Given what happened to that little boy and the rest of those unfortunate souls killed on 'smart motorways', we may as well give loved ones the best chance in surviving/reducing serious injuries if you are unlucky enough to be involved in an accident.

One of the problem might be cost because you may require up to 4 different size seats as the child grows up, and then there is the 10 year old dictating " I am not sitting in that " attitude allowed by parents.
This issue has now also extended to the South of Ireland NCT test centres, Irish plans are to do all booked tests in 2 parts, current appointments to review those above ground items, then bring the car back at a future date to test ramp related items. Irish rules are first NCT test at 4-years, bi-annual to the age of 10 and then annually from that point forward. Read more
How has this happened?
MOT testing is meant to be regulated and surely the regulators check that LOLER is being complied with? Likewise that MOT stations have liability insurance - most insurers require compliance with the likes of LOLER and require certificates of independent inspection....
Hi,
Nightmare MOT passed 2 weeks ago. Brakes grinded on girlfriends car this week and now pads and disc need replacing. Paid £185 to replace which seemed a lot. Quikfit didnt pick up on mot that the pads were completely worn.... Read more
Brake pad depth most certainly is part of an mot test with a minimum requirement of 1.5 mm of friction material. Replacing discs and pads should be a fairly straightforward procedure, so I don’t quite understand what they have done wrong . Don’t forget it takes around 100 miles for the brakes to bed in .
Has anyone noticed in the last Escort model (the Mk6 1995-2000 or 2002 for van models) that there are 2 different styles of the front grille? What I mean is, on certain models it looks like this: s1.cdn.autoevolution.com/images/models/FORD_Escort...g where the numberplate is positioned at the bottom below the grille. And then there's those where the numberplate is in the middle and the grille instead at the bottom, like this one encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcS3...Y.
I'm still trying to figure out exactly what determines which design style is used. From my research so far it seems everything is so conflicted. Here are some examples:... Read more

How about trialling a lower speed limit for the near side lane of smart motorways - 40,50mph? Could be flagged easily on overhead gantries, and would reduce closing speed to stopped vehicles, and give drivers more time to stop or change lane. If speed differential between lanes was a problem, why not put a 60 mph limit on the 2nd lane, then the normal 70 limit on the outer two.
That said, as they are they are a death trap. Just talk to any traffic cop or ambulance driver...... Read more
The gap between safe area's should be determined by how far the car can freewheel from say an average speed of 50 mph. Adjustments to that should take into account steep inclines, as going up hill to reach your safe area freewheeling, the distance covered would be seriously short.
Better still, keep the motorway as it was.
Does anyone else find the enormous video billboards at the side of motorways distracting ?.

The lad is partially correct . Many auto boxes pre 90 ,s ish , had a vacuum modulator on the side of the gearbox . If the internal diaphragm failed , then atf fluid would be sucked into the engine. You would soon know about it as it produced a lot of white smoke out the exhaust .
The Youtube channel 'VHS Rallies' has loads of period videos of rallying from the 80s, including several RACs, rallies in Wales and Scotland, plus other world champs rounds like Corsica.
