Well hello and welcome!
£3k will just about get you an early Yaris.
They don't rust so if you look at one and it is rusty walk away, Reliable? well it's a Toyota so you should be OK there and generally from what i've seen most stuff is fairly do-able for a competant home mechanic.
Downsides? well parts prices aren't the cheapest in the world but all being well you shouldn't need to buy too many. Early cars are pretty basic inside with very few toys but if all you need is a runaround this isn't too much of a problem. Also not everyone can get on with the centre mounted digital dash but most people very quickly get used to it.
Anything else just ask.

If you don't mind whistling door mirrors, go ahead and buy one. The dash display is worth it alone!
Seriously, the door mirrors whistle very badly above 25mph. It is a known Toyota problem. My daughter had hers replaced under warranty with a newer style, but they still whistle (although more in tune than previously.
The 1 litre Yaris is a feisty madam, plenty of pull and returns excellent mpg. Bags of room in the rear, even for tall people like me.

sorry to ask it has got door mirrors!!!!!!!

SWMBO's had a 2001 1.3 for the last 9 months or so and really happy with it. It's a great town car and one the occasions where we venture on to the motorways it's pretty competent too. Not sure about the 1.0 engine but the 1.3 certainly make it very nippy. We consistently get about 35mpg (brim-to-brim) on mainly very short urban trips (less than 2 miles). On motorway trips, I'd say 50mpg is about the norm at 70-80mph.
The front legroom/headroom is excellent. Rear passenger space is adequate. Some people say that the boot is too small - once you get used to it and learn how to "pack", it's fine. We usually manage to get a family's weekly shop in there and if you're really stuck the rear seat does slide forwards to create extra luggage space (at the expense of any rear legroom though).
Finally, what's this about wind noise from the door mirrors? - I've never noticed any excess wind noise even at, ahem.. near 3 figure speeds!
Would certainly recommned

I can't say i've ever noticed any wind noise from the mirrors either.
The 1 litre is adequate around town but i find it a bit underpowered for distance work, although this could be down to me prefering bigger more powerful cars.
The sliding rear seat is a very handy function - i've comfortably sat me and 3 of my not so small friends in a yaris and done quite a few miles but if it's just a couple of people or you've got small kids you can slide the seat forward and have a decent sized boot.

thanks for the replys guys
any ideas on service parts prices?? cam belts/disc/pads.etc?

SWMBO has had the 1 litre and currently has the 1.3 litre.
She found the 1 litre underpowered for her 20 mile each way commute on country roads. On a steep hill she would get traffic tailgating because she lost speed so quickly , even taking a run at it.
We also had a clutch problem which was resolved under warranty but I was not convinced it was cured when we sold the car at three years old and bought the 1.3 which she loves.
We don't know about the whistling mirrors - Anyway when I drive it I think its a great little car.
Blue haddock will give you a better idea on parts prices - I found that they are pricey but then very little goes wrong.

That basically sums up the parts situation - not much goes wrong but when it does it will cost.

My SWMBO has the 1.3 and she likes it. It's not a car I would buy but she likes the economy and reliability it offers.
