  • Mondeo MK2 \'Squeak\' 21 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The noise ONLY happens when the key is put in the ignition and TURNED ON. It does not happen at any other time. Once the engine is running, the car moves approx 10 feet and the squeak happens. You can take the car on a 120 mile journey and never hear the noise again. It only happens when you start the car up. There is nothing wrong with the clutch as it was replaced 800 miles ago along with the hydraulic actuautor.
  • VAG 1.8 20V Turbo engines 10 Jun 2003 (Forum)
It was blind luck I was in the porch at the time and heard it, otherwise it'd have been sat outside in the pouring rain all night with an open driver's window. I had to run it up to my in-laws and stick it in their garage for the night. The dealer was a little sheepish when I returned the car to him this morning, not looking best pleased.)
  • Vectra 1.7TD Cooling Fan operation 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
In fact, a complete pin-out of the thermoswitch would be really handy! My reason for asking is that the car seems to be running hot (~100C - well, hotter than other cars I've had) when in slow moving/stationary traffic, and I'm wondering if the failure of this fan is the source of my troubles. Just for reference, so far, from shorting out various different pins on the thermoswitch, I can make the main fan operate, and then make it operate faster, but I can't get the aux fan to operate at all.
  • When is a New car not a New car? 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I have just picked up a new car from a well known supermarket (i wont mention their name at this point, but will be happy to do so if they dont give appropriate customer service). I was a little bemused by the system they run and the fact that you sign documents before even seeing the vehicle. when you do see the vehicle you are pretty much rushed off the premises as there are so many other cars coming and going. I accepted that my car was an import, but that was reflected in the price.
  • V70 electrical hum 6 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Knowing that the Climate Control System checks the amount of water in the vapour trap 50 minutes after switching off, and if necessary runs the fan to clear it, I checked again after the car had stood all night in the garage, incase the system needed 50 minutes to shut down, but the hum was still there. Any ideas, please? Many thanks.

  • Which Fiesta? 24 Oct 2002 (Forum)
She has the following main criteria: Up to £4000 (but if cheaper comes along then not a problem. similarly a little more available for the "right" car) Small and manouverable Power steering 5 door hatch/4 doors Reasonable to insure & run Reliable Low mileage (I know the potential pitfalls of this) and, seriously, Green She has no desire for any great performance, and her home - office journey is about to change from 2 mins back roads to 45 minutes mainly motorway.
  • Merc 300d 6 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I already use biodiesel in my existing cars, but I've read many times that the 300d is particularly suitable for converting to run on straight vegetable oil. (Anyone unfamiliar with this idea can check out the biodiesel forum at http://biodiesel.infopop.net before trying to have me committed.) I guess that I'll be taking the attitude that this would be a hobby car, not for daily commuting (at least initially), and that it could be used to experiment on.
  • Evil automobile 12 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I doubt I will ever drive a more scary car - I've never been so frightened in my life, although it actually turned out to be fine once it was running, if a little vague in corners. And as for the sound - just beautiful. Can't wait to drive it again, but I must get that starting problem fixed. Richard Hall http://bangernomics.tripod.com

  • Bleeding brakes 19 May 2002 (Forum)
I renewed the pads in my 940 and as the brakes were slightly spongy {more spongy than in my 740} I bled them. The result was worse - I could press the pedal to the floor, I went for a test run - clearly not safe. This morning {Sun 19th may 2002}, I?ve bled the breaks again. Still the same. I am 100% confident that there is no air in the system. I has a similar prob. a few years ago with a Rover GSI.
  • cutting out 11 Apr 2002 (Forum)
is cutting out again and, as usual, nothing showed when the garage put it on the machine. They've had it for a week now, running it around to see if it will do it for them. It won't, of course. And why they think they'll be lucky enough for it to happen within the space of the few days they've had it, when it can go weeks without even so much as faltering I don't know.
  • Milly 1 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Milly had been to our house a few times and I had picked up my daughter from hers. It is incomprehesible to my daughter and her friends thet Milly would have run away. She simply was not that kind of girl at all. But it is equally incomprehensible that no one saw something happen to her during her walk from Walton on Thames Station, down Station Road, across the traffic lights at The Halfway, then along Rydens Road to the road where she lived.
  • Rover Sterling V6 Engine Problems 29 Mar 2002 (Forum)
After alot of anguish I decided to have a Rover replacement (with some allowance from Rover), reassured by the main Rover distributor that any earlier problems with the V6 were now resolved. This was at 59K miles. After (perhaps unnecessary) running in over 5K miles) it has now developed a clatter/rattle coming from the upper engine/cylinder heard area. It's not obvious when starting cold, first thing in the morning but gradually gets noiser.
  • New Car Import Services - HJ please read 19 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Please take this company off your places to buy an import car on your FAQ pages and warn anyone else off from dealing with this them (New Car Import Services Ltd) or their new company New-car-imports.com Ltd I don't know what I will do yet as I placed my deposit on a credit card cheque and will be covered for a full refund under the consumer credit act 1974 (although I suspect this could drag on a bit). Could anyone tell me if I have any legal recourse to the new company (if it is indeed run by the same people) to get the car for the original price and what other options, if any, I may have available? thank you in anticipation of your replies, Mark Abbott aka mazza
  • End of the road for Guiness Label in windscreen?? 12 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Highways enforcement officer Dave Roberts said 34 cars and vans were taken to the DVLA compound during the three-day blitz at the end of last week. The owners face a £200 bill to free their vehicles. We have run operations like this before and more are planned for the future," said Mr Roberts. They are useful not only for picking up motorists who have not paid their tax but can highlight other offences as well."
  • Crime doesn't pay ... 11 Mar 2002 (Forum)
They ran off in different directions - one towards the car (AGAIN!), and the other into the reserve. The man running to the car (DITTO) was observed throwing away a pistol. He and the driver were later arrested and a pistol, licensed to the driver, was confiscated. Early on Sunday morning police returned to the reserve to search for a another fire arm.
  • leak..mondeo V6 ghia X estate. 28 Jan 2002 (Forum)
The water is accumulating in the rear O/S passenger footwell and to a lesser degree in the front passenger footwell. I am convinced the water is entering from the area of the bulkhead having first run off the windsreen and drained to a point where there is access into the passenger compartment. Has anyone any ideas where this point could be, or suggest an alternative to what I believe is taking place?
  • Alloy Rims And Tyre Repair/Replacement 24 Jan 2002 (Forum)
The problem of Quality Assurance (QA) in the garage industry in general is an important one. It will not go away. I am sure that those of you who run vehicle maintenance businesses, will have a particular view on this. Irrespective the issue of garage QA is pertinent to us all. Any ideas how to treat my damaged rim? It is bound to oxidise where it has been chipped.
  • Dilema (no it's not a car) 23 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Thanks for all the messages regarding the 309 Peugeot. Just had it back from the garage and it is confirmed that the Head gasket is going, car is only running on 2 cylinders, starter is also going, radiator is leaking and clutch is wearing thin, plus all the other problems i mentioned earlier. Well, considering i do not know the car's service history, just that it had this recon engin at 90,000, it appears that the previous owners did not take too much care of it.
