  • Peugeot 307 - Antipollution fault petrol 1 Apr 2010 (Forum)
It's driving me made and i know it needs sorting, as soon as i fill up the light goes out and car runs ok .. What can it be, will it be expensive to fix.. Surely if the cat converter is at fault it wouldnt make my car sluggish and loose power . the exhust would make a noise surely.. Could it be a dodgy sensor or the fuel filter be clogged !!
  • Ford Puma (1997 - 2001) - 1998 1.7 zetec overheating problems 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
With car at fast idle for 5 mins or so the radiator is stone cold but the engine very hot, the temp guage fluctuates from mid way up to hot and back down and when i felt the top rad hose (near the engine) i could feel water boiling and bubbling from within the engine. With the top hose off the radiator and the car running no coolant comes out the rad even though the rad is full of coolant and also no coolant is reaching up to the heater matrix (i've taken hoses off and they are dry). If I take the hoses off the radiator and pour water in the top it flows out the bottom, likewise on the engine- water flows through the block indicating no blockages.
  • citroen berlingo Multispace - Poor hot starting and lumpy 2000rpm 21 Mar 2010 (Forum)
i can leave it a few hours and it starts and runs no problem, it just seems to happen with the engine hot. also around 2000 revs while driving it feels lumpy/ hesitant but will pick up fine when i put foot down. if i hold revs at 1200 the engine feels lumpy when standing.
  • Giving uninformed technical advice 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I`m not suggesting a `plonker` marker at the side of these posts - but you wonder if actual tech`s should have a means of identification. How about a software programme that would run an algorithm on all `advice` posts and attach a marker - `plonker` to `expert` - depending on content. You wish! ;-) (There`s some humour mixed with despair in this thread) All the best oilrag
  • Ford Galaxy (1995 - 2006) - 02 2.3 Mis Fire - At my wits end 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
No reoccuring condition that makes it do it so i am having a nightmare trying to find the problem. Garage have run a check and no fault codes come up, have changed leads coil pack, plugs fuel filter cam sensor and crank sensor and full service, but it is still happening and if anything more often than when i bought it 3 months ago.
  • The life and times of the humble glowplug... 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
However, I suspect that even if no yellow light appears on the dashboard, they may be used automatically after a cold start, to reduce pollution and aid smooth running for a few seconds. Clearly, these devices have developed a lot in recent years and now heat up far quicker than they did a few years back. Do you reckon that modern glow plugs in a modern engine that will probably start (eventually) in most conditions without their use, will last longer than in old IDI applications, where they were needed a lot, but perhaps didn't stay on after the engine had fired?
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe (2009 - ) - Grounds for rejecting a new Mercedes 14 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Here is my situation: 1 New E Class bought September 09 2 On delivery car had a bad rattle that required taking the centre consoles out to rectify, took weeks for them to do it. 3 Dec 09 received a phone call and the car was recalled for a software update 4 A week later a letter was received from Mercedes for another recall, this time to the fuel system (again software related) to "prevent loss of power and possible fire". 5 Two days ago, without warning, the car lost power and would only crawl along, sounds like it runs on two cylinders. It is awaiting recovery today. (snow was bad yesterday) I am losing confidence in the vehicle; to get your money back do the faults have to be the same recurring fault or is a cumulation of faults sufficient?
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 96 1.25 Cambelt - Timing 4 Jan 2010 (Forum)
For about the last 6 years I have run (amongst other cars) two P plate (08/96 and 02/97) 16v Fiestas. The older one I had from new, and the other was owned by my father for the first 34k of its life. I had always maintained that the earlier one was livelier, more economical, more flexible, slightly more economical and just nicer to drive.
  • New car? Rover has come to the end of the road... 8 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Hi all I have a problem that you may well have heard before. Been running a banger for the last 3 years (L-reg Rover 216, picked up for free off a relative - only done 84K, 40 of which have been in the last 3 years!) which has cost us a couple of hundred pounds a year on average to keep roadworthy, in addition to MOT and regular servicing costs.

