  • 2007 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 petrol - Wynns fuel injector cleaner 22 Jul 2013 (Forum)
A good run on the motorway always fixes the problem. I am considering putting a bottle of  Wynns fuel injector cleaner for petrol engines into the fuel tank.  Some of my friends say not to touch  any fuel cleaners with a bargepole, that it will cause damage to  my engine. Others say it will help with my problem.
  • Ford Focus - 2002 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi - Diesel Fuel Pump 12 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Hi,   The above car has been diagnosed with a failed diesel fuel pump @ 90k. Does anyone know the approximate cost of repair and how much needs replacing? I have read that the injectors may well also need replacing due to metal being released when the pump failed and that this, along with the fuel pump, will make it an expensive job.
  • Any - 3rd gear at 30 - is it more fuel economical? 31 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Apparently, it is usual for motorists to rush into 4 th gear, and trundle along at a little over idle engine speed , whereas it would be better to change down to 3 rd and drive at higher engine revs. The instructor added that at just over idle speed not all the fuel in the engine is used, so is wasted, however at say 1800 - 2000 rpm all the fuel is used, thus avoiding wastage. I’ve tried the 3 rd at 30 and accept with the engine working harder I am more likely to drive at a slower speed, but this fuel economy comment just does not compute.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9tdi PD130 starting problems when parked 29 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Had the car from new, estate sport, 110k miles, last 2 years had problems starting when parked nose up ( only a few inches and progressively getting worse ), turns over fine after several mins cranking it starts, runs rough, feels like fuel starvation, fine after 10 seconds of running. ( has worn the starter motor out over time ) When parked nose down starts perfect every time. since problem fuel filter and fuel pipe to PD pump changed ( Known rubbing point under the main air intake tube at the back of the head ) Can not find any air or fuel leaks.

  • Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - 01 2.0 HDI Fuel consumption 25 Apr 2009 (Forum)
It did have a 2 week period last September when, despite being on the usual trips, it switched to 60 mpg and then dropped back to 42 again. I'm always light footed, and never exceed the speed limits. The car has covered 94K but the fuel consumption was the same when I aquired it at 52K. The measurements have been take over individual fill-ups (larger error) and a few cummulative fill-ups but both give the same reading. Has anyone any ideas why the fuel consumption is so high?
  • BP payouts for fuel mix up 14 Sep 2004 (Forum)
The company announced the unprecedented step after scores of drivers became confused by Ultimate, the firm's latest range of unleaded fuel. Express 11/09/04 p47 I haven't seen Ultimate for sale yet- I assume the hose/ trigger is black like diesel normally is?? Isn't this carte blanche for anyone with a dodgy engine to go to BP and fill up with the wrong fuel and claim for a new engine?
  • Diesel Escort 95 Fuel problem 24 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Now (parked pointing uphill) the engine will start (after a lot of cranking) but stops practically straight away (there is half a tank of fuel). I tried pumping the little button above the fuel filter (I think Richard W gave advice on this before) and instead of being hard, was pumpable for at least 10 seconds. Does this mean there is an air leak?
  • Magic fuel gauge 22 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Trip recorder showed I'd done some 200+ miles since last filling the tank, so I knew I had about a third of a tank left. Pulled off motorway to fuel station. Turned off ignition (needle on fuel gauge swung to empty as normal. Turned on ignition - needle swung to full although the tank wasn't. Repeated twice. Same result. Put in fuel and went home.
  • Petrol and Diesel Prices 5 Jul 2023 (Forum)
The supermarkets in particular seem to work as a cartel with no real differences in their prices and priced in an area not particularly worried about independent retailers.  They know that store visitors will probably buy their fuel so they will get a good market share whatever.  So if they decide to hold their margins only GOV are going to get them to change their ways. So nothing will change will it?  As to motorway fuel prices these are ridiculous but people are buying fuel at these prices!
  • Mazda 3, 2.0 skyactiv petrol, 2015 - Fuel economy- short trips 13 Jun 2022 (Forum)
We’ve had our car for just over a year, but it’s really poor on fuel on short journeys, if we don’t have a motorway trip on a full tank full then it averages below 25mpg, this is checked by amount of miles to fuel used, not through the cars reading, it’s fully serviced with the correct oil, filters and spark plugs, non of the brakes are bing either, I’m wondering if it’s just the short runs that cause this or if I should be looking for any other issues, motorway journeys average 45mpg, we never had this problem with our 1.8 mk8 civic.
  • Has fuel panic buying started? 15 Oct 2021 (Forum)
Any signs of panic buying of fuel where you are? I noticed my local Shell filling station had Out-Of-Use signs on half of its fuel nozzles yesterday. Today, on the way back from Southampton, I needed to fill up with petrol. I did see a couple of filling stations with some cars queuing out onto the road and all looked to be busy.
  • 2005 VW Polo 1.2 - P0172 - Fuel Trim too Rich 1 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Brand new OEM parts were used. The car has been running perfectly since (it was very sluggish and used tons of fuel). I now have error code P0172 coming up. The car is again noticeably sluggish when accelerating between 1500 and 2000 RPM. Fuel economy seems fine. When I clear the code, it returns within a few miles - the engine light never comes on though.
  • Peugeot 207 - Fuel Accumulator Access - HELP! 7 Jan 2019 (Forum)

  • Nissan Serena 2.3 Diesel - Difficutly getting this vehicle started. 4 Feb 2014 (Forum)
The vehicle is proving difficult to start after changing the cylinder head. The fuel pump was not allowing fuel through initially. Somehow the imobiliser on the pump had been activated. Overcoming this brought fuel to the pump and it did fire up but still failed to start. Each attempt to start brought fuel leaks at the spill line joints.
  • Peugeot 407 SW - Fuel guage issues 9 Oct 2013 (Forum)
I seem to have an issue with my fuel guage. Recently, the car started juddering slightly, and I thought it seemed like it felt short of fuel.  I pulled into a nearby garage and filled up.  Problem was then solved.  The guage was low, but not in the orange when this happened.
  • Hyundai Santa Fe Diesel Auto 2007 - Can I use heating oil as fuel in an emergency? 23 Nov 2011 (Forum)
I appreciate the tax/ customs and excise issues, I am just looking for a technical comment. I guess I might need to enhance the lubricants in the heating fuel?
  • 'P' Reg Renault Laguna 2ltr Automatic - Dead Fuel Gauge - 'P' Reg Renault Laguna 2ltr Auto 4 Sep 2011 (Forum)
'P' Reg Renault Laguna (2ltr Automatic) - Leaving work in heavy rain, switched on lights, fan and radio, central locking working fine, wipers, internal and external lights all fine... after about a hundred yards the fuel gauge dropped to 'nil' even though I have about half a tank on board. I checked the fuse panel and cant see a fuse that refers to the fuel gauge. As far as I can tell everything else is working fine...

AA boy told me I needed my injectors overhauled garage then tells me it is my fuel pump. Can anyone shed some light on this.
