I am told nitrogen filled tyres rarely need checking because they do not deflate like ordinary air filled tyres. Is this true? Is it worth paying to change to nitrogen?

My Volvo XC60 has 18in wheels with 235x60 R18 tyres. I want to fit winter tyres; would you recommend the same size or should I consider 17in wheels with 235x65 R17 tyres? Would the ride be much different...
