Nissan Leaf - New Nissan Leaf for £18K - A Great deal 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I may go the full 2 year term on this deal as I want to see how EV battery technology improves - don't want to be left with old technology! I think this deal is partly due to Nissan clearing 2012 Japanese imported stock prior to starting production in Sunderland in a few months time. Leaf sales in the last Quater of 2012 were not good by all accounts. The Leaf is a great car hampered by a high price so it is good to see Nissan trying to boost sales. -
Volkswagen Golf IV TDI - Golf TDI shopping Dilemas 1 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Always wanted another Golf, had a IV petrol some time ago, but this time a higher mileage 1.9 TDI 100 or 110 seems best. Budget is important here, £2500 max. I've driven shoping trolley's of cars for years untill they fall apart. so even a low priced Golf is going to feel like luxury to me. So is this a good plan on fuel costs (12,000 a year mostly country lanes or motorway)? -

Mitsubishi Outlander - Moving to Switzerland - Mitsubishi Outlander CVT 22 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I know this (petrol) version is not sold in the UK, but does anyone have exerience of it? Finally, since Switzerland is not a member of the EU, there is the option of importing a car from France or Germany etc. Whilst there might be a saving to be had (not sure how large), my gut is telling me to be wary of future repair, servicing and most of all warranty issues. Again, can somone offer experience on this please? -
Any - Next car - undecided between petrol or diesel 23 Jan 2012 (Forum)
I am looking at DPF free models as don't really want to fork out 1k at around 100k (will be buying 2nd hand with around 60-80k on the clock) I've had a few problems with my mazda 6 so want to move to a Jap brand with minimal/no European influence as reliability is incredibly important. The current shortlist: Honda civic (old model) with the 1.7cdti OR the type-s with the 2.0 i-vtec Honda Accord with the 2.2 cdti OR with the 2.0 i-vtec Mazda 3 sport which has the 2.0 MZR engine When buying I will be looking for FSH (evidence of cambelt change with 1.7cdti). -
Nissan Micra - What car to buy? 27 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Any advice what I should buy? I haven't got a budget at present but I won't have a large amount to spend. Most important to me is fuel economy (I want a petrol and not diesel), safety and reliability. I live in Scotland so it also needs to be good in ice and snow and start first time before 6am when frosted up and I'm leaving for work! -
Suzuki Wagon R+ 1.2 - Vibration under load/misfire 17 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Its not gear specific although is most noticable in 3rd at low speed and 4th/5th 45-60 mph. It smooths out above 60. The important bit is that the vibration completely goes away under engine braking and it disappears progressively as you decrease the load on the engine. Ive also noticed that the engine note sounds a bit off, like its misfiring abit. -
UK pea on China`s drum - Car Manufacture 7 May 2010 (Forum)
Perhaps we had it coming, with our old Empire and it`s arrogant feather hatted minions, forcing people in their own country to bow to the `superiority` of an imported genteel England into Shanghai. Or was it demanding black pudding and jellied eals instead of accepting and savoring local cuisine?. Perhaps while we had Rover we could justifiably snort along the road in a derision of `made in hong-Kong` - that derogatory term of 1950`s childhood symbolizing a pressed `tin` toy car - bought in the market with the expectation of the wheels falling off the next day. -
EU reviewing fuel taxes 21 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Refiners in Europe are investing in upgrading capacity to maximize their diesel output to meet the rising demand for diesel. On the other hand, a fall in gasoline use in the region and import demand from the United States have resulted in oversupply of the fuel, keeping overall plant utilization rates of European refiners low over the past year. "The Commission is currently looking at taxation of gasoline and diesel," Marcus Lippold, directorate of energy and transport of the European Union, told a conference. -
MPV - for 'a grand'? 14 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Buying secondhand, I appreciate is always to an extent a gamble...and I appreciate that as age goes up and price goes down, perhaps individual cars and their care received is more important than a particular make/model reliability index...So here goes... We are average. 2 adults, 2 children (well, one and one on the way). We are fed up with struggling to get a 2 year old in the back of a 3 door punto...and soon we'll have 2 kids to struggle with. -
Toyota RAV 4 (2000 - 2006) - To change it or keep it? 22 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Any suggestions? 1) as to what the Rav might reasonably be worth 2) a suitable cheap replacement - mileage not important - condition and ability to start after several days sitting outside will be! Just seems a shame to see the Rav sit there losing money and condition needlessly. Unfortunately I have to have the garage for all my work gear otherwise I'd let her use it. -
Replacing my Volvo S80 18 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Most of the year our staffy/corgi cross is also covered in mud and would be better in the boot than on a rug and strapped to the back seat. Reliability is now more important than ever as there are no buses/ taxis/car hire close by. I use my car to visit a wide range of business clients with my work as an Accountant/Consultant. Budget is £15K max, I?d be happier at £10K and I don? -
Guardian readers reject Global Warming! [ReadOnly] 13 Dec 2008 (Forum)
One thing that's amazed me is the way 'Global Warming' has fallen out of the news since the credit crunch kicked in. Apparently, the survival of capitalism is more important than the survival of the human race! Global Warming: The new secular religion of the post-materialist middle-classes. -
Is a Perodua a safe buy? 4 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I just have this little voice in my head saying Perodua are a mickey mouse business always on the brink of collapse ( well uk imports anyway ). Is this the case or am I just running scared of a relatively unknown brand? Id be interested to know HJ's take on Perodua as a company. -
I've repaired it, and i've saved all these bits! 21 Jun 2008 (Forum)
(its a fair cop guv) Has that triggered any memories, or prompted any confessions of jobs done, and discoveries of rather important parts that should really have been inside the repair. -
You could've knocked me down with a Rover! 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
My reply was "If I get to live that long with idiots like you around!" Obviously her dash to the bank was of far more importance that him potentially mowing down a pedestrian or a small child running round the corner. I was so angry and I don't care how old or infirm someone is, no-one has the right to drive onto the pavement causing the mayhem he did. -
Exploding 'super bright' bulb 7 May 2008 (Forum)
I fitted them carefully (I teach electrical/electronic engineering so know how these bulbs are made, the pressure that's inside them, and the critical importance of keeping the glass envelope clean). Driving on Sunday night I noticed the passenger-side bulb go out. When I got home I could see that it had exploded with great force. There is glass debris inside the headlamp unit and some scratching of the reflector where it has been struck by high-velocity shards of glass. -
FIAT - Fiat Dealers worst on 18 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Fiat allegedly, second from bottom overall and worst on "Helpfulness and attitude" I just can`t believe that, given the new 500, it importance to the company and the new management seemingly having gone through the dealer network. Both of the Fiat garages I use are great, although I must admit its mainly parts dept as I do my own servicing. -
Porsche Cayenne (2003 - ) - fairly unusual sighting logorrhoeic narcissis cut 15 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Best of all, it made a quite nice tinny blatting sound from the exhaust and showed good acceleration and braking in the stop-start (very important that for you dozy provincial types). Still it was a stretch and therefore beyond the pale (long chassis standard models are the longest cars a proper enthusiast will stand for IMFFHO). -
