Recall or not? 5 Mar 2002 (Forum)
On the car by car breakdown HJ posted the following for my car 23/2/2002: recall in Germany for all models fitted with Conti Eco Contact and Sport Contact 205/55 R16 and 225/55 R16 tyres due to a pressure problem I contacted my dealer as my car is shod in these. -
Audi A4 B6 - Breakdown costs over £2k AA Warranty not accepting 27 Jul 2011 (Forum)
It’s been just over a year i bought an Audi A4 The car suddenly cut the engine, it started again drove it and it cut again, I called... -
Overloading 3 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Q - how do you determine when the car's overloaded - it's not easy to weigh a car. Also in the event of an accident or breakdown, would an insurance company refuse to pay out if they suspected a car was loaded over the limit? -
Ford Kuga powershift problem - Faulty repair 20 Sep 2021 (Forum)
A neighbour had the car repaired at a specialist a few weeks ago, £700 less than a ford dealer quote, and as i drove to bring her home, I said get shut of after. They were given a 1 year warranty. It failed last week and was taken away on a breakdown truck. -
Which recovery organisation 7 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Last year I negotiated it down but am somewhat fed up of this (e.g. personal cover quoted instead of car cover) The AA give a much better price. However, Green Flag are even better. Not sure of Green Flag merits, e.g fleet and mechanics ( as averages etc I know it depends on individuals) I would welcome hearing the collective wisdom on the quality and service provided by breakdown organisations. -
Would you change flat tyre yourself on motorway? 22 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Have never experienced this on a motoraway, or any trip, and wondered what people would recommend. I can imagine it's a terrifyig experience jacking up a car next to three lanes of passing traffic. Would you call your breakdown service or try it yourself? -
X Type Vs Volvo S60 19 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Probably looking to buy a used (6-18 month) version of a Jag X type 2.5 or 3.0 SE or Volvo S60 2.0 or 2.4 T. Auto preferred, petrol not diesel. I have done a bit of research and looked at HJ's car breakdown, however, would any experienced back roomers have any personal opinions on which to go for? I'd be grateful to hear your comments - as critical as you like. Thanks. -
Passat and Indicators 10 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Wondering whether the hazard light would work, again initial few attempts at pressing it yielded nothing at all, so Im now left with an car with no functioning indicators. All the other lights and electrics work. Does anyone have any ideas on a quick remedy and what to do. Can I call the RAC breakdown for this reason?? Any ideas thanks in advance. -
Is the extended warranty worth it? 10 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I rang my Mitsubishi dealer today and they quoted me £636 to extend the manufacturers warranty for 12 months (this includes breakdown cover). Do you think this is worth it? I am thinking of selling the car within the next 9 months or so - would having a manufaturers warranty make a big difference to the money I might get for it (I estimate it is worth around £5500)? -
Subaru Legacy - Owner Experience 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Just read HJ CBC Breakdown on this model and, in theory, seems quite a good bet as a used 3 year old buy. The 4WD and low range would be useful for occasional towing plus estate car practicality. Do any of the BR community own one, or know of one, and if so what has their experience been. -
Paris. SUV car parking charges - Coming here soon? From The Guardian 12 Jul 2023 (Forum)
As well as just checking stuff foe a mate going to Versailles, Paris and Disneyland, telling him to get the Crit'Air certificate for his 2008 petrol Zafira... EU breakdown insurance is costing him a fortune, but cheaper than changing the car... -
Honda FR-V 3+3 MPV (2004 - 2009) - FR-V auto - torque converter or I-Shift 5 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Can anyone confirm the type of gearbox in the FR-V automatic, HJ's car by car breakdown says torque converter and its O.K, the Parkers review says it's an automated manual and avoid. Are there any owners here to recommend or warn me off? This car seems to suit an automatic because of the seating layout and the tricky handbrake although I've only driven a manual so far. -
Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - Swap from 2006 Focus 26 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Local Vauxhall Dealers has 2008 57 plate Vauxhall 1.9 CDTi 120 SRI for sale at £7995. Current car is a Focus 2 1.8TDCI Sport. Focus is a bit cramped in the boot when we go away and rear legroom is not great for our kids in a car seats... Would people change or am I wasting £2k? Focus needs Breakdown cover, tyres and wipers soon. -
Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 99 1.4 Electronic Intermitant Failure 15 Jun 2008 (Forum)
After 2 breakdowns in as many weeks requiring the AA service, my car has been diagnosed with failure of the ECU. I have been informed that will cost at least £500 and I believe my car is now only worth about £1000. -
SEAT Leon TDI 10 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Is this the norm or is it the sign of some defect? The service history indicated brake pad replacement some 8000 miles ago. The car felt good in other respects. The service record indicates that the first service was done at 19,000 miles. Is this acceptable? HJ's Car-by-Car Breakdown talks of the eventual failure of the ECU on TDI 110 models. -
Megane? Opinions please 8 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Now if it is as described, this is well under 'book' price. It's just the right size but HJ's car by car breakdown has scared me a bit. Could current owners give me their opinions, good and bad. Much appreciated. MLC -
Vauxhall Monaro V8 9 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I see from my local paper\'s Motoring Section (Oxford Times 24th October 2003) that Vauxhall have officially announced the launch of a rebadged version of the Aussie Holden Monaro...a V8 coupe version of the Holden Commodore. The Australian original was launched at a motorshow in 1999 or thereabouts as a concept car and won such accolades that it was in production in 2001 for the Australian market. Details: V8 5.7l engine, RWD, 3 doors. Makes the Omega look rather stuffy! Ian L. HJ points out that the Monaro coupe, the station wagon and the doublecab ute are all in car by car breakdown on this site. -
Value these two cars please? 27 May 2003 (Forum)

Saab 900 1996 18 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Hello, I am considering buying a circa 1996 Saab 900 for my wife, she wants something a bit stronger than her Clio, due to the menace of 4x4 driving mums round here. but something different with a bit of style. Anyhow, What is the longeivity of these cars like ? for example if I find a good, well maintained example, but with a lot of miles - like 120 000 would it be a reasonable bet so long as the price is not more than £ 2 - 2500 ? I would be interested in your experiences, I have read the car by car breakdown. -

So a neighbours dad bought a 2014 kuga diesel auto a couple of years back for her, not serviced since, as far as I am aware, no gearbox service either...
