Autopilot fitted to cars. Would you trust it? 25 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The only steering and braking would be done by a professional driver at the front of the convoy. However the system, being developed by Volvo, could lead to a rethinking of the traditional ?braking distances? in the Highway Code. Volvo expects the cars to drive just 3ft apart in order to stay in contact. Full article at http://tinyurl.com/l5g8ua (links to The Sunday Mail, but also mentioned in other papers as well) -
MG MG ZS (2001 - 2005) - 03 1.8 Broken electrical supply 22 Jun 2009 (Forum)
My son has had starting proplems with this car for sometime but always managed to get it to go eventually. Until yesterday. He called out the AA and the guy managed to start it but when tying the leads together with a cable tie behind the ignition switch the main wire came off so now he doesn't have any supply at all now. He could then do nothing about it so had to leave it. I'm going over to see if I can make the connection good in any way possible. -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.8 wont start, yet spark getting to plugs? 27 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Hi there, i have a renault clio 1.8 RSI 1994, until recently it ran o.k, now it turns over and rarely starts, occasionally it has started after cranking for a while then stalls if foot off throttle, we replaced HT leads and they are relatively new plugs, spark is definately getting to the plugs, the weird thing is when testing the plugs for resistence two of the them are reading dead short, one is o.k and the last has high resistence! -
Mercedes Benz - 1985 2ltr W123 2ltr Pieburg 175CD carb problem 11 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I have cleaned out the petrol, cleaned plugs, took top chamber and piston off, all free and clean. I took off the rubber side pipe (leads to the air filter) and it was full of petrol, about half a litre. If I turn it over with the hose off, you can see petrol comming thro two bolt holes on the exposed side of the carb. Guessing the diaphragm has gone, but this is a complete guess. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.9 Intermittent battery light illumination 29 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The battery light only appears in the first mile of a journey (so when the engine's cold) and only ever TWICE........the lights oscillate whatever the engine temperature. The alternator was replaced 2 years ago, and one of the leads from the alternator to the battery was professionally repaired 18 months ago (because of complete car failure). I work for a battery company, and the car's battery is operating well.......the car starts well, so the battery must be receiving a charge. -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.6 Sparks from my ignition coil 31 Dec 2008 (Forum)
On lifting the bonnet and restarting the car i noticed that a spark was travelling from the top of the ignition coil (Replaced only two months ago) and the rocker cover. I feel that it was doing this rather than moving down to the ht leads then spark plugs. A quick spray of WD40 in that area and that solved the problem, until it rained again. Please help? Anthony -
FIAT Punto (1994 - 1999) - 96 1.2 Starting Problems( 3 Oct 2008 (Forum)
This problem grew and grew until it will not start at all. I have changed the plugs, checked for any loose or damaged HT leads, dampness etc. My battery is good and I even cleaned the face of the crank sensor. A lot of people keep telling me it is the crank sensor, is this right ? Can anyone out there help me ? Thank You shouting amended -
Volkswagen - Extended Warranty 6 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Car has had nothing done under warranty in the last 3 years / 45K bar faulty parking sensors (which was the kids fault as they dropped a juice cup in the control unit under the passenget seat - dealer told us it was our fault, but fixed under warranty as "goodwill") We did originaly plan to change it at 3 years, but given the fact its been trouble free to date think we will hold on to it (plus would like to see what the new Sharan is like next year). This leads to a couple of questions - should we just wing it and not bother with the extended warranty, and if we do go with the warranty are they any good (I know some of the aftermarket ones are a bit dubious) Anyone has any experiences of the VW extended warranty programme? -
Daewoo Lanos (1997 - 2002 ) - 1999 1.6 - Intermittant random engine fault 5 Sep 2008 (Forum)
But once turned off then given some time, when I start it again it runs smooth as. I have checked plugs, leads, injectors, fuel filter. the timing is spot on as I have double checked that too. The problem is with the car doing this only randomly I can not get other mechanics to see what it is doing wrong. Every time it does it I'm on my own. -
