  Both 2003/53 reg, the 12k mile E320 petrol bid to £25,750 and the 25k mile E320CDI to £27,500, both provisional. The same 320CDI engine, but in a 27k mile 02 reg S Class sold for £26,400, while an early 74k mile 99V W220 S320 petrol sold for a mere £16,750. A 16k mile 2004/53 Mercedes CLK320 Avantgarde convertible was the first I’ve seen at auction.

  Other cheap nearly new cars today included a 9k mile 03 reg Audi A4 TDI V6 163bhp Sport Avant, sold for £19,650; a nice 11k mile met grey manual 2003/53 Jag S-Type 2.5 V6 Sport, sold for £16,900; and a 3,600 mile 2004/53 facelift Honda Civic 1.4E 5-door bid to a provisional £7,400. Interestingly the base model E has a CD radio, but comes without the console fitted to higher spec Civics since March 2003.

  The biggest difference recorded was from a Jaguar retailer who quoted £1,014 for a one-year extension on an S-Type V6 SE Auto compared to just £320.23 from Warranty Direct. Motorists seeking additional cover may also have to pay for an inspection before the franchised dealer agrees to sell a warranty.

  Two consecutively registered ex Cheshire 99V T5 manuals, each with 153k miles made £4,800 and £5,050; two ex Hants T5 automatics made £3,000 for the 160k mile 99S and £5,050 for the 137k mile 99T; and three ex Thames Valley and Bedfordshire MV6’s made £3,900 for the 2000W 96k miler; £3,825 for the new 2000W 88k miler; and a provisional £4,600 for the 2001Y 97k miler. 4x4s came in fours. A pair of 98R Range Rover 4.0V8s made £6,400 for the 162k miler and £6,450 for the 178k miler (the same buyer bought both); a 95k mile 99T Freelander DI 5-door (which had been a disaster on the fleet) sold for £5,625; and a massive 39k 99T Nissan Patrol 2.8 GRTD 5-door in non-white black made a monster £11,200.

  A well known honest trader had to fight like mad to secure another C Class, this one the much wanted C250TD auto with 72,000 miles on an early S plate, and had to pay £9,900 to secure it. He also had to pay £7,700 for a metallic blue 13,000 mile 2000X Peugeot 206 1.4GLX 5-door with aircon. A fair selection of faults (see car by car breakdown) hasn't stopped these pretty little cars being much wanted by younger women.

  This 17,000 mile eight month old Y reg car started at £19,000 and bid to £20,200 which was deemed not enough even though the new price is only £22,960. A pair of 3.0 V6 S-Type Jags bid to £18,600 for the 2000W automatic with 33,000 miles and £15,300 for the 2000W manual with 22,000 miles and a very badly repainted front nearside wing and valence. It would have been worth the vendor's while to spend money on a proper repair instead of a bodge.

  But prestige kit may have fallen back a bit. A 49,000 mile 99T BMW E46 323iSE bid to £15,250 and a 44,000 mile 99T Jaguar S Type 3.0V6 SE auto with leather and woodrim steering wheel ran out of bids at £18,000. It also seemed that the auction attendance was down with plenty of room left in the carpark, so these two will live to bid higher on another day.
