Advise on car purchase- Bravo or Panda? - greenmeeny

Hi everyone, my older sister is starting a new job meaning 18k miles a year driving. Her boyfriends family own a fiat garage so they want to get a fiat, due to access to cheap servicing and parts.

She is wondering which is the best deal. £5k for a 2009 fiat panda 1.3 multijet diesel, 9,000 miles. Or £5k for a 2007 fiat bravo 1.9 multijet 120 diesel with 19000 miles. I think the bravo will be more comfortable for the 90 mile round trip she does everyday, but apparently the panda is a reasonable car at 70mph. Fuel economy for the panda is quoted at 76mpg at £30 a year tax. The bravo is meant to do 54mpg and £120 a year to tax.

I am interested in your views about which one you think she could get. Please bare in mind that it must be fiat due to the exceptionally low service and parts rates they get, including free insurance.

There is unlikely to be any issues with coked up diesel problems due to the high mileage she will be doing, what do you think?

If I was young again, 45 miles each way in the Panda would sound fun. Now it sounds like torture. That's a lot of miles in a small car.

The Panda will be cheaper to run, the diesel is also a surprisingly good motorway car - that would be my choice.

Will a panda's small 1.3 engine be durable enough to cover about 18k miles a year on the motorway? It's a city car, will it wear out prematurely and start causing high repair costs vs the bravo with its less stressed engine?

I wouldn't touch a Fiat with a Venician Gondala pole. They're cheap for one reason only. Most people, except Italians, don't buy them because their reliability is rubbish. Have a look at any motoring list to see where Fiat and Fiats come.

The Fiat 1.3 engine is a better and more durable one than the 1.9... and more economical as well.

Pandas are well built despite being made by Fiat..

Other Fiats are less so and I certainly would not buy any Fiat but a Panda.. although Punto quality has improved a lot in the past 5 years. Bravos quality is indifferent I believe.

Having said the above, I drive a Yaris and would not entertain a Panda.. a backwards step.

I am not a Fiat fan, but if I had access to a family Fiat dealership I would buy one. You would be daft not to - I wish I had family in the motor trade. As for your choice I could be happy with either.

Knock yourself out and pick the one you instinctively feel is the best for you and just enjoy it..

Sister/boyfriend/new job? Within 12 months she'll be "with child" and planning her maternity leave so the Bravo for the expanding family and associated accoutrements ;-)

I had a top of the range Brava ELX? (five door one) some years back. Good car but after a while I spotted a serious design flaw.

The bonnet hinges were sitting in a deep pool of water every time I washed it. I drilled a hole or three in the plastic wall to this well and waxoiled the hinge area but I wasn't happy.

Part ex'ed it.

OK motor but every now and then the air con would screech like a banshee. Intermittant..never did it at the main s******s. They never did find out why a brand new car did that. Oh and the drivers seat cloth wore through in five months. Replaced under warranty.

Myself I'd choose the more comfy one and the one thats probably more survivable in a shunt given the high speed motoring your planning. ie more metal structure between you and the outside world. That'll be the Brava I guess. The 51 plate Seat Toledo 1.9 SE TDI that replaced it was an absolute gem.

She bought the panda diesel today. It looks brand new, and has been garaged every night by an OAP who recently died. She reset the trip computer and got 62 mpg on a ten mile journey today- that is pretty good in my eyes. £30 tax should help aswell.

No need to worry about room, as the boyfriend has a doblo! She is just hoping that it will be comfortable enough for the long drive, otherwise she will p/ex it for something comfier! thanks for your opinions!

I hope she enjoys her new Panda. We have both a Bravo and a Panda (despite me being a ford main agent tech!), they are fantastic cars and neither has been the slightest bit of trouble.
