Report: Peking to Paris, day 18 14 Jun 2013 (News)
The two Holdens sounded glorious, and drowned out the cuckoo nuisance, and car 38 the Ford V8 of Mike Reeves and Michelle Jana Chan swept through the wood at an even, steady V8 growl - recent oil-pump problems presumably cured. Looking very slow was car 15, the Ford Special - it has a worn rocker-shaft, but there are plans to change it overnight. Most crews found the target set for the section easy - and results therefore only changing here and there. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 4 Apr 2015 (News)
Would you agree that mid-way mileage and time is best? MN, via email Absolutely. Oil has to cope with severe condensation-inducing changes of temperature during winter. After its first 10,000 miles an engine cannot ever have too many oil changes. It's the cheapest way to preserve an engine. -

., Kahn said he would, ‘Call upon the Government to introduce a diesel vehicle scrappage scheme to support those who wish to change to a greener car.’ It’s propsal that is backed by the Environmental Audit Committee, which recommended a diesel scrappage scheme to help tackle a ‘public health crisis’ in air pollution. -
Hundreds of classic diesels could be crushed if new scrappage scheme goes ahead 23 Dec 2014 (News)
The report, by a cross-party committee of MPs, says, the existing road tax system, which favours diesels because of their low carbon emissions should be changed. The report concludes, ‘The Government should consider the scope for subsidising diesel vehicle owners to retrofit their engines or a national diesel vehicle scrappage scheme on the basis of a full cost-benefit analysis that reflects the different circumstances, costs and benefits in urban and rural areas.’ The report says that 28,969 people in the UK were killed by air pollution in 2010. The report is also calling on the Government to introduce a national framework of Low Emissions Zones. -
Report: Peking to Paris, day two 29 May 2013 (News)
The Porsche 911 from Switzerland of Ulrich Koerner and Johann Fueglistaler was changing shock absorbers this evening, having confessed to running far too fast and then suddenly hitting a large crater. An evening under the car when everyone else is having dinner becomes the penalty. As the sun set out over the vast desert plain, a few crews were clearly going to be very late for dinner. -
Year Old Polo Makes 80% of List at Auction 13 Jun 2001 (News)
The parcel shelf was missing. There were marks of abuse all over it, especially in the service history: just two oil changes in nearly 60,000 miles. Trade book was £3,725. To get the car into any sort of properly saleable condition would take around £750, so I reckoned £2,750 tops. But someone started the bidding at £2,800 and the car stuck at £3,000, possibly because VW Financial Services were unaware of its horrible condition. -
Used Van Buying Guide: Ford Transit 2006-2014 20 Nov 2019 (News)
Maintenance on a Ford Transit Be wary of the oil light, you need to get the engine shut off quickly if it pops up. If you don’t it will likely seize the engine. Blame the oil pump, which can fail without any notice. On 2006 - 2012 models the engines often require a new vapour valve. -
Used Pick-Up Buying Guide: Mitsubishi L200 Series 4 (2006-2015) 27 Nov 2019 (News)
It’s necessary to change the differential oil every four years, though if it’s used extensively off-road or regularly tows then it’s worth checking more often. If it looks dirty it will only cost around £60 an axle to have it replaced, which is a cheap preventative measure. -
How To Check Out a New Car 27 Aug 2001 (News)
Open the bonnet to get some light through. Then look under the car and all over the engine for any sign of oil or other fluid leaks. Start the engine and listen for any strange noises. Select first gear and make sure it selects easily. Make sure there's not too much slack in the parking brake. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 9-5-2015 9 May 2015 (News)
Investigations in Germany showed that the problem with the timing chains was inconsistent stamping out of the links on worn machinery that left burrs on the steel. But many chain cam engines rattle on start up simply because the engine oil does not get to the tensioner quickly enough. That does not mean that the chain has stretched or is about to snap. You write that servicing has been carried out at the correct intervals. If the engine has not has an oil and filter change at least every year or every 10,000 miles then that might be the reason. -
A Grand Monday: Nissan Micra, £599 6 Jun 2016 (News)
