what is hp and bhp mean--confused Read more
Hi
A friend has offered me his Honda Shuttle. It is a 1998 R 2.3ls
with a full history in perfect condition. He bought it when it was a year old on 10,000 miles. It now has 35,000 on the clock. What would be a fair price for the car.
Many thanks

Off the top of my head, based on what they fetch at auction, I'd say about £8,500. These are excellent vehicles, by the way. 150bhp, decent 4-speed autobox, a/c on all and good handling for an MPV. If your mate gets sticky at £8,500 you wouldn't be daft to offer him a bit more.

Hi
I am thinking of getting an A class A170cdi to replace our golf tdi estate. I would expect to keep it for six or seven years and am looking at nearly or new cars.
There seem a lot of "new" ones advertised by non Mercedes sources.
Any tips on where to buy.
Two Questions
1. I would like a detachable tow hitch which was an (expensive)option on the Golf as we tow five or six times a year . It is a tidy solution to hide the tow-ball.
Question : Can these type of hitches be retro-fitted or is it a factory only option.
2. Some of the "new" non Mercedes dealer sourced cars have a quick heat option. I 'phoned the UK Mercedes Helpline who cannot explain what this is or indeed if it a UK official option.
Question: Anyone know how this works and any comments ?
Any other comments on the car in general ?
Thanks

Detachable tow bars- Don't be silly!
I am on my third hook on my 98 VW Passat.
The bar gets only intermittent and relatively light use towing my boat and has been fine for me
The problem is that I am on my third recall hook- VW say that this is due to problems with the hook coming off the car by popping out of its socket on the bar proper. Obviously fitted by those non mechanically minded?
( but then I am an Engineer!)
The unit was an option at about £700, the witter equivalent is more like half that!
The car is now out of warranty- how much for a replacement hook? They do wear out.
Does anyone know if there is anything special about 'diesel' engine oil?
I took a look at the castrol web site, and for it's GTD diesel oil it's main point was that it had 'A high TBN of 9.7 to counter the acids generated in diesel combustion'. But it's petrol oils had a TBN of 11, so on that basis the petrol oil should be better.
Come on John or Andrew, what do you reckon? Read more

I am intending keeping my wife's 94L Astra Convertible for as long as possible and would appreciate any advice re extending it's life, within reason. It's got the 8 valve 20l injection engine, has 32000 on the clock and we will probably do about 4500 miles a year of mixed driving. I've already had one query successfully answered about the soft paintwork and intend keeping the oil changed with semi-synthetic every 6 months. As well as the mechanical side is anyone aware of any companies offering a rustproofing service, I know cars are better protected nowadays but I remember from a MGB in particular what can happen when the dreaded tinworm takes effect.
Any advice gratefully received

Go for the more desirable TURBO !!!!! otherwise you might as well buy a Skoda 4x4 estate ( very good by all accounts ) Farmers round here love their Subarus
In cold weather the speedometer needle on my 1994 Audi 80 2.0E fails to move from its 'zero' position unitl the car is warm and is about 3 miles into a journey. I think this is due to the motor which drives the needle, sticking when cold but expanding slighltly and freeing up when warm. The odometer functions correctly.
Do you think a moderate dose of WD40 will do the trick or is it best to leave well alone? My only concern is that removal of the instrument cluster to tackle this job may incur other electrical problems.
Has anyone else seen this problem on Audi's or other makes of car? Read more
That happens to me sometimes on my '88 80. All I do is tap the plastic in front of the speedo and it loosens up.

My 306 1.9TD has developed an intermittant fault with its
tacho - the needle more often than not drops back to zero.
The first port of call is to check connections on the sensor,
but I can't find it!
The (old) Haynes manual says nothing more than it has a brown connector!
Can anyone help me locate the thing, or have any further suggestions
regarding the fault?
Thanks

Stand in front of the vehicle (with the bonnet open!!) The sensor will be on the back of the engine near the joint between engine and gearbox near the top of the flywheel. It's a bit difficult to describe but the sensor usually has a short lead attached with indeed a brown, three pin connector in it. Split the connector and using a DIGITAL multimeter measure the resistances of the sensor as follows. There are three pins, The outside two should measure infinity, one outside pin and the centre should read 300-620 ohms and the other outside pin and the centre should read infinity (infinity = no continuity.) The connector itself often gives problems which can be cured with careful cleaning.
I has a Lovely A4 avant standard spec 1.8 20valve (not the 1.8T). Does anyone know are there any companies that can provide a chip to uprate the BHP or are there any good uprating tips/ companies. many thanks Read more
virgil - many thanks for your very informative comments - generally have you any idea what the most basic upgrade for the current output 125bhp will produce with the most basic modification - or perhaps any modification will require the most standard of upgrades as a commonstart before enhancements can be added.
I have just bought a 3.6 jaguar sovereign, D registration, 113000 miles. The computer says that there is "Brake Falure" for the first 10 minutes of a trip and then goes out. The brakes are fine, even under heavy repeated application. Also the computer says "Bulb Falure" every time I apply the brake and then goes out till next braking. Both bulbs are the same wattage (21) and look the same brightness to the naked eye.
Does anyone have any ideas? Are the faults connected? The rest of the computer seems to work OK. Read more
Thanks Cliff and Dave. At £750 with MOT and 2 months tax I'll have to lump it. Just cover the relevant bit of the dash with tape and enjoy the CD player in the cool aircon inside (It's very cold) with cruise on. If I pass a shopwindow i can look at the 5 spoke alloys if I get bored.
It may be good value at the price for a year's motoring but you are right, it's not a german or sweedish car. Although it still looks OK, there is rot starting everywhere including the boot, under carpets and in the engine bay. Also the steering rack bushes are going so it wanders a bit! The leather and wood is still nice though.
hi,
thank's pete and john for explaining this--it has been extremely helpful---greg
