I know this has probably been asked and answered before but I hope you will bear with me.
My poor little, and very reliable, 1.2 Punto (dont laugh) has been run into the ground now - 164k on the clock. I'm giving it to my son as his first car and looking to spend up to 4k on a replacement.
I do 12-15k a year, mostly motorway/dual carriagway driving.
I'm have no real knowledge of cars and will probably look to buy from a dealer. I think I want something with a bit more power - 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0? - and a bit more comfort. Would it be more cost effective looking for a diesel rather than a petrol engine?
I was thinking of a Focus, Mondeo, Skoda Octavia or maybe a Rover 75 (possibly an estate version of any of these but not essential) but I would really welcome some advice from people who know a lot more than me about this sort of thing.
The mileage on these cars with 1.8 or 2.0 litre engines seems to be around 100k - is this ok?
Sorry for the list of questions and thanks for any help.

4k will get you a decent 1.6 petrol Focus - diesel probably not worth your while IMHO.
SWMBO's 51 plate 1.6 LX auto cost £5k from a Ford dealer with 40k miles about 12 months ago, so I'd hope you could get a 51 plate 50-60k miles manual for £4k ish, esp with no trade-in.

If you are in Essex this place might appeal and give you a lot of choice for £4000.

I should mention I have heard of them, have never been to see them or have any connection with them.
The only bug is they do not quote the mileages. The prices do seem very keen and you will get a lot more for your money than on dealers forecourt, but without the risk of buying at an auction.
Hope this helps.