It's even got the original Nissan mudflaps front and rear and original hubcaps while the rear numberplate bost the name of the supplying dealer. Looking at the service history, it's had the timing belt changed at 27,000 miles and has been given plenty of TLC over the past 12 months. This includes four new tyres, new oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, fan belt, and spark plugs. According to the seller, this Micra drives perfectly. -
A Grand Monday: Austin Montego 2.0 Mayfair 27 Oct 2014 (News)
This 2.0-litre version (which had just one owner up until 2012) features five-speed manual transmission and, according to the vendor, has recently had work carried out that includes a new cambelt, ignition coil, plugs and an oil change. The bodywork looks to be unusually smart, with only a small amount of rust on one rear wheel arch. The car has apparently never been welded, while the interior is described as ‘remarkable and outstanding’; the upholstery looks to be immaculate, and there’s no sign of the sagging headlining that seems to affect so many Montegos. -
Report: Peking to Paris, day 25 21 Jun 2013 (News)
Between here and Paris there are circuit tests and mountain climbs, with Slovakia, Austria, and Switzerland organising closed-road sections. It means the final results could change quite dramatically from here on, with crews eager to move up the leader board, and at the same time, hang on to their Gold and Silver medals. -
New Book About Morgan Plus Eight 10 Jul 2009 (News)
Once described by revered advertising copywriter Tony Brignull as "the sort of car for people who wear bobble hats and have oil under their fingernails," it was assembled by hand using combining traditional British craftsmanship with muscular performance in a uniquely graceful design. It was, in many ways, the last of the traditional 'hairy-chested' British sports cars, combining old-fashioned styling with prodigious power. -
Used van buying guide: Mercedes-Benz Vito 2003-2015 22 Nov 2019 (News)
Prior to that the recommended service intervals was 18,000 miles, the Vito coming with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty from 2010 onwards. For ultimate peace of mind, the oil and filter should be changed every 12,000 miles or 12 months. Running costs should be reasonable, with a major service costing around £180, a full service around £155, and an interim service £130. -
A Grand Monday: Fiat Panda 1000 CLX 20 Feb 2017 (News)
Overall, then, a viable project, and there's plenty of evidence of recent TLC, including a new cambelt, water pump and oil change. There are better Pandas out there, but this one is among the best at the cheaper end of the market, and shouldn't take too much to bring back up to scratch. Or, if you just fancy a Panda to try one out and aren't too bothered by cosmetics, away you go - it has a long MoT and is mechanically well sorted. More Entries for Barons December 13th Classic Car Auction 23 Nov 2011 (News)
Low-owner cars are always popular, and the beautiful 1966 Daimler V8 250 has been in the vendor’s ownership for 24 years, with just one owner prior to that. It has covered just 59,000 miles from new, has benefited from an oil change approximately every 500 mile and has been garaged all its life. The car was repainted in its original colour of opalescent British Racing Green by Southern Classics some 12 years ago and the interior retains the original carpets, leather and headlining. £14,000-16,000. -
Police Auction Real Crowd Pleaser 13 Dec 2002 (News)
The bigger cars may lack sunroofs but these days most of them are fitted with aircon so that’s no sweat. Oil services are usually carried out every 5,000 miles. Timing belts. tensioners and rollers changed every 30k miles. And even liveried cars are no longer any colour you want as long as it’s white. -
Rush to Buy Sends Auction Prices Soaring 6 Jul 2001 (News)
£17,900 wasn't quite enough for a 28,000 mile 2000W E46 318iSE Touring automatic with just one oil change in its history. But a surprisingly low £14,400 was all it took to land a 66,000 mile 97R M3 Evo four door. And you should have seen the crazies battle over a Mercedes. Mega miles mean lower import duties in the Far East with the result that an eminently exportable 123,000 mile 98R C180 Sport auto in silver started at a sensible £5,800 but went on to sell for all of £9,200. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 11-4-2015 11 Apr 2015 (News)
The reason is shrapnel ground up during the early life of the gearbox becoming so pulverised it gets into the gearbox bearings. That's why I recommend a change of gearbox oil after the first year, though almost no one takes this advice. If this hasn't happened to yours and there is no whine then you have been lucky. But it wouldn't harm to change the oil if you intend keeping the car, which now has classic status.
