  • HUD (Head Up Display) 25 May 2006 (Forum)
But I would like to think that when I am driving, I am driving in a manner that allows me to glance at the speedo for a sec without running the risk of an accident. So what benefit is this HUD actually going to give us? Is it another development for the sake of it which will add to the cost of a car? Or will we be sitting in years to come wondering how we coped without it?
  • 4K - Recommendations 28 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I know this has probably been asked and answered before but I hope you will bear with me. My poor little, and very reliable, 1.2 Punto (dont laugh) has been run into the ground now - 164k on the clock. I'm giving it to my son as his first car and looking to spend up to 4k on a replacement. I do 12-15k a year, mostly motorway/dual carriagway driving. I'm have no real knowledge of cars and will probably look to buy from a dealer.
  • Dearer fuel=buying opportunities? 27 Apr 2006 (Forum)
In addition to my trusty 8 year old VW Transporter, which I may convert into a camper, (or may sell)up until recently I have always run an estate. My R reg GLS 2.0 Legacy, bought at 4 years old for £3.5k and sold last year for £1.9k, was my third, but I fancy something with more oomph, but similar reliability. My only criteria are a budget of £6k ish, reasonable space & pace, and 30mpg in rural driving.
  • Rover 827 pulling to the left 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I've recently got hold of a big old 827 as a run about (Big and cheap). I've driven it about 1000 miles so far and it handles pretty well. It stops and pulls away in a straight line etc etc. However on a couple of occasions when braking, it's felt as if the steering wheel is being pulled over to the left.
  • Repair or scrap? 19 Apr 2006 (Forum)
We have just moved to the area - public transport costs £6.50 a week less than petrol, and that's just the school run. It is a big car, tax is high etc. Should I fix and sell with MOT? or pay the man £90 and scrap? Or sell as is? Or keep and spend £350? What should I do - I am stuck on this one. Please answer soon, I need to let mr mechanic know.....

  • LPG/bi-fuel Cars 11 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I was on the Continent recently and over there many manifacturers sell bi-fuel cars, but not in the UK, it does seem. And does converting a new car to run on LPG invalidate its warranty? I'm new on this forum, so all advice on the matter would greately be appreciated.
  • Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - Air con problem? 10 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I was there for a couple of hours, but when I left, my car steamed up about two minutes after I had driven away. I actually had to pull over and run the fans at full power for about five minutes before the car cleared again. What I'm wondering is whether this indicates a fault someone, a leak somewhere in the air con system, or just that because it was 4° C. the air-conditioning pump had turned itself off, with resultant condensation.
  • unsold BMW (again!) 7 Apr 2006 (Forum)
We haven't even had any phone calls (or even Nigerian scammers) for a couple of weeks. Do punters get put off seeing the same car in several weeks running at decreasing cost? Is it still overpriced? I'm now thinking of ebay, but the prices on there seem to be pretty low (scraping £6k, where there is interest). At a bit of a loss! Have these cars suddenly dropped in value/ interest?
  • window tinting beware 5 Mar 2006 (Forum)
The station will refuse to test a car with the tint fitted. So thats another part of the motor trade thats going to run downhill as more cars now come with it standard and not many people will want the windows just tinted at the rear because it looks so odd. But i can see the safety benefits Hopeful none of you will get caught as there enforcing heavy fines if you do break the law.
  • Recommended Transmission Fluid Supplier 1 Mar 2006 (Forum)
The topic of transmission fluids often comes up on this forum and I thought I would give a recommendation to a supplier I've been using for the past year or two. http://www.specialtyformulations.com/ Its a company in the US run by a lubricants chemist who makes some really top-spec synthetic transmission oils (auto and manual trans) which are pretty cheap by UK standards (even allowing for shipping from the US to UK). I have no connection with this company other than being a very satisfied customer, having had many gallons shipped over!
  • Handling 5 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The term 'handling' is bandied about by many of us and yet I am not sure that that it means the same thing to all of us. The quote below is from the 'hire cars in the USA' thread that is currently running: "Handling not great though, I had to keep correcting the steering whilst on the Interstate to stop it wandering across the road. I previously thought Cadillacs only did that because the owners are all 90 years old."
  • Super mini's i've driven 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
As for the modus i could not decide what i was driving nothing special at all The biggest shock was the Picanto the small engine had plenty of urge it has cheeky looks but a very small boot and the interior is not quite there. Otherwise good One interesting point is on the 90 mile run they all use about the same amount of fuel around 7 quid even the diesel Renault was the same
  • New MOT - interesting quirks 17 Dec 2005 (Forum)
So officially, there was nothing the tester could do other than log-on and do a complete re-test. In practice, he managed to trick the DVLA computer into running an entirely fictitious MOT retest. I'm not sure how precisely he achieved this, but he said he could do any of the old tricks if he wanted, for favoured customers, and the new system was as wide open to abuse as the old.
  • Focus intermittent instrument failure 11 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Each time the problem has gone away when I've used the car later and the instruments have returned to normal. The problem never occurs or fixes itself when the car is running - only when the ignition is switched on. The trip meter keeps its value and the dials don't do their self-test sweep. The local Ford dealer say that it could be an earth, fuse or sensor problem.
  • VW Golf 1.4cl 1992 - cold starting probs 24 Oct 2005 (Forum)
110k miles on 1.4 carb engine. Frequently now (but not always) suffer 2 or three minutes really hesitant running from cold - actual starting is OK though, both from cold and from hot. Sounds like it's firing on less than all four, but clears itself and the problem never reappears after the car warms up. Plugs and lead and dis cap look OK.
  • Ford Ka - smell on braking/manoeuvring 12 Aug 2005 (Forum)
It doesn't usually happen when I brake - only under hard braking. It doesn't happen on start-up, otherwise I'd suspect the catalytic converter. I can do a long run and never smell it. It does, however, seem to be something that has developped recently. Spilled milk on the carpet has been suggested, but if that was the case, I'd expect the smell to be a constant companion

  • BMW 323 E36 full/semi-synthetic oil 6 Jun 2005 (Forum)
However my concern is the possibility of damaging the engine by switching between semi and full synthetic, particularly as I was intending to run this car to 200,000+ miles. I am sure that I have read something on this site saying that it is bad for older engines to be filled with fully synthetic. I have a few questions 1) Does anyone have any evidence to back up the statement that switching between fully and semi is bad?
  • 1991 Nissan Patrol 4.2 Turbo Diesel 27 May 2005 (Forum)
Can anyone also advise me what keep an eye on with this car and what to look out for meachanically. Can I expect hassle-free running with this tank? Finally there is a little oil leakage from the small pipe that goes into the top of the Garrett turbo. Is this the oil feed pipe? If so is this oil just normal engine oil shared with the rest of the engine?
