  I went to halfords and they had red or blue coolant. The red seemed to be post 1997 and blue for older cars. Am I ok to use this blue coolant to top up my current green coolant? Should I siphon out as much of the old stuff as I can? Also the Haynes manual talks about the level being in the middle of min and max when cold?

  No, that is not a typo that is genuinely a tenth of the normal mileage warranty. Needless to say both my front shockers are leaking at 51K miles and 2.5 years old and VW have refused to replace them under warranty. This is the first car I have ever owned where the shock absorbers have failed so quickly. Is this a VW problem? Are all other manufacturers the same?

  AS I am coming back to the UK from the USA next month, looking to buy a 2/3 yr old car with great MPG and compact/mid sized 15k. Have looked at the 320d, a4, merc 220 cdi, golf tdi, passat tdi and mondeo tdci BUT My ? is....what toys are must haves to you.  ie traction control ESP,   electric everytthing, cruise   etc etc.

  Is the engine removed from the car when the timing belt is changed? If this is the case I think there is a strong possibility they have over tightened the bolt which has lead to it shearing off. Your help please.

  Shocked by the £296 that Fiat think I'll pay to service wifeys 3 year old Panda, I'll do the job myself. One question. I've not serviced a car for years, and have some Millers XFD full synthetic diesel oil in the garage, where its been for at least six years. Its sealed in its unopened container.

    However, on other ocasions there is no problem whatsoever.  Last month I had a new cambelt fitted (at 21,825 miles) when the car became 5 years old, and also the air conditioning unit was re-gassed.  Could there be any association with this work and the problem I am now experiencing, or is it perhaps due to a fault which lies somewhere else?

  Hi Fiesta 1.6 diesel, 2 years old. Had it from new, and is a fantastic car. I would like to see it last 200k+ miles. I don't know whether to: a) Increase oil changes to 6k using Ford (or equiv) 5w-30 semi b) Use fully synth oil for 12k service. c) Carry on with 5W-30 semi at 12k d) None of the above I'm playing it 'by the book' till the warranty expires.

  OK, quick question - looking at a 3-4 year old Focus 2 1.6 diesel. The same engine is in the Mazda3, and the cars are a similar price s/h. So, is the Mazda more reliable than the Focus? If you do a search for problems in the Backroom for Focus, and 3, you get far more Focus ones!

  Can anyone advise me please. Have a 4 year old Signum that is out of warranty and I am very upset that the Induction Manifold and Actuator now needs to be replaced. Not a technical car person myself and wondered if this was the normal life span of an Induction Manifold and Actuator as Vauxhall have quoted over £700 to replace.

  Is it OK to use VW Longlife III (5W30) oil in my Citroen 1.6HDI? I have a few litres left from my old car, and I'm too much of a skinflint to buy any more unless I need to ;-) . The specs look similar, but my handbook is in German so I can't tell if I'm missing any small print! Thanks Joe

  I prefer auto transmissions, always rent them, but own a manual because SWMBO was given the keys of an auto to move without any thought of instruction...

  The other tyre is a V thread Barum with about 3mm on it but both these tyres were on when we bought the car and it has done 15,000 miles since. We have two 6 month old Kumho's at the front. If we just replaced the urgent Pirreli would it be legal with a normal thread and a V thread on the same axle? It has alwyas passed the MOT like this but I always thought it was ilegal.

  Just had a new clutch/flywheel fitted to my 18-month-old, 18,000 mile Focus (is this a record?) Car has come back from dealer and clutch pedal is so low on the floor and with so little range of movement that clutch seems to be 'dragging' when I try to change gear (which happens with a clunk).

  Currently have a Passat estate (2007/07) 2.0 TDI SEL (170 bhp). Condition is OK and it is 18 months old with 35k on the clock. Pretty sure tyres will be due soon (x4) and next service interval must be imminent. This is a company car and I have the option to buy it. Any views on value? Parkers comes in at £12k PX but that seems on the high side to me and obviously want to get it as low as possible.

  I put some new glow plugs in SWMBO's 1.5 Saxo on Sunday, as the old ones were on the way out. The car started ok then, but since it has been an absolute pig with clouds of white smoke billowing out. I wonder if I have been sent a set of dodgy plugs or perhaps the relay has gone, maybe on the way out and not up to the new plugs?

  Apparenty the 1.6 is the PSA unit which if its the same one then a friend has one in his Peugeot 308 and it seems very refined. Also ive noticed that the 1.6 tdci's are generally more expensive. A lot of the car supermarket websites dont have the 1.6. I guess they are all ex rentals. Is the 1.8 an old engine ready to be replaced? thanks

  My 18 yr old son has just bought a worthy 1972 Viva 1256 cc as his first car /project. What is the right engine oil? The book says 20/50 - but is GTX high mileage (ie 15/40) fit for use? Eager to make use of new seal expander and anti burn additives but don't want to make matters worse etc.
