now i am wondering where i should take it to be serviced? there are main volvo dealers which seem kinda expensive (around the 350 mark) or i could take it to a local which may be around 120 pounds less

My 1998 Saab 9-3 2.0l non turbo has developed a strange chirrup/high pitched squeak when starting which vanishes after approx. one second. The timing chains are quiet, it runs with 10w40 semi-synthetic oil and a Saab oil filter. It has only done 72000 miles and is used for a 30 mile round trip every couple of days - no short runs at all.

The noise seems to be coming from directly underneath the rocker cover at the end where the sprocket to drive the front camshaft is.

Any ideas before I start dismantling it at the weekend to have a look? Read more

My 1995 golf auto is leaking transmission fluid, that said the gears still appear to be functioning ok. Where do I find the oil control valve and what does this do? Read more

A perfect example of why this website is so good! I am in no way technically minded so unless I have a problem, I very rarely read through the Technical Matters Forum as I am of no use to anyone!

However, if you switch across and read the thread on "Help required with 306", I can guarantee that you will find it interesting reading!

In short PeterD has diagnosed an engine problem by listening to a recording of the engine sound!

Fascinating. Well done guys! Read more

Wooo Hold on, its not a proven diagnosis yet.

Got to laugh... I've just driven back from Slovenia to Austria in a diesel Focus rental car. The predominant brand of filling station in Slovenia is called.... "PETROL"! So you pull onto a strange forcourt in a strange car with red PETROL logos on top of all the pumps....

Wonder how many people they'll catch out?! Read more

My SWMBO has the 1.3 and she likes it. It's not a car I would buy but she likes the economy and reliability it offers.

Why did you choose the vehicle(s) that you currently own/drive?
Was it the seductive velour material? Was it the 0-60 time? The top speed? Comfort? Economy? Price? Running costs? Some other reason?

Having chosen, are you pleased with it? Did the main reason you chose it pale into insignificence when you discovered that living with it was a pain in other areas?

Would you buy the same make/model again, and recommend it? Read more

By that logic Leeds beat West Ham by a win and a draw so should be in the Premiership ahead of them!

In Theory

When I ordered my new car last month, the dealer gave me an order form with the vehicle registration number on it, so I could arrange insurance. Using that information, I duly arranged my insurance, picked up the car about two weeks later and merrily motored away. Yesterday, two weeks after collecting the vehicle, I noticed that the car registration was actually different from what I thought it was (one letter is different). Lo and behold, the dealer gave me the wrong info, so I had given the wrong info to the AA. A new insurance certificate is now in the post, but at a cost of £25 to me. Who is responsible (or more responsible) for this, me or the dealer who provided the incorrect info? Second question, if I had tried to make an insurance claim, could that kind of minor error have invalidated my policy? It?s only £25 plus some annoyance, but my mind ponders. Read more

Proton Guy, When I posted an opinion similar to yours a few months ago, I got shouted down by everyone else. You will not convince the backroom that admin charges are a rip off, in fact they?ll go to some lengths to justify them. There is something so firmly cemented in the British mindset that they we almost look forward to paying them. He might drag himself all over town to save a few pence by filling up on grotty supermarket fuel but he?ll happily pee it all away by paying these extortionate fees.

I know what a Frenchman would say "I speet on your charge d?adminstracion!" And I know what a German would say "Das administration charge kan sie auf meine arskraken gerschlippen"

Imagine you were about to pay your gas, water, telephone and electricity bill and I knocked at the door offering to save you all the hassle by writing out 4 cheques, addressing 4 envelopes and licking 4 stamps for a small charge of £100 would you let me in or punch me in the face?
