The price of petrol and diesel rose in May 2016 – the third consecutive month of rises – according to RAC Fuel Watch data. On average, unleaded went up by two pence-per-litre and diesel by 2.2 pence-per-litre, which added £1 or £1.22 to the cost of filling the average fuel tank, respectively. -

The RAC believes that the average price of petrol and diesel will drop by as much as 4p per litre in the coming weeks, following a fall in the wholesale cost of fuel. The reduction - 4p in petrol and 2p in diesel - would mean average prices of around 129p and 137p respectively – taking the cost of fuel down to 2011 levels. -

Price cuts spark supermarket fuel war 18 Aug 2014 (News)
The round of discounts started with ASDA who knocked 2p off a litre of petrol and 1p off a litre of diesel. ASDA has also pledged a national price cap, which means drivers filling up at any of its 234 forecourts will pay no more than 124.7p per litre for unleaded and 128.7p per litre for diesel. Tesco has reacted by announcing a similar reduction in the cost of fuel, although customers can make additional savings via the supermarket's Fuel Save initiative. -

Drivers are now spending £5 more on fuel than they were at the beginning of the year. September saw pump prices increase for the second consecutive month, pushing petrol and diesel to a 2016 high. Data from the RAC shows that an average litre of petrol is now 112p-per-litre, while diesel has crept up to 112p-per-litre. -

Sainsbury's is cutting the price of unleaded petrol by up to 2p-per-litre and diesel by 1p-per-litre. The price drop, starting on Saturday 23 September, will be welcome news for drivers who've seen fuel costs rise steadily in the last few weeks. On Monday 18 September, the UK average fuel price for petrol was 119.8p-per-litre, with diesel only marginally higher at 120.5p-per-litre.
