Road Fund Licence query 24 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Does anyone know how far in advance the reminder for renewal comes through the post? The reason I ask is that mine runs out at the end of December, but I'm out of the country on holiday from mid Dec until after the new year. More likely than not, I will use the car to get to the airport (and obviously park up there), therefore I'll have a car on the road without a valid disc if the renewal doesn't get to me before I go away. -

Hello all, [ 2.0L 16v ecotec- auto 1994 ] found oil in my spark plug holes the other day, car was running a little sluggish. I believe it's the cam cover gasket gone, so I'm about to replace it. I've got the gasket, sealant rings for the bolt-holes & blue sealant. Can anyone advise me where exactly the sealant goes please? -
Pilot green Fuel Saver Any thoughts? 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
(assuming links are allowed) if not ebay v4o fuel saving http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/volvo-s40-v40-s60-s70-s80-v70-v60-v90-940-fuel-saver_W0QQitemZ150017992176QQihZ005QQcategoryZ43120QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem They certainly have all the banter and sales patter onthem, but in the real world do they have an effect on your consumption and or smooth running of the car? Is it worth spending the few quid on one or is it a gimmick and not worth it? Also anyone with a V40 have any ideas where to mount this? TTFN IAn -
CAT warning light on Audi S8 13 Jul 2006 (Forum)
It is totally kosher 120,000 miles with full history, it is coming from one of my suppliers so I know that he is being right up front with any issues with it. Today the CAT warning lamp came on and the engine started to run really rough, it then cleared again and was ok until this evening when it came on again and the engine was rough as if it was missing. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of same and what the result was, new CAT's I don't want to think about, maybe a Lamda sensor somewhere! -
Socially responsible tow bars? 10 Jul 2006 (Forum)
People who don't look where they are going might bark their shins? The extra weight and consequent fuel consumption might cause us to run out of oil sooner than we thought? I use my trailer 2 or 3 days a week in summer in the course of my business so I fall into HJ's exception group, but what of others? Hawkeye ----------------------------- Stranger in a strange land -
Opinions of Primera GT 5 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Needs to have similar performance, look fairly decent, cost around the same and have reasonable insurance and running costs. Doesn't have to be primera size, but i will be doing around 20k miles a year, on motorways mainly so don't want a micra size car. Secondly, is there anything specific that i should be checking for when viewing these? -
Darling to Visit Toyota Factory 12 May 2006 (Forum)
In this day and age, if a manufacturer such as Vauxhall and Peugeot have even voiced the possibility of plants or jobs to go, there is nothing that government can do about it. Government had enough practice with British Leyland to demonstrate why they should not run manufacturing. Both Peugeot and GM have problems of their own making whereas Toyota and others have clearly demonstrated as to how it could be done! The fact that Darling is getting a preview of a new version of the Avensis is in this case irrelevant. -
A small rant 4 May 2006 (Forum)
I'm sorry to inflict this on you, but an ad currently running on Virgin Radio for a certain no-win-no-fee law firm is driving me up the wall! The example bloke in it claims he was working for a national firm of tyre fitters when the jack collapsed on the lorry he was working under crushed him. -
Funny workshop tales 28 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I have 3 good friends all mechanics. 1 runs his own very well respected repair garage, 1 works on his own as a mech, the other a foreman in a ford main dealer 2 trained together, but all have worked together get them in a pub and get them talking about incedents that go on behind the reception desk My favorite. -

How long should we keep the Focus? 19 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I'll change the oil myself every 5k, and get it serviced to schedule, prob at the dealer, who is not expensive. When should we change it? 2 years, three, or run it into the ground? On a side point, we live at the end of a muddy track which can be very wet in winter, so it's often parked up quite wet underneath. This hastened the end of a Mk3 Golf. Any rust issues with the Focus models to date? -
Fiesta '96(P) No heating / cold air only 8 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I have just renewed the anti-freeze and the coolant level is fine but it was doing this before I changed the coolant anyway. The engine temperature always runs somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of the way up the guage so I am assuming this is OK. Does anyone have any ideas? I have got a Haynes manual if I need to change any parts - if so which ones and where do I get them from? -
How many police for one incident? 26 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I had the unfortunate experience of arriving at a traffic accident yesterday which had happened a few minutes before - I followed the ambulance to the scene. It appeared someone had been run over by a taxi. No other vehicles appeared to be involved. I passed the incident and went about my business. After 15 minutes I returned down the same stretch of road, which had been closed off so a quick detour through the estate was required. -
J Reg Rover 214 3 Door 21 Jan 2006 (Forum)

Ticking noise from 406 HDI 9 Jan 2006 (Forum)
And am I right in thinking the crankshaft pully is the one that is on the off side of the engine that all the aux pumps, PAS, etc run off? It's going in for a cam(timing) belt change shortly, would it be worth getting a replacement crankshaft pully for the mechanic to fit while he is doing the other belt? Thanks Max -
VR-4, Legacy TT or ??? 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Looking for some suggestions and possibly comments from anyone who has owned the above. After toying with the idea of buying a 944 a while back to run along with my Mondeo, I have now changed plan completely. The Mondeo has gone and I am now after some suggestions for a new (used) car. Requirements are as follows: - Must be FAST. Auto preferred. -
Rover 45 2.0 TDi starting problems 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
The car has covered 74,000 miles and although the battery appears to be the original the cranking speed seems fine and the battery condition indicator has always been green. Under normal conditions I hardly turn the key and she is away and runs great returning approx. 50-54mpg. Any ideas would be most welcome! -
Daytime Notice Lights 31 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I noticed in the thread about automated wipers and headlights a few posts from people in countries where Daytime Running Lights (or as we call them here in Canada, Daytime Notice Lights or DNLs) are required. On a recent visit to the UK I found that I really missed those lights on other cars; DNLs would really show up well on the high number of cloudy and dull weather days that you seem to have in the UK. -
Focus power loss 20 Dec 2005 (Forum)
The car now starts easily and idles steadily and smoothly at 750rpm but has no power. Stationary, the revs can be run up and down as normal, but the car has no power when driving. On a 2-mile straight road, I couldn't get above 60mph with my foot to the floor. I'm told the turbo is working and given the easy start and smooth idling I wouldn't think it is a compression problem. -
Mondeo TD Electrical problem 29 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Hi all, my mate's 1994 Mondog broke down on him two nights ago. I wasn't there when it stopped, but apparently the engine was running fine and then just died, (the oil pressure light came on but my mate assures me that this only came on after engine stopped) when he tried restarting it the car stuggled to turn over and the lights were dimming heavily.
