Ford Mondeo - 2001 Mondeo 2.0tddi - various/related problems? 6 Nov 2010 (Forum)
The car was turning over but not firing, breakdown couldn't get it started so we waited for the recovery vehicle. That arrived to tow us, but then the car started. Drove it home (not on m'way), to begin with ran really badly, wouldn't go over 2000rpm but a few miles down the road the problem suddenly cleared and was running perfectly. -
Open to ideas 21 Aug 2024 (Forum)
Having passed my driving test 590 years ago and always buying diesel cars since I was 26 due to towing various caravans, I now realise that I need a completely new education about newer cars. My last car purchase was early 2016 which was a Honda civic, as this is the car that came out best on here for MPG at the time (except for electric cars) which I could not afford and was far too ‘new technology’ for me to want to deal with. -
Car Suggestions 15 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I no longer believe that there is a 'perfect' vehicle for me and I think (especially in the current market), £25k spent on a car that will always be imperfect is pointless. So, new parameters: £10k-£15k Auto Can tow a small trailer Can seat three in comfort Reasonable (circa 400l+) boot Must be reliable Must be reasonably economical (circa 40mpg +) Comfortable on the motorway Cruise control Fun to drive (not necessarily sporty, just fun). -
4 diif makes - Electric car range 4 Apr 2023 (Forum)
However, if you did go on holiday and decided to use the proper fossil fuel car because you wanted to do more then 325 miles per day ( 2 people driving 1 car ), and decided to leave your electric car at home, which might develop a problem and go flat. You might have to get it towed to the nearest dealer and fixed before you can plug the charger in. -

Hi Guys / Girls Another advice topic, sorry! I’m after a general car for towing the family around in, myself my partner and my little girl and hopefully another one on the way soon. Tailgating while overtaking 18 Feb 2019 (Forum)
This evening on the way home I was following a car and a horse box towed by a Land Rover. I overtook the car and was tailgated during the overtake by a muppet in a high end BMW. I pulled in behind the horse box. A few minutes later I overtook the horse box, and as before I was tailgated by the BMW. -
VW Tiguan 2.0TDI - Expensive engine failure! 22 Jan 2017 (Forum)
My Jan 2010 Tiguan suddenly lost all engine power (scary) and had to be towed by RAC to VW service dealer. Outcome was that the v-belt had partly "shredded" and a length of severed belt had whipped the cambelt, and knocked the timing out. Result - irreperable damage to the engine, and turbo charger also found faulty. -
Mazda CX7 - Complete engine failure - Happy new year - NOT 17 Jun 2016 (Forum)
Before I came to a standstill the engine cut out completely. Between Christmas and New Year I towed the car back to the local dealer for assessment/repair. They called me yesterday (31 st January) to advise that they had removed the sump and found the oil to be full of metal filings, that the engine was destroyed and that a new one would be required at a cost of between £7,000 to £8,000. -
Astra Elite 1.6v - Automatic gearbox 6 Apr 2015 (Forum)
I called the RAC and they linked my car up to their computer and it picked up that there was low pressure in the gear box due to low oil. My car had to get towed to a garage and they have just informed me that I need a new automatic gearbox and torque converter and that the cost would be £2600 (for reconditioned parts). I took out an extened warranty (a big con) when I bought the car two and a half years ago but they have said as there is a claim limit of £2000 I would have to pay the balance. -

Although brakes on automatics are larger than on their manual counterparts, ‘brake fade’ can still create a problem but manually locking a low ratio provides compression braking to enhance flexibility and braking control, particularly when towing a trailer/caravan. Conversely, when ascending a steep hill, manually locking a ratio may also provide better control and improve smoothness if the vehicle is hunting between two ratios." -
Luton meet and greet valet parking crashed my car 11 Sep 2014 (Forum)
They took nearly an hour to return our car on what's promised as a 10 minute service. It was late at night and with 3 small kids in tow we got in and drove home immediately. I noticed new bad damage to my front bumper and light a couple of days later. My insurance company phoned me a couple of days after that to tell me that the valet driver had crashed my car into another on the way to dropping my car back and the driver was looking to claim on my insurance as the valet parking company. -
Picasso 2.0HDI (2002) - Clutch vibration/tremor 28 May 2014 (Forum)
I don't have many spare £400 quids at the mo so am trying to soft peddle the old girl on the off chance that I can find someone who has had a similar experience and can suggest the simplist and cheapest possiblities first. The clutch does not apparently slip, and last weekend I even reluctantly towed a bogged in VW Transporter out of a ditch without problem and then drove the 300 miles home, so there seems to be some 'meat' left on the clutch still. All fluid levels ok Any suggestions welcome and thanks in advance. -