Audi - Audi's Anti corrosion warranty - experience of? 7 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I was a little concerned to find rust taking hold in the front wings. It is starting to corrode on the leading edge of the wheel arch infront of the wheel. It is like this on both sides. At the moment it is only just starting to bubble and hasnt gone onto the side of the wing where you can see it but expect it wont take long. -
How come "sporty" tyres cost more ? 4 Jun 2008 (Forum)
When new I could only get the car with the optional 17" wheels instead of the standard 16". ( As an aside the 17" wheels have a machined rim. This means the lacquer thins where the edges meet the cast finish. This leads to premature corrosion. IMHO don't have machined rims on your alloys. ) Looking about for 205/50 x 17 tyres, gives prices of around £80 each if you avoid the doggey eastern stuff. However if I look for the 16" equivalant, the price drops by maybe £10 -20. -
Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - N reg Avant 2.0 petrol - Occasional misfire 26 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The odd thing is that if the engine is switched off and restarted it normally totally dissappears. When I first got it, 10,000 miles ago I replaced the rotor arm, dis cap and plugs but the leads look fine. The fact that it can run clean makes me think it is a sender or of course the ECU. As it is not dire and not changing in its occurance I am reluctant to replace everthing or of course pay a dealer more than the value of the ncar!!. -
Rover - 96 620 Ti misfire 24 Mar 2008 (Forum)
It pops and bangs and once you change up it runs on three until it has cleared the unburnt petrol so it is definatly and electrical cut out. Things all ready changed Actuator pipe plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm coil He has even tried removing the outlet pipe from the turbo, but it still does it. It will do it consitantly evan in neutral. The car is standard apart from a stainless exhaust. -
KIA Pride (1991 - 2000) - '94, 1324cc. Stereo fitting 13 Feb 2008 (Forum)
If I could find wiring diagrams, and a plug with tail for the new R/C (scrapyard?) I could probably lash something up with chocolate strip. I doubt if I could find a suitable lead I could 'plug and go' with, unless anyone knows otherwise? -
Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 01 1.0 petrol won't start after break down 18 Jan 2008 (Forum)
It now turns over but won't start. I've booked it into a garage on Monday, but do these symptoms lead to any obvious conclusions (that me being mechanically minded can't see)? I'm just fretting about whether it might cost my son (or me) an arm and a leg.... Thanks for any words of advice! Steve -
Vauxhall Omega (1994 - 2003) - Yr 2000 MV6 wiring diagrams 23 Aug 2007 (Forum)
can any1 give me or tell me where i can get any wiring diagrams for my 2000 mv6 my abs/tc light is on and the speedo don't work, also I've been told that the headlight motor is controlled by this unit too as there isn't an adjuster inside the car is this true but i have another unit that can be put in but just in case its not that when fitted i want to know where the wires that lead off it go to increase 1 is damaged and needs fixing. the vauxhall dealers are too expensive and think that they know everything where i live. its an x traffic car so I'm wondering ,that when they took the bits they remove out they might have cut something by mistake? -
KIA Pride (1991 - 2000) - slow clock 10 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I've also noticed the fuel level gauge reads substantially lower for the first few minutes of each journey, again leading me to suspect low voltage. I keep meaning to put a voltmeter across the battery, but it's one of those things I need to do after the car hasn't been used for a few days, just before I go out in it, and it gets forgotten about until I look at the clock and think damn! -
Vectra-C Dashboard Access 23 May 2007 (Forum)
I did have a look at accessing via the foot-well, but the moulded panels seem to go right back around the hand-brake and rear vents etc so that looks like a lot of effort that may not lead me to the control box anyway. Thanks -
Unreliable cars - why? 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Given that many of these faults will ultimately be fixed under warranty and the sort of grief experienced by owners will often lead them to desert that marque why do the makers persist in using parts which are patently unsuitable, badly designed or just not durable enough - I'm thinking about the sort of astonishing, infuriating and even dangerous things we read about over in Technical virtually every day. -
Police Highways M-Way stop areas 9 Mar 2007 (Forum)
The entry ramp is being removed and returned to grass, with the unaltered exit ramp being the point of entry (presumably to reverse onto the ramp). Armco is being built for a short distance leading up to the entry/ exit point. In all my time driving I can only recall seeing one non authorised car in one of these areas- and that appeared to have broken down. I have not heard of any safety issues relating to them, and rarely see them being used, so does any one know the logic for this?
