Renault Clio 1.4 Engine hesitation prob 6 Oct 2006 (Forum)
It is a bit worrying when trying to pull out at junctions etc, as if you are not quick with the cluch & accel then the car stalls, It has got to the point where she wont drive it any more, so we have had to swap cars. So far I have replaced the following: Plugs, Leads, Dizzy cap & rotor. -all where past their best. Coolant Temp sensor. I have also checked the resistance on the Idle stepper motor(bottom 2 pins), and it seems to be within specs, 1-2 ohms when the throttle is closed and open circuit when the throttle is open. -
Mercedes 190E Misfire 18 Apr 2006 (Forum)
(even when in a period of misfire, I can rev it to 6000RPM in neutral without problem, but as soon as it's back under load, it misfires again - it's the loading causing the problem) The garages have replaced the distributor cap and rotor arm, leads and plugs over the period, all to no avail. The car will run perfectly for 2000 or 3000 miles, then suddenly develop the misfire, especially pulling away from a junction. It lasts any where from 100yd to 30 miles, then disappears and runs fine again, until the next time. -

Rover 416 1997 coolant question 30 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I have also noticed that there is no hot air coming out of the heater even thought the water pipe leading to the heater is hot I have moved the dial from hot to cold to hot again but it has no effect. If I drive the car hot air will come out of the heater after a while but it is not very hot and it will go cold after a while once you stop moving. should I replace the thermostat even though I sure its working as the top rad hose becomes hot before the bottom rad hose. -
Bora 2.ol running probs/low mpg 22 Jun 2005 (Forum)
He cleared the faults and the car ran a treat once more, mpg back to normal and no smell of fuel. 200 miles later and the mixture is cocked again and mpg through the floor. Changed air filter and spark plugs today, have fuel filter and H.T. leads to change tomorrow, the car hasn't been back on the diagnostic yet. Any help would be most appreciated. Paul -

Tarmac v Monobloc 31 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I live in bog standard semi detached with driveway up the side of the house, mono bloc at back leading to garage. Up to the monobloc, my driveway was once stones, but is now compacted stones into ground, leaving it very muddy. Looking to get the driveway done and looking at either mono bloc or tarmac. -
Saab 9-5 susp noise, oil light & judder 18 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I guess this just means top the oil up. 3) Can feel juddery vibration when driving above 70, below this drive is very smooth. My limited knowledge leads me to guess it is just wheel balancing. Again, is this a symptom of something more sinister and what other basic check should I do? Help on any or all these much appreciated. -
fiat punto ECU light and coil packs 11 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I replaced the coil pack on Friday but on the motorway again this morning the ECU light started flashing at me again, there are no other symptoms no loss of power etc. Has anyone got any ideas as to what could be wrong? If there was a problem with an HT lead or spark plug would my ECU light be flashing? I want to explore all posibiliteis before I go back to the garage and get charged £25 for him o tell me it's the same thing. Have had an expensive month and cant afford endless amounts of diagnostic checks. -
Volvo 850 again... 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
(Volvo 850 GLT M reg, 2.0 20 valve, auto saloon) There are two diagnostic units adjacent to the washer resovoir. On unit A (with the fly lead) instead of an led and rubber button I have some soldering, a mounted led (looks functional) and two small circular contacts that would have been beneath the original rubber button (obviously the mounting cap that held the original button has been knocked off/damaged. -
02 Seat Leon Cupra 8 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I am wondering whether they are the original set and worn out, as the car runs ok except for the slightly lumpy idle when cold. It is just like i have experienced on other cars with worn out plugs or leads. Before i purchase a set of NGK plugs which will cost me £30 all in, i wish to inspect those in the car. However there is a plastic cover over the engine impeeding my path- how do i remove this? -
