Advice on value of v.low mileage Mondeo 2 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I have been tasked with selling a Mondeo on behalf of a retired friend who is in his 70's. He and his wife also have a Polo and are going down to one car, hence the Mondeo has to go. Any advice on what I should ask privately appreciated, I was thinking £2500 but am I dreaming.?! The car is: 1998 R reg 2.0 GLX Mondeo Estate Automatic Air Conditioning Metallic maroon 30,600 genuine miles One private retired owner from new Full Ford Service History (serviced annually, stamps in the book at 5119, 10696, 15405, 20280, 24801, 27860, 29626 and 30462 miles) 10 months MOT 4 months MOT Very good condition, few minor scratches here and there as you would expect but sound, drives perfectly. -
coolant loss Volvo V70 tdi 14 May 2006 (Forum)
All I can think is that the cap on the expansion tank might be playing up? It is the later green one (I know early V70's had a problem with the caps). Is there a suitable dye (like the A/C dye) that can be stuck in the coolant - or should antifreeze show up under uv anyway? thanks Mark (Volvo quality ? pah) -
Heavy bill! 10 May 2006 (Forum)
ve just had my first service on my L reg Honda CRX (2 seater roadster). I have used a main dealer as it?s my first service on this car and I?m aware that it needs a little TLC. The service has identified quite a few items that need doing: The service itself was £168. The other items that apparently need doing are: Cam cover gasket = £42 New battery = £65 Something (? -
Peugeot 406 Rear Discs & Pads 13 Apr 2006 (Forum)
But Haynes manual says all thats needed is to push it back using a screwdriver Against the old pad or using a G-clamp. I've just had it Mot'd and its reported that the o/s/r disc was corroded so as I've got front judder I thought I'd change the discs and pads all round in one go. Anyone out there tell me which it is?? Thanks -- These are the views of Robin the Technician with 35 years in the trade. -

VW Sharan VR6 blown head gasket 17 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I've been lumbered with a pig. I have a Sharan VR6 Auto with a suspected blown head gasket,it;s losing water but there's nowhere obvious, nothing in the oil etc. I went to VW main dealer and explained problem. He said the head gasket was probably blown. He then said that it was what they called a "throw away engine" and wasn't worth fixing. -
Cold weather and Audi Multitronic auto 11 Feb 2006 (Forum)
In cold weather (usually below 2 centigrade) the vehicle won't drive against even a slight incline until the coolant temp hits 20 centigrade (according to Audi, there is a torque limiter) This renders the car a pain to drive on frosty mornings and has left me stranded in multistorey carparks, on cambers etc until the engine warms up. I have driven the same vehicle in minus 10 centigrade in northern europe - no problem. New A6's have been upgraded to 163bhp so the problem is resolved. Not so for the "old" (2002) ones like mine. Audi have been courteous and efficient, declare it as known problem, but say they cannot fix it. -
Serious bluetooth obsolescence issue 25 Jan 2006 (Forum)
A colleague picked up a brand new S class Jag a couple of months ago. It's one of the fully loaded end of line 2.5 versions (the 2.5 petrol engine has since been dropped from the range). Part of the package was full bluetooth kit working in conjunction with sat nav display screen. -

What age to stop driving? 13 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Surely older drivers should know when to call it quits, both my grandfathers gave up driving in their late 60's and this was 25 years ago when there was a lot less traffic on the roads. Perhaps it is time for a compulsory maximum age limit - 80 perhaps and then it is "game over".....what do you think? (Dons tin helmet....) -
Honda accord electric tailgate problem 19 Oct 2005 (Forum)

I Have A Question - Volume 92 13 Oct 2005 (Forum)
tried all the big name stores but have been told that they don't stock them anymore, and i "should really be buying plasma or LCD now". There's a few 32" models about, and more 28"s, but can't seem to get anything bigger, although i recall they were plentiful a year or two ago. Anyone know why these have all suddenly disappeared, or even better, anywhere that stocks said TV's. -
Modus operandi of car insurance industry 26 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Having read several threads on the subject of car insurance I can only assume that the modus operandi of the car insurance industry has changed in recent years. At one time it was not possible to claim directly off the other party?s insurers. You either claimed off your own insurers and they attempted to get reimbursement from the other party (or their insurers) or (for uninsured losses) you claimed off the other party. The other party would then either pay you directly or claim the amount demanded from their insurer. -
Supermarket Fuel - Quality? 25 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have read recently that certain BMW engines (manufactured in the 90's) were the subject of a recall to prevent possible damage due to high sulphur content 'mainly in low quality supermarket unleaded' Is supermarket fuel really any different in quality to branded fuel - I do recall hearing this claim many years ago when the supermarkets started selling fuel and were undercutting local garages but is this still the case. -
2000 Vectra 2.5 V6 CDX Temps/Coolant 29 Aug 2005 (Forum)
The coolant is full (I mean to the top) and temps reach 95C within minutes and then seem to stay there. I've heard of a V6 software upgrade for the V6's info display which might get rid of the warning message but dont know if this applies in this case? I'm wondering if it gives a warning when there is too much coolant in? Also, are the temps too high or is it normal for the Vectra to run at 95C? -
Punto 1995 diesel MOT failure 21 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Car is run for daughter to use during her royal visits from Uni in Summer. Failed MOT as both rear sidelights were u/s. I recalled I had noticed one faulty 4 weeks earlier, and as she dropped me off for holiday had given her £20 and told her to take it to local garage to have bulb renewed. She took it to a major chain of tyre/exhaust specialists, who fitted 2 new bulbs and told her the fuses must have blown. -
Subaru price please? 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Also what is the likely p/x on my 2001 W plate Legacy GL saloon, solid blue, a leggy 105k, dealer history to 55k then me with Subaru filters etc, recent cambelt fitted by dealer, no aircon, good P6000's, tidy looker but usual scratches, chips etc? What sort of deal does anyone reckon I could get? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. -
VW Golf 1.4 Emissions failure 8 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I inherited a VW Golf S 1.4 recently with only 16000 miles on the clock. I thought it would sail through the MOT, but has failed on emissions level. (1.054 was the lowest it would go from memory). I was told that the garage would be able to diagnose whether it was a faulty lambda sensor, or whether I'd need a new cat. -
Best car you've had 6 May 2005 (Forum)
A follow on from Schoolboy's'worst car',what is the best car(s) you have had?Could be the most reliable/economical or just one that gave you a good time or brings back fond memories. I'll start with an Anglia,it was the 1200,such power,I was a teenager,it was my first car.I thrashed it without mercy until the three bearing crank snapped one day.Undeterred I rebuilt a Cortina engine and dropped that in.Eventually four of us drove it to Morocco, sadly KLE 625D never made it back, but that's another story. -
New model A4 ergonomic problem 15 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Picked up my new model A4 2.0 TDi S-line 2,500 miles ago. Already have problems with the gearbox (obstructive and crunching into 2nd gear, sometimes can't get first at all!) and suspension like a bouncy castle (I think the front dampers are faulty) so much so that I bounce out of the driver's seat on some B roads.
