I have a 1997 Peugeot 406 2.1 LXTD Family estate. I bought the car as a demonstrator. It has been an excellent buy but it has always had an irritating rattle which seems to come from the near side rear door area. I have taken the trim off on several occasions and searched in vain for the source of the rattle. I have also removed the trim housing the seat belts but with no success. Any ideas? It sounds like a piece of plastic rattling around inside a a plastic pot. The rattle disappears when travelling at higher steady speeds.

Any ideas appreciated. Read more

I had a similar problem on my Accord - my dealer cured it by lubricating the door switch for the interior courtesy light although I didn't believe it when this was suggested.

Have just purchased a Peugeot 406 2.0 turbo with 15k on the clock, mileage seems original, 4 years old. Its suddenly developed a fault after about 500 miles constant use whereby the speedometer reads 0 until you reach about 30-40mph and then reads normally from then on. But can jump back and forth to 0 at any speed. None of the other dials seem to have been affected.

Is this a common fault that only a dealer should attend to? Purchased from a non franchised dealer, but the guarantee is not covered by a fault such as this.

Your guidance would be appreciated. Read more

Earth fault caused by the car sitting around for most of its life. You can expect a lot of other faults for the same reason.

What does it mean when an auction has a car that is "vat qualifying".
For example, say a car sells for its book price of £5000. As a private individual would i pay the hammer price of £5000 and then
pay 17.5% on top. Or is the vat included in the hammer price. If it is the latter, would these cars fetch a higher price since a person registered for vat could claim it back.
Many thanks

VAT qualifying means that the hammer price will include VAT separately itemised and a VAT registered business buying the car for business purposes only (ie to re-sell or to rent or lease out) can re-claim the VAT, but must then charge VAT at 17.5% on top of the price it sells the car for.

In a commercial vehicle auction, the vehicles are sold plus VAT, ie happler price plus 17.5%.

Steve's right - you need a proper oil pressure check especially if the light's coming on above idle. That said, on a new engine I'd be worried if it was coming on even at idle - these things switch at probably less than 10lb/square inch, so get it checked.

You may have read my post earlier today about winning a new Corsa 12v Expression. I think that the high oil consumption of my Fiesta is partly a result of not changing the oil frequently enough - the car has been used mainly for very short trips, and the new Corsa will be used in much the same way.

Browsing this website I have noticed lots of discussion about oil types etc. What would people recommend that I do about frequency and types of oil changes for the new Vauxhall?

I have a Skoda Diesel Pickup in which I used Castrol GTD mineral oil for the first 10000 miles (with several changes), Millers Semi-Synthetic Diesel oil for the next 20000 (changed every 3-4000), and Millers Fully-Synthetic since 30000 (changed every 3-4000). Do I need to change the filter every time I change the oil? Are Fram filters OK? Read more

Many thanks for your help. Lubrication may be fun, but it certainly ain't simple.

I need to buy a car for the wife to do about 7000 miles per year.she wont drive big cars like mondeos which in my price range of up to 3k would provide good value.what smaaler cars would you reccommmend in this diificult section of the market?? Read more

If your 3K can stretch to 4, why not buy a new or nearly new Jap or Korean mini car. You will probably get a year's free insurance and tax thrown in. No offence to Kevin, but why buy a 5 year old Fiesta at that price.

I'm having a look at a 'new' Polo tomorrow, well 'w' plate anyway. I've heard some stories about the electric window switches, that they disintergrate of their own accord. I was told that VW buy these switches from Czechoslovakia or somewhere and they are pretty poor in quality.

Has anyone had any experiences with these switches ?

THE MAIN PROBLEM ON A POLO IS FINDING THEM, DOWN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DASHBOARD INSTEAD OF IN THE DOORS WHERE THEY SHOULD BE.

I currently drive a 320i saloon manual, E36, J reg and have been looking to replace it with a 320i Coupe Auto, approx N reg. So far little luck but a slightly older one has now been advertised and I will look at it tomorrow evening (26th March).

It is a K reg, 1993, 76000 miles, FSH, asking price £6200.

Can anyone please advise me:

1) What sort of things should I be looking out for/asking about specifically with regard to this model? What are likely to be the biggest areas of concern?
2) Is this a reasonable price (Devon area) if the condition turns out to be generally good?

Thanks for any help Read more

I agree with David Stone if you are mad enough to go anywhere near a main dealer. Actually BMW parts are cheap from "German and Sweedish" eg:£14 for a 323i cluch slave cylinder. "DMW" of Croydon 0208 655 4066 do guaranteed 2nd hand parts. I got a 328 manual gearbox recently for £250 and it was fine so I did'nt need the 3 mths guarantee. BMW quoted £1500 for a recon box plus fitting. Also, if anyone wants to know, the old 5 series (Y to H) alloy wheels fit straight onto the new 3 series, cost next to nothing and look quite good as the track is made slightly wider. Better for those square road humps.

Hi,

I have a problem where the rear door of my Passat, Feb 99, fails to engage the door lock when it contacts the striker. The problem appers to be in the latch not engaging. The striker appears to be making contact with the latch, so a simple adjustment of the striker position will not help.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I had this problem in a ten year old Maxi. It was solved by squirting in oil to free the moving lock bits. Perhaps no grease was used and things assembled dry!
