  • Nissan & Ford offers that special ? 20 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I might want to buy a Nissan Almera on which there's a special offer running till the end of March. However, I can only buy it next month or May at the earliest. Can I still get the same offer ? Is May a 'bad' month to buy ? Also, what do you reckon of the Fiesta and Focus ?
  • fiesta misfiring 17 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I have a 94 fiesta 1.3i which is only running on 3 cylinders at tick-over it is the cylinder furthest from the thermostat. I did a compression test and this was lower than the others. so I took the head off. The exhaust valve seats look worn so I'll sort them, but the question I have is - the engine has done 20,000 miles since a re-bore, is it normal to have the honing marks still visible in the cylinder bores. the reason i ask is that the cylinder with the lowest compression seams to have the worst marks. the car didn't seam to burn much oil and seamed to go o.k.
  • AI nr Berwick-Upon-Tweed 2 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Anyone know the AI well just north of Berwick-Upon-Tweed? Thinking in particular about where it runs close to the coast and village of Burnmouth. I've not driven this stretch for 10yrs plus and just can't remember it. Is the traffic heavy in July/Aug and does it dominate the locality? Thinking of a holiday property there but the A1, railway, village and coast all look squashed together in a very narrow area.
  • Flickering oil light Rover 414 15 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Rover 414 Sli 1990 'H' - just had the headgasket replaced for the 2nd time at 102K miles including skim, new oil, new cam belt and thermostat. Now 600 miles after the repair at 70 mph speed runs the oil light flickers on/off when I come to a stop or changing down in the gears - I can get it to go out at tickover by throtling up the tick over to about 950/1000rpm. Any ideas please as to what is the cause?
  • Tell us something we don't know! 23 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I'm sure it'll make all the difference when there are that many people who have decided to go underground with their motoring - I suppose it's cheaper for them in the long run. Hugo
  • 306 meridian fluctuating voltage 14 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I assumed this was the alternator voltage reg but a test at the battery sees 14.5v stable with the engine running. Switching on absolutely everything shows no fluctuation in voltage with it dropping a tad to around 14.3V. Therefore what I want to know is, is there another voltage regulator withing the car? Or am I missing something.
  • Battery Chargers 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Having just come out of hospital after 4 weeks I tried to start the car, battery flat.Nice man from RAC started it for me.I gave it a stationary run at variable revs for about 45mins,as I cannot drive the car due to shoulder op for a few weeks I have done this every other day now three times,so battery should be ok now.I have one of the older type battery chargers i.e.low & high charge its even has 6&12 volt option, could I still use old chargers on 5yr old car with to-days modern technology?
  • Drink driving crackdown? 2 Jan 2004 (Forum)
For various reasons that I won't go in to I was out and about on the roads of four counties at all hours for the last five days. In previous years I have run in to police road blocks (illegal but when did that stop them), enhanced car patrols, foot patrols breathylising those about to get in to cars etc, etc. This year... NOTHING. I only saw two police cars the whole time and those were in broad daylight cruising around the M25 doing the 'don't go faster that me' trick.
  • Freelander h/gasket, new engine??? 23 Dec 2003 (Forum)
A friend has a T reg Petrol Freelander that has been running warmer than usual for a couple of days. They've taken it to 2 garages, including LandRover who both say the Head Gasket has gone. Fine. LandRover want to put a new engine in it. This seems excessive to me.
  • Passat flood damage. 18 Dec 2003 (Forum)
My view is that the car will be a disaster waiting to happen, and that at the slightest sign of any electrical trouble (or preferably earlier) he should get rid of it! Any views? (The owner was previously intending to keep it as a long term 'run it to the death' vehicle). pmh (was peter)
  • H10 bulbs? To fit a Renault fog lamp. 17 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I run a fairly new Renault and am looking without much success for a replacement bulb for a front fog lamp ( no rush cos they only get used abou twice a year ). The bulb is quoted in the owners handbook as H10 which is what is stamped on the plastic bayonet fitting integral with the bulb.
  • Pug 206 overheating 17 Nov 2003 (Forum)
The only way to stop this is to pull over and let the engine cool down and then everything is fine again. I have started the car numerous times and let it run until the temperature gauge climbs towards 90 degrees and the fans work everytime!! Any ideas? Martin PS: Personally, I think the person that the person that designed the driver's position in the 206 must have been a sadist......
  • GM Oxygen Sensor - Failed again 8 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I fitted a new sensor around 18 months ago (Cavalier 16V Ecotec - Simtec 56)- now I'm getting the warning light intermitantly, usually after about 5-10 minutes running. Fault code is 13 ('oxygen sensor open circuit'). I've done more than 10000 miles in that time. Does anyone know if other factors can lead to early failure of the Lambda Sensor, or is it just a poor quality part (genuine GM - £115!)
  • Bentley vs the rest 4 Nov 2003 (Forum)
But come the 1930s and the entry of politics to motor racing (Hitler and Mussolini) the german marques were winning everything in sight and Bentley were running out of money due to the lack of sales of Presitge cars in the depression. Worth it for the historic film footage. Next week is the land speed record. Ian L.
  • Performance Petrol 20 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone use super unleaded when their car runs on normal unleaded, for extra performance? My Honda dealer suggested Shell Optimax for my Civic Type-R, if the price differential is relatively small, as it is 98 Ron as opposed to other super unleaded which is 97 Ron.
  • Vauxhall Omega 1998R 3.0ltr MV6 estate 10 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I have 17" alloys and was running on 235/45 radials(supplied new by the garage I purchased the car from.) Just fitted via Motosave, and on their advice, 235/40 radials. I have now no idea which is the correct tyre for this car. My handbook doesn't mention 17" wheels so no help there.
  • Incontinent Rover 9 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Two questions: The metal pipes to the coolant expansion tank are beginning to rust and metal replacements are a ridiculous price of £56!! Any reason why the whole run shouldn't be rubber compound, as some stretches already are, so long as I don't trap it, let it catch etc? The injection pump is leaking oil across the front of the engine, messy. My excellent local dealer is making gloomy noises about the cost of a replacement.
  • Omega battery/alternator warning light 1 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Could it be anything else. Omega is 2.5 V petrol. Ps at the moment battery is well charged and seems to run everything ok including starting. Kind Regards Ian
  • Mondeo TDCi 24 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Management light comes on and shuts down to "limp home mode". Cold starting is not good with rough running and smoke. The car went in last week for three days came out, ran fine for three days and went again. Now after another two days they cannot solve the problem, and we now await the visit of a guy from Fords,in 9 days time.
