Decadent youth 29 May 2008 (Forum)
I read in a small inside-page item in today's comic that while two thirds or so of 18-25 year old men in this country are happy ironing their shirts and smalls, only one in ten knows how to maintain a car. I would declare my contempt for these mincing, scented degenerates if I didn't fear that a hundred or so of them might surround me in the street and stab me slowly and untidily to death with the tails of their little combs. -
General Question: Alloy wheel, slow leak. 14 May 2008 (Forum)
I don't want to spend money on this, but I don't want to have to keep pumping it up every time I want to use the car! -
Hydraulic tappets / cam followers now common ? 13 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, I'm thinking of car replacement and wondering what features I should look for. Looking over several posts, it would appear that timing belts and CR diesels are a risk, but what about hydraulic tappets / cam followers ? -

FIAT Punto (1994 - 1999) - Grating hinges and wonky doors 23 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Bought an old FP to get me by until the new car arrives. Both doors make an awful noise when opening - a sort of grinding noise as though the hinges are knackered. One of the doors moves so much on the hinges that it actually hits the wing upon opening! -
Rover 200 and 400 (1989 - 1996) - starter motor 21 Sep 2007 (Forum)
it's a 1993 214 with a 1400cc k series twin cam. took SHMBO shopping last night and she wouldn't start afterwards (the car) lots of clicking and whirring noises but nothing from the starter motor. After some head scratching the memory cells kicked in and reminded me of similar issues with my old mk2 Escort. So out with the hammer (doesn't everyone carry one?) -
Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - Copper sump washer 11 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I've just just changed my oil, and the sump plug had a copper washer, quite surprising I thought for a four-year-old car. It was quite badly mangled. I managed to beat it reasonably flat, and anneal it, and it seems to be holding. Where can I buy something like that nowadays in small quantities. Halfords (the dreaded H word) used to have a book on the parts counter with small parts like this laminated in for identification, but no more. -
How much is a MINI really worth? 13 May 2007 (Forum)
I was surprised to see that £9k would only buy you an 52/03 Cooper or 53/04 One (obviosuly with a/c). Are these cars really in that much demand still, and retaining such value, or is the Mini Cherished scheme particularly overpriced? I'm not sure I could live with the lack of space, but it was a whimsical notion that left me a bit jaw-dropped, as those Coopers are practically 5 years old and have been replaced... -
VW Polo steering issue 3 Apr 2007 (Forum)
My friends 2001 VW Polo 1.4 has suddenly developed a steering problem, whereby there's way too little response and too much play in the steering. I've only driven it in 1st and 2nd gear but it's clearly not right, steering like a 40 year old bentley. Tyres/pressures are good, there's no judder or wobble (at least at low speed), all is smooth but there's way too much play. Car was recently serviced and nothing was brought up regarding suspension parts but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean much... -
Peugeot 206 - Dealing with Peugeot 13 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Dear All, the tappets on my Pug 206 (2001) are clogged and the gist on here seems to be that this is due to faulty parts on this particular model. The car is 6 years old with full Peugeot Service History, my extended warranty company are completely adamant they will not repair it under warranty, where do i stand with having the parts repaired by Peugeot, or at least them making some contribution to the cost as its acknowledged that the problem is with the part. -
Renault Fuego 4 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I've have just had a ride in an immaculate 2.0 GTX (french registered) one and it brought back some fond memories. Extremely comfortable in a way only an old Renault can be and quite fast, if a bit noisy and unsophisticated. I liked the black metallic paint and half moon alloys. Not bad for 1980. Sadly I haven't seen one in th UK for years, cars generally of this era were not well protected against rust and the Fuego was as prone as any. -

Volvo 760 Turbo oil leak 10 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The old (1989) Volvo seems to be leaking some oil. Definitely an oil leak rather than burning as the evidence is on the drive. I have checked all the obvious things such as filter and sump. Dry as a bone. I have spent most of the afternoon with the car over a pit, just can't trace it. -

Senior Citizen Tearaways !!! 28 Aug 2006 (Forum)
It seems that it's not only the youngsters and company car drivers that most of us consider need to exercise rather more care when driving but now it seems in my small North Somerset town, Senior Citizens will have to be included in this category. One old chap anyway! -
Key problems on '00 BMW 7 Series 20 Aug 2006 (Forum)
My father in law has just been charged over a hundred pounds for a new key for his BMW. The problem was the gradual inability of the key to lock/unlock the car remotely, which to me pointed to a new battery. The dealer simply ordered him a new key. I managed to get the old one apart just before he left today, but the battery didn't want to come out easily before he had to go. -
Citroen Warranty Offer 15 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Citroen UK have an excellent warranty offer on until 18th August, called Citroen Advantage. Any Citroen up to three years old can have its warranty extended by 1 year for only £179. Normal cost £450. Seems like a no-brainer to me, so I have signed up for our C8. We had a mailing from a dealer (not our regular one) about it, who are also offering to pay double this premium back to us if we 'change' our car at their garage. -
Audi Climate Control ? 26 Apr 2006 (Forum)
If it needs re-gassing, where can I go to get a good and cheap job done - not too keen on main dealers prices. The car's 4 years old 1.9TDi Avant. Many thanks, Underbonnet. -
BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - Loss of power 2 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Has anyone any ideas of the problem and if so is it a stock fault and do BMW help with costs? The car is four years old an has covered 40K miles as has been regularly serviced. Peter T slt
