which engine oil ? 13 Apr 2005 (Forum)
which engine oil to use? MGF Handbook states 'any 10W/40' BMW Handbook states PREFERRED 'ACEA:A2-96 or A3-96 or B2-96' etc. Also Permitted 'CCMC-G4 or G5 or G4/PD2' etc. Also states different Viscosities dependant on Ambient Temperatures. Looking at Halfords Oils, the range was from Fully Synthetic, Part Synthetic, Mineral Oil, each with differing viscosity ranges. -

Metallic silver to go, Sir? 14 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Lots of advice that white is about as uncool and undesirable as it gets.Metallic is perceived as a good thing and it is not unusual to see rows of cars in varying shades of metallic silver in any car park. Recently however, I have seen a few new white cars, Mercs, 5-Series BMW and Toyotas that, to my eyes, looked pretty good. Some cars are colour sensitive I know, but the new Mazda 3 (as an example of this) that sat in the showroom in white looked superb. Is it possible that in three year's time dealers will be saying: 'Metallic silver? -
New car delivery times - delays 8 May 2004 (Forum)
I'm a bit puzzled for instance that for a Volvo XC90, local dealer is quoting about 9 months yet Autocar, What Car and Auto Express all have one as a long-term test vehicle, and Volvo are still avertising the XC90 quite heavily. Same sort of position with BMW X5, dealer again quoting about 9 months for delivery but there is extensive advertising....and should the marketing bods responsible for these cars get the chop for getting the production versus sales demand figures so far out? -
Power Steering 20 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Hello Most cars these days have power steering but few have effective PS at manouvering speed. My 4 yr old BMW 318 falls into this category. This wasn\'t an issue when I bought the car but thanks to the progress of my arthritis, it is now. I should mention that I regularly check tyre pressures etc so I\'m confident that this is not the cause. -
HJ's page rationing 29 Feb 2004 (Forum)
OK, a picture works well to break up slabs of text, but today's "extravagant" shot of roads uses five of the seven columns and, overall, consumes as much space as the valuable questions and info - and the shot is hardly needed in such proportion to highlight one question about BMW diesel engines. Also a waste, I suggest, is the first column introducing HJ, which has six inches of empty, white space underneath. Page design requirements apart, use of smaller pictures would surely suffice and allow much more text to be used. -
Tiptronic autoboxes 24 Jan 2004 (Forum)
But to me it doesn't feel right. I'm with HJ: pull back to change up - and I did make the odd mistake when I test drove a BMW 3 with tiptronic. But are most manufacturers getting it wrong? If so, how can they have made the mistake? Why are they still making it? What's the Backroom view? Are HJ and I in the minority? -
Burning oil 6 Oct 2003 (Forum)
At what level is oil consumption considered excessive in a fairly new vehicle ??? I raise this question as my sons BMW 330Ci, with only 20k miles from new, is burning a litre of oil every 2k miles, which quite frankly, I consider is totally unacceptable. If you compare this to his previous car, Audi A4 2.8 quattro, which only managed 1 litre per 1k miles, it is an improvement, but when I compare this with my brother-in-laws Mazda 323, that has covered 167k miles and still does not burn a drop of oil between 6k mile changes. -
Rover 75 - diesel engine problem 19 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I own a 2001 Rover 75 2.0 CDT auto. This car uses the BMW 2.0 litre diesel engine. In June this year the engine began running rough on idle and cutting out. The problem became worse and eventually it was diagnosed as a faulty pressure sensor in the high pressure fuel rail. -

To all Omega 2.5 TD owners 16 Mar 2003 (Forum)
What's the lowest price for a N/P/R/S-reg Omega CDX with the 2.5 BMW TurboDiesel at the moment? (I am willing to travel over the country to find a right car, my QX was 160 miles away. I am willing to buy from any source) Also, is manual or auto better with that engine? -
Car Wars 14 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I am interested in opinions on the accident on Car Wars lat night, where the police car travelling at 127mph trying to catch up a speeding BMW collided with a truck which pulled out into lane 3 of a motorway. Did anyone else watch in disbelief as the plod kept speeding along as the truck pulled across in front of him? I thought the result was totally predictable and I was shocked that a Class1(? -
Diesel Beamer Judder 25 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I think it is fuel related, could it be air in the common rail or foaming or the injectors or loss of pressure in the rail? I also wonder if the air sensors are playing up. Surprise surprise my BMW garage cannot find the fault! Any ideas? Stan -
Making a shortlist of compact autos 23 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I haven't got a garage so a ragtop convertable is out. My best guesses are Mercedes C Class Sports Coupe. BMW 316i compact SE. So these are the ones I plan to test drive. The Audi A3 is another option, but is this about to be replaced? -
Volvo V40 Estate - any good? 25 Jan 2003 (Forum)
A friend has been offered the car by a trader I know who punts on ex-company cars at a reasonable price (I bought a 318i Touring from him, and he seems a genuine bloke) Reg March 2000 (W plate) SE Estate, 2litre turbo Metallic black Black leather good spec 117,000 miles, full Volvo sh Price £6250 Mate wants a another BMW Touring to repalce his F reg 325i, and is a bit iffy about the Volvo. It seems to me like a lot of car for the money. Does anyone have any opinions on the car/value? I've read the CBCB section and it's a bit mixed. -
Alarm Bother 20 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Being a "gadget barge", it has a feature to allow you to disable the sensor (if you wish to cook your Labrador on board whilst you nip into Tesco, but not alert anyone). This worked and stopped the retrigger. I recall having the same trouble on a company BMW. It usually happened after a long run on a cold day, and was something to do with the air in the cabin contracting as it cooled and setting the thing off. Or stuff creaking as it contracted. On the other hand, the sensor may simply be "k*******d" Any thoughts. -

hydrogen and hybrids 26 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Yesterday it was reported that the UK government has decided to back fossil car fuel for the medium term (50 years) and to endorse the hybrid petrol/electric approach as the quickest way to get CO2 emissions reduced. Thus no steps to support development of a hydrogen delivery system and infrastructure. BMW have indicated their disappointment at this and GM can't be pleased after their work. More importantly, UK motorists should be disappointed as well. If we're going to be milked again for new technology we might as well get the best and we might as well be in step with the US and Europe - the UK decision seems to preempt any policy decision by Europe. -

Standardised European Pre-tax Car Prices 21 Jan 2002 (Forum)
BMW has announced that, starting with the 7-series, a single pre-tax list price in Euros will be used in those countries within the Eurozone. Other models will follow later. Adjustments will be made if national specifications vary.
