  • Do you carry your V5 with you? 5 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I don't suppose you do. So what when you're away from home and your car is towed - and you have to produce driving licence, V5 and proof of address. Westminster (see previous thread) didn't seem to care too much when they towed my friend's car; despite giving a long list of required documents - but she had her driving licence with her.
  • Redline and into D - what happens next? 14 May 2007 (Forum)
It's Friday and my boredom at work has got me thinking. I'm just curious, what would happen if I was to redline my supra (autobox) and then put it into drive? I can think of three possible outcomes: 1 - Something breaks in the gearbox, although I'm not sure what, gears or clutches? Would the torque converter fail? 2 - Failure in the drive train, either the diff or UVs 3 - Two smoking tyres!

  • Road tax and MOT ? 30 Jan 2007 (Forum)

  • Xantia Auto Gearbox Problem 6 Dec 2006 (Forum)
It starts fine, suspension lifts to normal height fine BUT it always sticks in 1st gear for too long (in Drive) and will eventually drop into 2nd, then straight into 3rd as the revs have hit about 5000 and it sounds like the exhaust is gonna fall off! A Citroen dealer advised that the gearbox needs to be warmed up sufficiently before driving off, but even after wasting 10 mins sitting still, it still happens every day.
  • Quickest/most cost effective route ? 4 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I am thinking of spending a week in Centre Parcs in Westerhoven near Eindhoven in the Netherlands and was wondering where would be the best place to cross the channel ? Calais and drive across, or cross the channel to a point closer to the Netherlands ? It's less than 3hr from Calais so not sure how much a longer ferry crossing would take against the 3 hr drive ? Anyone ever done this sort of journey before, what's the most time effetive and cost effective route ?

  • 1993 Fiesta1.1 engine revving at idle? 14 Jun 2006 (Forum)
We have just bought a CFI fiesta 1.1 1993 with a genuine 21800 miles from new.It drives as new but has an intermittent fault. The car occasionally 'drives itself', lifting your foot off the throttle doesnt slow the car, and if you dip the clutch the engine is racing. Sometimes when you stop at a junction it will be racing, sometimes the revs surge violently up and down before settling.
  • £6 billion road improvements? 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Anyway, even if they do widen the motorways, how many lanes would actually get used then? When I was taught to drive (1971), the idea was that one drives on the left, and only uses the other lanes for overtaking.
  • Vaux Combo (new) steering rack failed. 11 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My mate drives an 03 Vauxhall Combo van for work (15,000 miles on it) He was complaining of a clonk from the suspension, and it got so bad he called out the AA who diagnosed the steering rack had failed and that "it wasnt safe to drive any distance in".
  • Only took 3 days 3 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Only 3 days into 2006 & seen my 1st 2 candidates for muppet of the year. Driving my truck on the M6 this morning (4am) at the M6/A442/M6 toll junction I noticed a fellow in a Rover 25 reverse from the chevrons back across the slip road onto the hard shoulder. No2 muppet was the guy only 2 mins later driving from the unlit to lit section in the same area with no lights on with all n sundry flashing him but he carried on regardless.

  • Mk5 Fiesta - Noisy thrust race / gearbox 6 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I know a noisy thrust race is common on Fiestas and his car has this quite bad but a similar noise can be heard whilst driving through the gears, is it the thrust or worse?. If the gear lever is moved back or forward whilst driving in gear the noise gets even worse - it's like a high pitched buzz. Any ideas or knowledge out there. thanks, nivek9876
  • Ideas for first car? 1 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Am about to start learning to drive and realise that it would probably be a good idea to get a car seeing as my parents only own automatics. What is a good car to get for around 2 - 3k? Wouldn't want it to be particularly old because I will probably drive to school (30 miles there and back) and around quite a lot so I want something reliable and solid.
  • Cat damage 29 Oct 2005 (Forum)
The car began running badly and was driven gently back to base - approx 1 mile. At which point it was revved very hard by a '3rd party'to try to drive it onto a ramp. Black smoke ensued at that point. The problem turned out to be HT leads, causing poor ignition. Is it likely that the cat damage occued as a result of the drive home or the high revving - which would have put far more unburnt fuel into the exaust and cat??

  • Trailer breaks free!! 27 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Today a funny thing happened. Whilst reversing Land Rover and trailer into the drive, the trailer detached itself and parked itself in the drive! No damage or injury fortunately but I want to get to the bottom of this. I thought that with these modern ball hitch arrangement this couldn't happen.
