Pirelli P6000s really that good? 9 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Well, they\'re certainly long-lasting and not too noisy but compared to my old Michelins, they\'re about as grippy as a greased weasel on a frozen lake. I\'m no a boy racer but I do like to drive fairly quickly on the open road when there\'s no-one about but the Pirellis scare theout of me when they start to lose it on a bend. Anyone know of a decent alternative to the Pilot Exaltos? Not time to replace the P6000s yet but I\'ve been thinking about Michelin Pilot Primacy for when I do. -
VW Golf door locks 7 Jun 2003 (Forum)
And now the red flashing lights that shows that the alarm/immobilser has been activated only comes on when you turn the key twice in the lock, which is the opposite of what\'s supposed to happen! 3. The pasenger door sometimes doesn\'t let me open the central locking, the key just turns and nothing happens. Has anyone else had problems with their locks? I am sure that I read somewhere that the locks were redesigned from 1999/2000 unwards can anyone confirm this? -
car insurance 4 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I rang my insurance company and asked them if I could reduce their costs by upto £1000 would they be willing to 'reimburse' me the loss of my excess and loss of NCBonus the following year(s). They said unfortunately they couldn't. Their hands were tied no matter what I saved them.'It's the system' they said. Howver they said they would still appreciate me telling them 'what I know' and any help to get their costs down. -
Noisy PAS 31 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The garage blokey topped it up for me (it had gone down but not loads) and said that it did appear to be noisey and now it is booked in for them to look at this Thursday. As I know nowt about PAS, is there anything I should watch out for to avoid B/S from the garage and also unnneccessary work? Anything I should ensure to check that they have done? I noticed that the fluid is a bit murky, should it be clean and clear or is a bit brown acceptable? -
free insurance or not? 19 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The other given is a 21 year old South African nanny (uk licence) and insurance is MINIMUM £2k in London, no joke....! yes, yes get another nanny I hear you say, but you try explaining to two under 5's them that you sacked the nanny 'cos the insurance is too high....? doesn't fit in to barbie world now...and it is Christmas So it seems that best deal is to go for one of those 12 month free insurance offers with VW or Renault, but knowing the 'going south' residuals for anything resembling garlic, I am erring on the sauerkraut side of things.. -
Traffic Lights on Rondabouts 27 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I use this roundabout a lot, but have not noticed any significant improvement in traffic flow at peak times. However, it does now scare the s*** out of me on occasions. This is when traffic is stopped on the roundabout by one set of lights and tails back to partially block the previous exit, causing traffic for this two lane exit to converge into one lane. -
escort 1.3 hcs 12 Jul 2002 (Forum)
So it would seem to him that my only option would be to replace the engine with another H.C.S. lump. My thinking is that it's not the piston ring/s that have worn but the stem seals. If anyone could enlighten me more i would much appreciate it. thanks. -
excellent police driving 31 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Point is, I was expecting to be tailgated to within a few inches of my life, which seems to be the norm these days for idiots speeding on the motorways if you happen to get in their way. OK, so if (s)he was in a hurry, maybe the blue fairy lights should have been on, but either way the speed seemed to be handled safely. Sorry if this is a bit rambling, I never could get to the point quickly (especially in the Clio) -
Ford Galaxt TDI sluggish performance 24 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I have a 1998 (S reg) Ford Galaxy 1.9 TDI 110Bhp with 28,000 miles on the clock. In mid-May 2001 I had the clutch & slave cylinder replaced (due to my wife's heavy foot). At the time of replacement the garage failed to reconnect the Turbo Charger in-let (?) -
Peugeot Cam Belts 4 May 2001 (Forum)
In the course of my work I change a lt of cam belts. Some is easy, some is not. Yesterday I had the misfortune to change the belt on an S reg 406 LX 1.9 Turbodiesel. I think I can honestly say yhat apart from a Toyota MR2 this has got to be the most unfriendly installation I have come across to date. Whoever "designed" the underbonnet area on that car? -
Cabrio joy 10 May 2020 (Forum)
The later Toyota engined cars are utterly reliable and a hoot to drive but the interior looks like something from the 80’s and they’re awful to get in and out of. I’ve also had the pleasure of a track day at the wheel of an Aerial Attom with a supercharged Honda VTEC motor in what is basically a shopping trolley. -

FIAT Doblo Cargo - Shaking on acceleration in all gears 7 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Crowbars have been applied to wishbones to check for free play. Top and bottom gearbox mounts have been changed. N/S driveshaft inner CV tripod joint replaced by independent Fiat specialist. When this didn't help, I got an entire new driveshaft fitted on the O/S. No improvement. So both inner CV joints are new. The van turns in tight circles in both directions, backwards and in reverse with no clicks or knocks from the CV joint area. -
Life story of a car - Polo C 1985 23 Apr 2010 (Forum)
We were lucky with those and it only suffered the repeated driveshaft outer joint boot failures that seemed typical of VW boots at the time. It`s time was up - but the Old Man watched it running around locally for a few months, driven by the lad working at the nearby garage - to whom it had been given. I`ve never serviced one car for longer and can still see, in the minds eye - every detail of the engine bay. -
Just another manic Monday..... 29 Mar 2005 (Forum)
s hit the car at its strongest point at the back. That is, the areas directly below the drivers side, rear light cluster. No lights or glass was broken, in fact, not even a scuff! She?s moved that lower corner of the car about 3 inches into the boot space, but the boot floor aint damaged. -
