  • PDA and Sat Nav combinations 15 Jan 2006 (Forum)
My preference is for the XDA as it will take a SIM card and can also be used as a phone and also has a camera, a pretty useless accessory to my mind but you never know - could be useful in the event of a shunt. The pda would be used on a sucker type windscreen mount, probably a powered one with a speaker.
  • Touareg - a misnomer if ever there was 8 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Lots of head-scratching from the clever-clogs against the background of shared nods of wisdom from the true Touaregs, the Blue Men, neatly portrayed by clever camera work from Star. Bit like all those soccer weenies who crawl around in agony every time they get a slight knock on their little finger in case it prejudices their commission from those highly lucrative after-shave commercials for males of dubious personal orientation.
  • Badly signed temporary speed limit 18 Dec 2004 (Forum)
They've added pre-warning and some slightly better signing, but there are still several unobscured 50mph repeaters in the 30 zone and, in fact, one right next to the first 30 sign. There are cameras on this road, but no in the new 30 zone, so that's not my concern. What bothers me is that the signing is a mess, no one knows what to do there, you have traffic joining from the left at 50 when you're (supposed to be doing) 30, and they don't seem to really care.
  • I Have A Question Volume 57 5 Nov 2004 (Forum)
In fact, in this thread it should not be. No Questions About PC's. They now go in another Thread. No politics No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming No arguments or slanging matches Nothing which I think is not following the spirit of the thread Nothing that risks the future of this site (please see the small print for details www.honestjohn.co.uk/credits/index.htm ) Any of the above will be deleted.
  • Congestion Charging v Road Tax 22 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I see on the news that some body called the Institute of Public Policy Reserch has come up with a proposal That VED be abolished and replaced with blanket congestion charging, with drivers being charged for every mile they drive. This would mean that every road in the country would have vehicle recognition cameras, and charges would be weighted against those using busier areas, with high milage business drivers in London paying as much as £141 per month, and those in rural areas (such as myself) getting away with cheaper running costs.
  • Undisguised new Volvo S40 pictures 4 Sep 2003 (Forum)
http://www.8ung.at/werner-beinhart/ (Can be slowish, even with ADSL) My opinions? Well, yes, it is predictable an S60 shrunk in the wash, and the front looks a bit dumpy (may be camera angle, but should look great as a T5 on steroids), but the back is fabulous. Very cohesive use of shape from the rear quarter light back. The instrument shroud is too Lexus 200, and the centre console is fine apart from that horrid metal-look panel.
  • Help! I'm turning into my Dad!!! 16 Mar 2003 (Forum)
HOWEVER - I find now that if I've been on a long motorway journey, I arrive fresh and alert because I've not been looking for Pc Plod all the time in my rear view mirror. I come home from work persecution-complex free as I *know* that I've not triggered any speed cameras. And I can drive everywhere knowing that if our local constabulary do pull me, then it's for a damned good reason. Actually, this getting older and driving sensibly malarkey is quite good, isn't it?
  • Traffic Census 8 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Can I tell them to stop wasting my time and be on my miserable way? Surely with all the Big Brother cameras bolted to every bridge and sign post is it beyond the wit of the transport planners to pick cars at random and follow them on their TV screens?
  • POINTS PANIC!! 5 Sep 2002 (Forum)
The car was facing the oncoming traffic and was under the full sun, so was barely recognisable as a police car. There were no signs warning of Police Speed Checks. There were a number of camera warning signs and I'm sure the car was parked far along the road from one. Quite obviously a case of the supremely intelligent North Wales Police raking in fixed penalty money. This opinion is caused by the shocked, then angry face of the Mum they pulled after me, and the fixed penalty I got near Barmouth, N Wales for doing 51 on a straight downhill stretch.
  • Flat Battery - Help 19 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Gentlemen - your attention please. Clear your minds of Speed Cameras, Limits,VW's and other inconsequental things and address your minds to my problem. I have, which apart from an excellent driving position and ease of entry for an 18 stone, 6ft 2" person with athritic left knee, what must be one of Britains poorest made vehicles - a 1986 Landrover Discovery.
