  • Mazda 3 ts2 2.0d 2008 - Sump oil rising fast 14 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Last month it was towed into a Mazda main dealer with the sump oil level very high, loss of power, uneven idle, and run-on after switch off (no dash warnings).  The dealer reconfigured the injectors, made a service update to the ECU for the DPF warning setting. Mazda refused the warranty claim saying this is a serviceable issue.
  • MAROONED - Will a small 4x4 help beat the snow? - Second-hand reliable and cheap small 4x4 12 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Unable to "waggle" our way back to the top of the hill...we sometimes had to reverse back down  - knowing a farmer could appear around a corner in his 4x4 - which was quite scary! Solution? So, this year I was wondering about buying an old 4x4 to run through the winter months. I was thinking about something like a year 2000 Suzuki Jimny. Also wondered about a Fiat Panda 4x4 (although I believe the all-wheel drive version starts at 2005).
  • Second hand diesels - misfuelled? 27 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Is there any way of telling whether a car has been misfuelled? If it has - and has been drained etc so that it runs again, what are the likely long term effects on reliability? Is it likely to pack up within months, where there might be some warranty left, or might it take a year or two to die? If an engine had been started (or attempted to) with petrol in it, is it a dead cert that the engine is on the way out?
  • New to car trading, need a bit of advice 20 Oct 2010 (Forum)
My questions are: 1. Is there really anyway I can tax the car? 2. Do I need to run back to the PO to get the yellow part of the v5?   Replies before 5:30pm most appreciated   Re
  • Volvo V70 / Saab 9-5 estate - What estate for under £3k? 19 Oct 2010 (Forum)
    - Hills: I live in a very hilly area, so the torque of a diesel is really useful. But I don't tow anything and only do 10k miles a year (mostly local runs up to 25 miles, and an occasional motorway slog), so maybe the relative fuel economy bonus of a diesel isn't so important. - Good seats. I'm tall and my back suffers poor support. I've had Saabs and this Volvo, both of which have perfect seats.

  • '03 focus tdci estate zetec - Focus '03 TDCI non-start 6 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Hi there, Hopefully someone a little more experienced may be able to help, about 3 months ago my focus tdci began getting harder to start from cold but was ok when warm, this gradually declined to needing to turn over for 30-60 secs before it would fire up (crank speed seemed normal) and when it did fire a large cloud of white smoke would exit the exhaust, before running smoothly for the duration of the journey. it then started rough idleing when cold and would occasionally fail to get above 500rpm rendering the throttle pedal useless until it was a little warmer and would return to normal.
  • Vauxhall Vectra Arctic II 1.8 16v 1999 (T) - Sudden jolt & engine warning light then stall 8 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Recently had an expensive MOT involving emmissions associated with major oil problems, namely the oil b*****ing the engine up as no-one saw fit to change it for years! Now, 3 weeks after getting that sorted and the car running smoothly, it's started to feel juddery while accelerating and today, twice, it suddenly "jolted", the engine management light came on, the revs went up to 4-5000 briefly, then it stopped. I pulled over, turned the ignition off, then on, and the engine management light went out, although the car still feels juddery/jerky while accelerating, but especially at constant revs in 4/5 gear.
  • '97 VW Golf VR6 - No cold air from A/C 16 Aug 2010 (Forum)
The system has been re-gassed recently and upon doing so, we found there was nearly the full amount of gas removed so I am confident that there are no leaks. I've checked all the hoses when it's running and they are all at ambient temperature, which isn't right, the compressor engages correctly. I then disconnected the pressure switch which disengages the A/C clutch, I bridged the pressure switch harness terminals 1 and 2, this caused the A/C clutch to engage and separately when 3 and 4 were bridged the cooling fans turned on.
  • All diesel - Particulate filters in hot climate 9 Aug 2010 (Forum)
The engine reaches operating temperature very quickly, so for most of the year (it can be very cold in winter here, even on the mediterranean coast) the exhaust will be operating at a much higher temperature than in U.K.  I do reasonable length runs and because of the relatively low traffic density it is easy to maintain speeds of 90/100kph on "A" roads and the occasional "Italian tune-up" doesn´t seem to generate much black stuff from the exhaust.
  • Ford Focus - Cooling fan problems 30 Jul 2010 (Forum)
I've got a 59 plate ford focus 1.6 tdci which i got in march. Ever since I got it a couple of times a week my cooling fan runs on for 20-30mins after the ignition has been turned off. My car has been in for repair 7 times and the fault keeps happening. The dealership say no fault can be found although they have replaced the cooling fan, cooling fan module, temperature sensor and cooling fan relay.

  • Ford Focus TDdi - Engine cooling fan 19 Jul 2010 (Forum)
However, I have recently noticed that the coolant fan seems to come on every time I accellerate to above 50mph or up a hill in 4th gear and when I slow down to 30mph or stop at a junction/traffic lights the fan will run for a few seconds and then switch off, so it is not on constantly. Not sure whether it has done it ever since I bought the car or whether it has come about recently. The temp gauge always stays in the middle whether the fan is on or off, so the engine appears to stay at normal operating temp once reached and the coolant level is fine.
  • Ibiza - Fiesta or Ibiza? Any recs? 30 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I currently have a Puma which is starting to need work doing and I think it may be time to change before throwing good money after bad.  I'm looking for a small car, preferably 3 doors, with air con that will be reliable to run, won't drink fuel and will drive well.  I quite like the look of the Fiesta and Ibiza - any opinions on either one or anything else similar?  Budget about £9k plus whatever pennies I get for trading in the Puma!
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 01 2.0 Resetting an HDI ECU 30 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Today the engine management light was on again, but nothing irregular about the idle speed or anything else come to that - the car runs normally in all respects. So the question is do I have to pay up to get the code read again with the likelihood that it is the same problem rearing its head again or is there a way to reset the ECU on this motor without the diagnostic box of tricks?
  • ford mondeo - Ford mondeo mk3 petrol fuel pump problem 31 May 2010 (Forum)
Hi i run a taxi company and have 2 1.8 mondeo's and they both had the same problem of now real power and jutteryness when accelerating, changed everything that you would think i.e spark plugs, ht leads, air filter, pretty much everything then the last thing we tried for a mere £35.00 second hand was the fuel pump which sorted out the problem but after big money spent on them.

  • Toyota Carina E 1.6 auto 1995 - Auto transmission fluid level 10 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I am checking the oil exactly according to the Haynes manual: making sure the oil is hot by driving for a few miles, then with the engine running going through the gears, then removing and wiping the dipstick, then reinserting and checking that the level is between the min and max on hot. Haynes says the oil can be checked when cold and it should be between min and max cold but to always recheck once hot, the cold marks are 'for reference only' whatever that means?
  • Ford Escort 1.6 16V 1998 - Whirring noise on acceleration 21 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Hi all It's been awhile since I last posted so hope everyone is well. I've had my Escort nearly 2 yrs now and it's been a smashing little run about. Now done just over 120000 miles. I've have somethings replaced but this has just been general wear and tear stuff. Over the last 2 days a whirring noise at the back has become apparant. It is silent on idle but starts once you reach about 10 mile ph and gets louder the faster you go.
