  • Help - which used family car to buy? £5500 10 Jan 2013 (Forum)
I had been looking at Focus Estates, I can get a 2008 1.6tdci with 80,000 on clock, or a V50 2005 with around 60,000 on clock. I have read on here the sage of diesels repair costs and am now very hesitant to go for these though. The difference in fuel and tax costs of diesel to petrol for me would be about £700 a year though by my calculations, in favour of diesel obviously.
  • Advise on car purchase- Bravo or Panda? 1 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Her boyfriends family own a fiat garage so they want to get a fiat, due to access to cheap servicing and parts. She is wondering which is the best deal. £5k for a 2009 fiat panda 1.3 multijet diesel, 9,000 miles. Or £5k for a 2007 fiat bravo 1.9 multijet 120 diesel with 19000 miles. I think the bravo will be more comfortable for the 90 mile round trip she does everyday, but apparently the panda is a reasonable car at 70mph.

  • Skoda Octavia II 2010 - VW group 1.6 turbo diesel engine and DPF etc 11 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Anyone know any links to explain how the DPF works, and any problems, as I know the Fiat version can have problems, as the "burning cycle" requires extra fuel, and if this does not turn off it has caused problems with sumps being filled with diesel. Nice to drive, apart from occasional minor power drop, hardly noticeable, as if glow plugs and air con kicked in together, and CD player does not illustrate the CD name and track name.
  • SUV-Xtrail/Tucson/Rav4 18 Nov 2004 (Forum)
(Sorry for shameless repeat posting , but this got hidden in a long thread, and looking for any responses) I have finally narrowed the choice of SUVs that can be bought in the price range of approx £12000-14000. The Nissan Xtrail-Looks good, claimed fuel consumption 39mpg! on the diesel.Plus Nissans famed reliability record. Rav4-Claimed to drive like a hatchback, good resale values and reliability, dont know how good the diesel is though. Hyundai Tucson/Terracan-less dearer, though not so good resale values and reliability.

  • Merc e300d inlet manifold removal 26 Apr 2005 (Forum)
CAr is W124 E300D - 1995 - last of the W124s. I need to remove the inlet manifold to get access to a diesel pipe that is leaking - then rerplace the pipe + seals that join at the heat exchanger unit. The inlet manifold looks starightforward enough - any special things I need to look out for? Once off do I need to de pressurise the fuel system to replace the pipe - + do I need to bleed when the new pipe is fitted?
  • AA Petrolbusters 1 Dec 2004 (Forum)
To describe briefly: you can either search on the website or have an e-mail sent to you to inform you of the lowest fuel prices in your area, with individual filling stations named. I have just received an e-mail telling me the service is to close. Ironically, only yesterday I acted on information received to save myself around £1 on a tank of Shell diesel.
  • water vapour injection sysytems 16 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Its because the air drawn into the intake is denser with the water particles in it (I think). I've checked the fuel consumption on my car(old model Mondeo diesel)on days like this, and it is slightly better than on 'normal' days. I'm sure I heard of a system for injecting water into the inlet manifold many years ago.
  • Chrysler Voyager - car keeps breaking down with no prior warning when driving along 26 Sep 2017 (Forum)
This could be 10 miles from home to 100 miles away from home it just so unpredictable as it happens without any notice, i think this is extremely dangerous as if i was on the motor way my car just stops dead without any notice I tried a new fuel filter but the same kept happening i had it towed to a garage where they put the machine on a diagnostic machine - everything came back fine?? Although the mechanic could hear the tank kicking in he said that the fuel pressure was low- later found out this was due to a crack in the fuel filter housing and leaking, got this changed with a brand new hosuing unit but still no joy We have had a new fuel pump (the one underneath the car next to the tank) fitted drove perfect for a day seemed to have more power then 10 minutes from home the following day the same happened again :( my husband says when it breaks down it always seems as if the car is out of fuel (diesel) although we never let the car get below a quarter of a tank.
  • Volkswagen polo bluemotion 2010 - Help my fuel injectors busted a second engine! 10 May 2017 (Forum)
About a month ago my car broke down with a billowing of white smoke. It was transferred to a fuel specialist where they said one had became trapped open causing unburnt diesel to flood the engine, they replaced this fuel injector (£500) and then transferred my car to another specialist to have a new engine put it.
  • ford focus 1.8 tdci - injector/fuel pressure problems? 3 Mar 2014 (Forum)
hi all i recently purchaced a 2003 ford focus zetec 1.8 tdci from guy from ebay which stated in perfect working order. 46 miles after buying the glow plug light came on whilst on the motorway causing car to go into limp mode. a quick switch off then restart cured this for a few more miles where it kept happening. at one point it completely lost all power and shut everything down apart from the radio!  i took it to my local diesel specialists, who came highly reccommended who done a full diagnostic and leakage test. the fault came back to injector no 1 exess leakage and they advised replacing no 1 injector and also replacing the fuel filter. this i did at a cost of £220 for injector supply and fit and the fuel filter and the diagnostic was £65.

  • Kia Rio - Advice please! 21 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Hi   I just wanted to get a bit of advice with my car (Kia Rio Diesel, 2009, roughly 100,000 miles). A few weeks ago we took it to a garage after we noticed a small fuel leak when it was parked on a slope (had been driving fine otherwise). The garage had a look and there was a crack in the tank with a bit of corrosion – they replaced the tank and hose assembly.
  • The death of the diesel engine? 19 Oct 2013 (Forum)
This would force up the price of diesel, a by-product of the process. He also questioned the longevity of the tax advantages of buying diesel in some EU countries. “Europe exports a lot of petrol to the US, but if the demand falls, a lot of refining capacity could be taken out of the system, driving up diesel prices,” said Bakaj.
