Many thanks Read more

From the figures posted by DD above, the towing limit is 5 minus 4.

I have recently bought an M reg Peugeot 106 XSi 1.6L, my speedo has stopped working and was wondering if it was electronic or cable, and how to fix it

Hi
If I remember correctly it?s 2 cables and it goes in the passenger side then behind the dash to the speed. A real pig to replace.

I have just aquired a set of Ford 15" alloys to replace the 14" steel rims fitted to my 1999 1.8 ghia.
They are the standard ford type as fitted to later model focus'.
Can anyone tell me if I will have to replace the wheel studs as well as the wheel nuts to fit these safely? Read more

Simon

The studs should be exactly the same. Just make sure that you are using the correct nuts for the wheels.

When I was car shopping last month, I eventually had my choices narrowed down to the New Yorker I ended up buying, and one other car: a 1989 Merkur Scorpio...had I not found the New Yorker, I might have bought this. So, does anybody here have any experience with these cars, were they any good? They were always quite uncommon in this neck of the woods.

This particular one had 150,000 miles on it, and the dealer wanted 1799 for it (though I got him to admit he'd take 1500). Condition was OK for a 20 year old car, though I noticed the leather seats hadn't worn well. As reluctant as I am to buy imports, this one had a certain flair about it that really interested me, likely because Merkurs were such a rare bird here.

It's still sitting on the lot, BTW--anyone want it?
Thanks. Read more

Drove a 2.3 DOHC auto-good on performance and good on economy-in the 30's which for a car of that size and carrying capacity was excellent.

I just bought a 2001 406 estate only to have the speedometer fail within days. I have tried to follow the instructions on www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=4&t=74...3

and used the pictures from www.peugeot406coupe.com/howto/1929SJ.pdf

BUT I could not locate the part (1929SJ) anywhere behind the glove box (or on the drivers side).
After I tried the speedo did flicker back to life for 1.1 miles (perhaps I knocked a wire?) but it's dead again now.

If there is some other magic to the 2001 406 please could someone share it with me.

Thanks very much. Read more

The problem turned out to be in the gear box but the peugot garage diagnostics were all out so it was first blamed on sensors on the front axel then a suspected loose connection in the loom and finaly the gearbox. Luckily for me the dealer from whom I bought it was honerabal and had the repair carried out at his expence.

As I understand it the part that went wrong was a small nylon disk (which probably cost about 50p) buried in the bowles of the gearbox. Replacing it involves the removal of the gear box which I was told takes more than 7 hours and is therefor very expensive, but I have no Idea how much it cost as I didn't have to pay :).

Hope this helps someone.

Courtesy light comes on when I unlock the car but as soon as any door is opened it goes out instead of staying on until the door is closed and ignition switched on. Have checked all door switches, fuse and interior light fitting but no joy. Works fine on manual setting by the way. Any auto electricians out there who may be able to point me in the right direction? TIA Read more

Hello there,

I've a small car, 900kg, its dimensions are (L3900*W1650*H1420)mm, with a wheel base of 2340mm and the wheel distance (front1391mm/rear1371mm)
All I need to know is : while the stock tires are 175/65R14 .. is there any possibility that I change them into 195/60R14 or 185/65R14 (the most suitable sizes to speedometer)? What do you think? and What if I change the rear ones only? Would it be good?

Thanks

I think changing the rear only would get yo an mot failure

No, it's only a problem at MOT time if there are different sizes across an axle, or if a tyre obviously fouls the bodywork or suspension. The MOT staff don't know what size wheels and tyres should be fitted to each car - there's no list available to them to check against, and changing the wheels and tyres on one axle shouldn't be an issue.

However, I do agree that the insurance company need to be informed.

Most folks seem to go for Fords or Vauxhalls from the economical servicing aspect but do the roomers think this is a good idea?. You hear of hefty bills for all makes so is there a make or model used or new that stands out? My economy kings were Pandas years ago but this was offset by the rustbug which scothced any savings. my 306 dt was particularly cheap to be serviced. Though having a decent independant who only charged £27/hr combined with cheap parts certainly helped!

Hi my mum owns the above-mentioned Clio. The issue is, if the car is left standing for more than 4 days the battery is completely flat! She has had several new batteries and several people look at it saying things like ?it doesn?t make any sense!? There is nothing obvious like an interior light being left on. Has anybody heard of this or similar problem with the old Clio 1? Could it be the central locking? Some kind of solenoid drain? Any offers would be most welcome! Cheers Read more

Conversation in flow between young lady customer and young lady cashier as I went in to pay for my diesel: "what do I pump them up to?" "you'll find the tyre pressures marked on the side of the tyre"....

I normally ignore these sorts of conversations but intervened and suggested looking in the handbook, and that any pressure marked on the side of the tyre would be the maximum, and would be way too high for her car. At least the cashier now knows and (hopefully) won't give the same bad advice again. And one driver will (hopefully) have a look in her handbook!

The petrol station had a working airline (better than my local one, where it hasn't worked for at least 2 years). Read more

Incorrect tyre pressures particularly too high leads to a reduced foot print and increased stopping distances. In an accident the Accident Investigation Team check the vehicle tyre pressures for manufactures compliance.
That said I was filling my car with fuel and observed a young lassie stood by her car with the tyre inflator attached, when I finished filling up she was still blowing up the same tyre, I ventured across to offer assistance, she was trying to infalte the tyre to 32 psi but was reading the 'Bar' scale so the tyre was at 3.2 Bar yep 47 Psi now that would have been like driving on ball bearings.