n reg fiesta diesel starting nightmare 15 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Next day-would not start. Engine turning ok but no smoke from exhaust etc. Eventually started with help of jump leads (but there was no combustion noise for ages) After work took it to garage who renewed all glow plugs. Next morning would not start at all. AA came out. Said battery was okay but no current(?)at plugs.Found a glow plug touching a bracket( had happened at garage) which he said was earthing it and preventing enough electric getting to plugS(?). -
Q Car 2 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Three cars, all with drivers behaving themselves, gently running up to a roundabout on an NSL A road. Nice, shiny, 03 reg BMW Coupe 330i, leading a filthy dirty, knocked and banged about, brake-dust-blackened alloys, apparently povert spec, SAAB 9000 on a G plate, and then me. The other side of the roundabout, the road opens up in to what is effectively a runway. -
Bang! 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Anyway, the bonnet is hopelessly crumpled, plastic scuttle panel badly gouged, windscreen broken and the roof is dented where the leading edge of the bonnet hit the roof mount for the aerial. And I guess the bonnet latch needs replacing as well.... At 8 years and 95,000 miles, it could well be 'game over' for this little car. It is still insured in the name of my mother, who died two weeks ago - my sister rang the insurance company, explained the circumstances and got them to issue a cover note valid until the 23rd, with myself as named driver. -
Mondeo Noises 24 Feb 2003 (Forum)
It has done this since 26,000 miles when I bought it (now done 72,000.) I have replaced plugs and leads, cleaned the MAF sensor, checked all electrical connections and breather hoses. The car has full Ford history and all service parts have been changed, as they should. I had the car plugged into the Ford computer, which showed no fault codes and no available updates on the ECU software. -
Flushing oil and long journey 29 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I had thought that a good idea would be to put a flushing oil in the engine before I brought it down to Huddersfield (125 miles) and then do a full oil and filter change as part of a major service, which would consist of:- all filters points condenser plug leads battery etc. My main question is, what oil should I use? Can I use the STP treatment and still expect the oil to lubricate the engine for 120 odd miles? Or should I have an oil change done at one of the quick fit places and then change again when I get home? -
Electrolysis corrosion 7 Aug 2002 (Forum)
My scanner is on the blink so cannot reproduce the whole A4 sheet which details the simple test procedure for checking the coolant for an electrical charge but basically with a voltmeter on the range 0 -12v. with sensitivity of at least one-tenth of a volt with one test lead to battery ground and the other in the coolant (not touching any metal or the filler neck) Any voltage reading will indicate the presence of current through the coolant. A reading below 0.05volts is acceptable. -
My lousy Xantia 12 Jun 2002 (Forum)
All the warning lights come on but starter motor is dead. Youngest son arrives says battery done for. Hell it`s only 7 and a half years old !! Stuck jump leads on and off she went. Ran around a bit to charge battery. Problem is the red light that flashes when the alarm is armed now glows continuously with the ignition on or off but at least the screaming has stopped. -
POLO WARNING and more advice sought! 6 Mar 2002 (Forum)
1) DO NOT BUY AN OLD VW POLO WITH THE INTENTION OF HAVING A CHEAP CAR - the following is a list of breakages in 9 months, probably not exhaustive: -Radiator -Clutch -2 clutch cables -Brake pads, discs, cylinders -Tracking, very temperamental -Suspension components -Wheel bearings -Oil consumption and leaks EXCESSIVE DESPITE 140+ K -Exhaust: full system (blowing already after a month) -Fan belt -Ignition leads (POOR SERVICING by previous round-the-corner-use owner) -Latest: throttle cable spring, part-and-parcel of the carb - may need to replace carb if cheaper - was very scary as I was overtaking somebody and the revs shot well past maximum for about 10 secs before I could 'safely' turn off the engine to avoid seizure, then had to coast to a layby. -
Seasonal Lunacy Philippine Style 30 Dec 2001 (Forum)
First we had fake garbage collectors, uniforms, ID's and all, who politely appeared expecting their annual tips. THese were followed next day by the real ones who carried lead pipes, knives and other weapons in their search for the impostors, naturally teed off at having been cheated of their seasonal tips. Then we had fake Salvation Army people waving tins outside the malls.
