In the UK, there will be a choice of two bodystyles (hatchback and fastback), three SKYACTIV-G petrol engines and one SKYACTIV-D diesel - all offering an unbeatable combination of performance, fuel economy and low emissions that should place the all-new Mazda3 among the best in Europe's C-segment. This will be the third time that Mazda models have taken part in such an extreme test drive.  In 1977, German reporters drove two predecessors of the Mazda3 - Mazda 323 hatchbacks - from Japan to Frankfurt.  The expedition was followed up successfully in 1990, when four Mazda 626s crossed the former Soviet Union.  Now the stage is set for the most advanced Mazda compact ever to follow in their tracks.
  • Audi A2 TDI Prices Announced 10 Apr 2001 (News)

The service identified no issues but it failed its MoT due to a broken suspension cover (general wear and tear, which is acceptable given potholes) and a failed misfuel prevention fuel tank closing mechanism due to a broken spring. We are told it needs a whole new part for £240 and that Renault cannot find the part in UK so it will take 5 working days to obtain. Is a fuel tank not designed to last 10 years / 100k miles?
  • UKIP: 25-year-old cars should be 'tax free' 16 Apr 2015 (News)
The Conservatives have pledged to continue investing in infrastructure (with 1300 miles of new roads promised), and point to the cancellation of the last four proposed fuel duty increases as ways in which they’ve helped car owners. And Labour has also promised to invest in ‘strategic roads’ and to ‘address the neglect on local roads’. UKIP has said it would remove road tolls where possible, and only allow speed cameras to be installed in accident black spots and residential areas.

IB, via email You've made this very complicated. If the Q3 had a 150PS engine then that is the latest manifold-in-head, belt cam EA889 VAG diesel and it should be enough for the Q3. It employs AdBlue SCR technology to achieve EU6. The Mazda CX-5 2.2 150PS is a Skyactive manifold-in-head chain cam diesel engine that achieves EU6 without the need for SCR and AdBlue.

SM, via email Diesels that don't meet EU6 and petrols that don't meet EU4 will soon be banned from London, so if you're thinking 2nd hand, don't think diesel. Also, for 6k - 8k per year the additional cost of fuel for a petrol engine is likely to be far less than the additional cost of repairs and maintenance for a diesel.
