it's a 1993 214 with a 1400cc k series twin cam.
took SHMBO shopping last night and she wouldn't start afterwards (the car) lots of clicking and whirring noises but nothing from the starter motor. After some head scratching the memory cells kicked in and reminded me of similar issues with my old mk2 Escort. So out with the hammer (doesn't everyone carry one?) and whacked the solenoid, tried the key and it started! Is this a known problem and is the solution the same as the Escort (ie take it off and clean it) or something else?

You might find the braided heavy wire from the solenoid to the motor proper has corroded away. I've seen this on a few of these. It can be seen with no dismantling.

If you're handy with spanners etc, it's quite easy to effect a very cheap repair.

If percussive stimulation was efficacious - then worn brushes are the most likely culprit and an exchange starter is the way to go.

Just check first that a corroded solenoid connexion wasn't moved at the same time.

if the problem is intermitent its most likely a electrical connection dont forget to check the low tension wire that comes off the ignition key and goes to the solenoid

Not on one of these. It's got a relay pack.

It wouldn't do any harm to remove the starter motor and give it the once over anyway. It may be there's clutch dust got onto the sliding shaft for the bendix and it needs cleaning. Brake dust cleaner is great for cleaning this as it leaves no residue. Don't use any lubricant when you re-assemble. At the same time you can check the cable from the solenoid to the starter. This is a weak point ane needs checking.

hope this helps