Peugeot 2.2 Diesel - Runaway Peugeot 2.2 Diesel 20 Aug 2013 (Forum)
all of a sudden engine started Missing, say 10 times, then power dropping, started to smoke out exhaust pulled into hard shoulder switched off engine as soon as I switched it off engine started to runaway at absolute max revs - very black smoke Let out the clutch in gear and stopped it after max 2-3 secs (FRIGHTENING!) all the above happened in less than 1 minute, no warning lights showed. Towed to Garage! in the garage: the EGR valve is showing as coked up and stuck, diagnostics are pointing to EGR problem 2 years ago EGR was also coked up and engine mgmt lite came on. -
Citroen - 2004 2.0 hdi Snapped cambelt at 61,500miles 24 Jul 2013 (Forum)
I bought my Citroen C8 2.0 HDI LX on the 1st May this year - 5 months ago. Last week at 61,500 odd miles the cambelt snapped on the motorway. I had the car towed to a main dealer where they were 99% sure of cambelt failure but they would have to remove the engine to see for sure. 2 days and £750 later I was informed that the cambelt had indeed snapped and that, because they could not get the diesel injectors out, a new engine would have to be fitted at a cost of £5986.52 I contacted the customer complaints dept at the car retailer where I bought the vehicle and they informed me that my 3 month warranty had expired and unfortunately they would not be able to help me. -
Ford Mondeo estate 2006 Tdci 130 - Mondeo diesel - smoke on startup 26 Apr 2013 (Forum)
2-litre Tdci, 47k miles, mixed use including local, long motorway trips and towing. The car was serviced by the book until about 4 years old, and annually since then. All done by local Ford dealer. Last service a month ago. Car starts first time and runs well, with plenty of power and nicely smooth. -
Vauxhall Vectra B - Vectra diesel diagnosing injector seals 18 Mar 2013 (Forum)
So I changed the leak off pipes today and tried to start it after the job was complete and still no go. Tried tuning it over for about 5 minutes, jumping it from another car. Then I towed the car so it was facing downhill, tried turning it over for another. 2-3 minutes and it started. The issue now is that I'm not sure if it is 100% fixed. I don't want to be away from home and find it won't start. -
Audi A3 + S3 (1996 - 2001) - 2000 1.8T - Shuddering/misfiring - Help! 23 Feb 2013 (Forum)
On the way home last night my A3 (2000, 53k) started "Shudderring" and losing power. I made it home and called the AA in. They said Coilpack and towed me to a local garage. The car was ran through the computer and identified injector, MAF troubles etc etc. Again, this could be caused by the a coilpack failure. The coilpacks were duly checked and each replaced but to no avail. -
Q7di Q7 - 4x4 choices 3 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I'm looking for a versatile, all-round, family vehicle which has high seating and space that a 4x4 would usually offer, but still have a premium feel or status with some level of performance. Some mild off-roading (green laning) would be good but I don't need any major towing capability. A mini bus (MPV) is not really an option, but a consideration against over-priced, over-rated 4x4s that will not be used to their true potential. I would appreciate any opinions on cars, comparisons and encourage constructive debate on the points I made, both for and against. -
Volkswagen Golf IV - VW Golf oil leak - new engine?? 25 Feb 2012 (Forum)
I went back to my car after 15 minutes and found a huge pool of oil under it, popped the bonnet to find oil had also come out of the dipstick and there was no oil left. It was towed to a garage and I was told it had an oil leak around the pump area and that the engine was making a bad noise. I was advised not to drive it and replace the engine. I am a student and replacing the engine is not an option for me.
