  This compares to the £300 paid for an 89F white Micra 1.2GS with 65k. It had 6 months MOT, but the reason why it sold for that much was probably down to its automatic gearbox. Finally a Rover 420GSi on a 93L with a couple of MOT failing faults sold for £51 with a months ticket and tax still left. One to watch The Chrysler 300C from last week didn’t make the £31,000 the company importing wanted.

In other halls, a top spec 14k mile 04 reg SAAB 9-3 Vecta automatic convertible bid to a provisional £20,750, a 71k mile 99T Jaguar S-Type 3.0 V6 auto sold for £6,400, a 76k mile 97P Jaguar XJ6 3.2 Executive (six, not V8) sold for a strong £4,625 and a 78k mile 97R Jaguar XK8 convertible sold for £15,850.

One was a useful spec 95k miles 2009/59 Mondeo 2.0TDCI Edge automatic estate that will probably see another 5,000 miles under its wheels as a mini-cab during the Christmas period. That went for £4,900. FIAT 500s are still much wanted and a black 18k mile 2002/59 Pop with a/c sold for £5,800.

  With the 110PS 1.5 diesel engine it is 17% more efficient than a torque converter automatic, saving around 30g/km CO2. In the Megane, emissions are 114g/km and in the Scenic 130g/km, which is very low for the benefit of an automatic transmission. Out on the road it’s vice-free with no electronically induced hesitation pulling out of side roads or onto roundabouts as can occur unpredictably with VAG DSGs.

The Mk2 Octavia vRS (2005-2013) suffers from the same ponderous automatic changes but here you have the option to swap it for a six-speed manual. Do that and you'll find yourself the sweet spot of the generations, courtesy of steering that's quick and direct while also feeling (newer models take note) like it's attached to the front wheels.
