  • 95-96 Corsa Sport (1.4 16v) Fault Light. 26 May 2004 (Forum)
Hi all, I recently bought a used N registered Vauxhall Corsa Sport, 1.4 16v. For the past couple of months it has run very nicely, until the recent spell of warm weather. When in standing traffic, or even pulled up at traffic lights, once the temperature guage begins to rise above 90c the fault light on the dash comes on.
  • Reporting pot holes 5 May 2004 (Forum)
It reminds me of Rogue Traders: they take the money (fuel and road tax), the finished product is appaling (pot holes) and they run away. Shouldn't there be a law protecting us consumers where if we pay for the road, and the road is poorly/ not maintained we should get a refund on our road tax and fuel taxation. Isn't that why we pay road taxes in the first place?
  • Financing new car advice 7 Apr 2004 (Forum)
However, my problem is that my mileage will be high ~30k/pa, and the trade-in on my existing car will be virtually nil, and with no deposit the finance/PCP/whatever will be very expensive (mainly cos of the mileage). So I'm not sure what to do.... shouldI keep my existing car, do the work and keep it running. Or should I take the plunge and replace with 1. a new(ish) car on PCP or loan and stomach the high payments due to depreciation or 2. buy an older (2-3yr) but solid car (bmw/merc?) that has had the depreciation hit but could handle for example 120k in the next 3 years?
  • flashing 'S3', Sterling 827SLi 18 Dec 2003 (Forum)
The mileage is 48,000 and after the 'S3', I changed the transmission fluid for the first time. The car and transmission run great. What could the problem be and what could I do about it? Is there an ECU reset process? I also have other, not so potentially damaging, issues, but I just now found this site. It may or may not be relavant, but the speedometer needle has also just started to occasionally jump around.
  • 306 d-turbo smoke 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone know what would cause one of these things to kick out white smoke on startup? Every time it's started (Especially when cold) it runs really rough for about 5-10 seconds and spits a cloud of white smoke out. Not a huge amount of smoke but enough to get me worried. Also it doesn't feel quite as quick as it once was... doesn't always have the same kick when the turbo cuts in but sometimes does.
  • Engine Insulation 2 Nov 2003 (Forum)
A research team led by Professor Norbert Deuben enclosed the car's engine with 30mm thick polyurethane foam boards. The engine was run to its operating temperature of about 100C before being turned off. Although the exhaust gas temperature quickly dropped from almost 500C to the level of the surroundings, the engine block cooled much more slowly.
  • VW Auto-Choke 30 Oct 2003 (Forum)
As all these problems occur within 15 minutes of starting when cold, I'm guessing the Auto-choke is a little senile and doesn't know what to do anymore. I've had the car 'tuned' (mixture, carb jets cleaned, timing) at my garage, and she runs sweetly when warm. Does a dodgy auto-choke sound like a reasonable diagnosis? And more importantly, how can it be fixed? New Auto-choke? Retro fit Manual Choke? What do those in the know reckon?
  • astra brake light problem 23 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Can anyone suggest a solution to my problem with the brake lights on my son's 1.6 P reg Astra premier, Im minding the car for him whilst he's working away, It,s not getting a lot of running coupled with me being away on holiday, when I came back and tried to start It the battery was'nt up to the job, now normally I would just put the jump leads on it but I'd had this gadget in the boot for ages unused that works by transfering power via the cigar lighter sockets, the Idea is to just plug in and wait for enough power to flow into the duff battery, anyway It did'nt work and so resorted to the trusty jump leads, the problem now is that the brake lights won't go out as soon as the ignition is turned on, my own theory is that it may have blown a diode allowing power to flow from another source and feed the brake lights, but where are they located and what do they look like?
  • Advice on tracing a private hire car no. 20 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I wonder if any of the backroomers are cabbies, or might know the answer to this one. I was very nearly run of the road last night by a psychopathic private hire car driver (and by 'almost' I mean 'about 6"') during one of the miost irresponsible and insane overtaking manoevres I've ever seen - I've never come that close to being roadkill in my life.
  • Stale odour from climate control 18 Sep 2003 (Forum)
BTW, I always have the system switched on, to avoid the potential (lubrication?) problem of leaving it off for long periods. That includes running it on cold for a few minutes at least once a week in winter. It's still just as good at blasting ice-cold air into the car on a hot day as it always has been. Any ideas? andymc
  • New or Used? 12 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I'm aware of the depreciation on new cars, but this is purely a private purchase of the heart, because i've never had a new car before and am really tempted to have the joy of running it in, taking care of it, keeping it in mint condition and just enjoying driving. However you can get some amazing cars for the same budget. My criteria are: Performance Handling Image Reliability Resale Value in 3 years.
  • 307 = Ford Pinto? 2 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The gist of the report is that cars built from April 2001 to later in the year could have a fault with the ignition, in that the key can remain stuck in the starting position and keeping the starter motor running. The starter motor isn't designed for this, so if it happens then it doesn't take long for it to overheat, which can lead to an engine fire. Scarily, this can happen quite quickly and cause faults with the electrics - such as activating the central locking.
  • VW scirocco problems 27 Aug 2003 (Forum)
As you accelerate the engine lurchs and loses power. If you dip the clutch you can keep the engine running smoothly by hitting the gas but as soon as you let of the gas the engine dies. Very easy to start afterwards but will not drive, idles ok (sometimes!). if you leave it for a minute it will start ok and drive ok!
  • fiat uno 'screaming' in gears 1-3 15 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Hi all, I've just got myself a 93 K Fiat Uno 1 litre Start (FIRE) and while it runs great generally, it makes a concerning screaming type noise when revved hard in 1st, 2nd and third gear, and occasionally 4th if pushed *really* hard. Although a novice I'm pretty sure it's not the timing belt slipping because the noise isn't as loud as that, nor as prolonged.
  • Freelander Air Con Mystery 14 Aug 2003 (Forum)
However, about 2 hours later the whole cycle starts all over again. The dealership insist that they have run the engine for up to 4 hours and cannot reproduce the fault. Have I missed something bleeding obvious, or is the dealership backsliding ??
  • Astra seatbelt pretensioner 12 Aug 2003 (Forum)
My local Vauxhall Spares/Breakers have quoted £55 for second hand pretensioner but I don't want to buy this unless there really is a fault and there doesn't seem to be any way of finding out without paying a dealer to run the diagnostic and the second dealer has quoted £60-£80 to do that!

Hello, My first ?modern? fuel injected ecu controlled car and here I am. I have a 96 Seat Cordoba which is running badly (erratic idling, loss of power, misfire, intermittent stoppage). Fault code reader gave ?throttle position sensor faulty?. I replaced the tps with a secondhand unit. Now the code given is ?
  • Toyota dealer v brokers. (Via Citroen) 4 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Everyone here knows only too well that I'm more than happy with our Yaris D4D CDX. (It just did 67mpg on a run!!!) However we now have a need for something bigger. The Picasso Hdi Desire could be had for around £11,00 for the latest incarnation of it. But I'm just a bit wary of going fom Toyota to Citroen - finding bits dropping off it and regretting it.

  • BMW e36 318iS engine cutting out 11 Jul 2003 (Forum)
It repeated this scenario 3 more times (cutting out immediately, with fewer and fewer miles)until it finaly refused to start. The next day it started fine and has been running in the garage for 2 hours trying to recreate the problem. Two questions. 1) Any experience/advise on what might be causing the problem and best PD method ? 2) This is the first time I have had a problem with an ECU controlled car.