  • MG - BGT 1961 1.8 Unable to start the engine 9 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Well from that point on the engine will not start. The timing keeps changing, I have had a mechanic it for 7 hours with all sorts of theories. We even had propane gas run into the carbs to tell if they are leaking(an very old trick and it works), I changed the head gasket. carbs(second hand) but still nothing. Just pops and bangs. We set the timing tio TCD and try to start then we double check and the rotor arm has changed its positon.
  • Ford Focus III (2008 - ) - 08 1.6 Coolant Loss/Use 5 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I had some trouble with this about six months ago as the car was using/loosing coolant, it went to dealers no problem found, all topped up and was fine. Since then the car has been fine on all the trips even long runs down the motorway. Now the other day we went out and drove about 7 miles stopped and I noticed the cooling fan had come on, had a look and the expansion tank is empty. I took off the cap and some water came back into the tank but only about 1/4 litre so I put a litre of water in and carried on doing another 30 or so miles till we get home, checked again with no serious loss and put about a litre in to bring up to the max mark.
  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 01 1.25 engine flooding when attempted start, rece 3 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Got a small issue with a 1250 zetec engine, Ive just replaced it into a 2001 fiesta so its the later of the 1.25's. The old engine had spun a shell but still run OK. The new engine did have 2 bent valves where it had been turned by hand with no bottom pulley on so I replaced the head with the one off the old engine. I then fit a new tensioner and belt and I also used the correct timing tools for the engine.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 Which is heater hose for refilling coolant? 30 Oct 2009 (Forum)
But can anyone clearly explain which is the heater hose that I disconnect and use to start refilling the coolant. Is it the one coming off the engine under the coil, or is it the the one that runs under the air filter, seems to have a join in the middle. How do I lossen the radiator drain plug? Do I need a socket or something else. If anyone would be kind enough to put a photo on that would be great.
  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - Automatic Gearboxes and Coasting/Freewheeling 15 Oct 2009 (Forum)
As I can sometimes see 1-2 miles ahead, I do it from 70mph sometimes on the dual carriageway and arrive at the slow traffic at a leisurely 30mph... My mecahnic has said " if you run an auto in neutral, the pump works extra hard above 30mph, or 55mph in some cars, and the whole gearbox can suddenly go". Does this make sense or is freewheeling / coasting an auto box possibly stressing the car?
  • Site issue - Firefox temp locking up, anyone else? 7 Oct 2009 (Forum)
This isn't every time - I haven't spotted a pattern, but it's often enough for me to have noticed it and for it to be annoying. It only seems to have started happening recently, perhaps this week. I'm running FF 3.0.14 under Linux (CentOS 5) - I know there's a FF 3.5, but I'm on a work laptop and if I want support from the IT department I can only install official CentOS updates; 3.0.14 is the current release.
  • Selling through BCA Sure-Sell or webuyanycar? 23 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Also, my nearest auction house is in Cardiff, would I get a better price for mine at one of the bigger auctions, ie. Blackbushe comes to mind. Also, my tax runs out the end of the month, so I'm planning to get rid pretty sharpish and hope I don't have to pay for tax - though it would be around £80 for 6 months so not quite as bad as it could be. thanks valmiki
  • Ford & Poss Vauxhall to offer 5 year warranty 23 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Original thread said "YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST = Ford & Poss Vauxhall to". smokie Hello, yesterday a bloke in the car park Got chatting about my car initially, then buying a new small car for wife and daughters as a run around, but wanted a 5 year warranty backed by manufacturer. I told him that we'd always bought as he was aware, Ford/Vauxhall or German cars = Mercedes/Audi, but seriously considering Hyundai because of the 5 year warranty.
  • Are premiums finally starting to go up? 16 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I've been pretty amazed over the last few years how cheap insurance has become - my Merc has dropped from £500 to £200 on the last few years with no changes etc. Is the end of that run now?
  • Volkswagen - Camper 1965 1.5 Electrical fault 14 Sep 2009 (Forum)
When I put the headlamps on The wire to the fuse box gets very hot and this heats up the brass Tpieces making the wire to the switch hot. I,ve traced the wire down to the fuse box and it is not hot, left the van running for 10 minutes and the wire gets to a temperature and gets no hotter. You could not grip the tPieces between your finger as they are too hot. I cannot find any touching or earthed wires. Is it usual for these brass/copper tpieces to hot up?
