  • Confessions of a part time mimser 21 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I have to admit to mimsing in certain conditions. Let me first point out that I drive in the north of Spain, which is, of course, nothing like driving in the UK. (There are tolls everywhere, M'way cameras are mounted behind gantry-mounted LED panels the size of a tennis court and traffic police, apart from in the Basque Country, are all over the place.)
  • Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - Variable servicing - getting suspicious 16 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The shaper eyed amongst you will notice that it's only been 12,000 since the last one, where as the first two were at much greater intervals. We both drive the car the same way as we always have, and no one else uses it, so driving style can't be the reason for the difference. The reason I'm suspicious is that it's only been a couple of weeks since the car was in the dealer's workshop to have its cambelt changed.
  • Highway Code -- sidelights in the dark? 10 Sep 2008 (Forum)
They appear to be saying that using headlights at night is either optional or forbidden (the wording is poor so hard to tell which) if you are driving in a street-lit area. Surely this can't be right? On the one or two occasions that I've forgotten to switch headlights back on after stopping in a car park etc to drop someone off, and been driving around with sidelights, I've been flashed by other road users.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 1998 1.8 Vibrations above 3000rpm 8 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Hi all After some advice really. I bought myself a Mondeo 1.8LX at the weekend to replace a car that died. On the test drive I noticed a vibration through the wheels when going above 3000rpm in any gear. The dealer said that it could just be a bit of a mis-fire as the car had been taken out cold after standing for a while.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 97 1.8 Clutch/gearbox crunching sound 26 Aug 2008 (Forum)
It mostly happens when using the clutch in low gears (junctions etc) and it has happened when stationary (happened loads stationary in a traffic jam yesterday when i was resting my feet). It has also happened when driving in 3rd gear a few times. The sound only lasts a second or so and its getting more frequent. Tends to be worse on hot days, and it normally takes at least 10-15 mins worth of driving for the problem to start.
  • Insurance claims 12 Aug 2008 (Forum)
It seems very unjust that my son stands accused yet knows nothing of the allegations against him by the other party. There is no driving offence issue under process with this, merely the personal injury claim and what we consider to be an unwarranted blemish against my son?s driving record
  • Stylish medium estate emitting under 175 g/km 10 Aug 2008 (Forum)
They are both physically quite tall and substantial, and they have a small child who normally travels with enough equipment for an Everest attempt. She is the driver, and one who likes driving and does so briskly. He doesn't drive but is keenly fashion and style conscious in some ways. Both function in a fashionably greenish world, which means they don't want the emissions to be greater than those of their present car, a Chrysler PT.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1995 1.4 PTE SEFI erratic misfire when warm 10 Aug 2008 (Forum)
    It is now suggested that the ECU may be at fault and should be replaced, if this is done will the new unit require reprogramming to the car by a dealer, I am told that the coil unit will have to be replaced as well as part of the ECU system. Recently the car has started to show the symptoms within a few minutes of driving from cold and is becoming dangerous to drive. I don't know whether the erratic running is caused by ignition or fuel problems Can anyone help with any ideas which will be appreciated, otherwise I scrap the vehicle at the end of the month {subject header made less vague by including a brief summary of the question being asked}
  • Mrs Nsar is looking to change - suggestions please 9 Jul 2008 (Forum)
She drives a 53 plate Freelander Td4 S with about 60k on the clock - it was a demo when we got it. A bit scuffed and worn but nothing a bit of tlc wouldn't cure. Trade in price maybe £4500? She wants to reduce her carbon footprint and fuel costs.
  • I was an L Artic driver briefly.What went wrong? 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
After a while I was doing well, so I was told, but I gave it up. A problem. Guess what? not Cash, health or ability to actually drive the truck. Sure, I was pressed for time because I was studying. But this was Saturday mornings. Bet even GB can`t get the reason. Regards
  • Cars still being flogged to death, no saving then? 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Haven`t seen much change around the City ring roads in driving habits. Cars surging past on full turbo boost, then braking heavily at the next roundabout. Made me wonder, where`s the evidence of concern for saving money? Everyone was really flooring it on the ring road this AM.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - van 98 1.8td 75 - rough as old rope.... 2 Jun 2008 (Forum)
(almost like it's missing) rough idle when hot. white-ish smoke at idle. pulling away very sluggish then all of a sudden it springs into life and off we go....? very little to none smoke when driving along drives quite nice at speed but not sure if 80mph should be max speed for a turbo only just got the van and what i have been told is that a few things have been done recently.(i have receipts for parts changed...!)
  • Polar opposites. Can you beat this? 29 May 2008 (Forum)
Great air con (outside temps in the mini heatwave reaching 100f)decent stereo and such fun watching the wheels go round on the on-screen display. And averaged 49mpg which included spirited driving on Freeways, and up/down mountains! If only they were as cheap in the UK as the US I might even consider one. Even my CA friends, who drive a 4.7litre V8 Toyota Tundra and 2.5 Legacy Outback were impressed.

  • Hyundai i30 (2007 - ) - Head or heart in buying a car? 13 Apr 2008 (Forum)
and probably better built and more reliable. But, I am left wondering whether it will be as smooth and comfortable to drive. The interior of the Renault looks better as well. I have not driven either and won't do until I have the money to buy, but how would 'you' base your decision in a similar situation? Heart maybe for the Renault ,or more with the head and the Hyundai i30.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2001 1.8 LX - car stalling 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The garage also got a full diagnostic carried out and the engine was set up correctly. However, the car has started stalling again - when I am driving on the dual carriageway at speed then coming to a stop, the revs drop and I need to rev the engine to keep it live. The car is OK when driving slowly around town, but it is jumping a little when I put my foot down.
  • Filtering on a motor bike 29 Feb 2008 (Forum)
We are all used to poor driving, we see it whenever we use a vehicle, and I'm not an experienced filterer but I felt that there was an unusually strong concentration of the hard of understanding, the short-sighted and the plain bloody-minded; or am I just being paranoid?

  • Advice regarding a no insurance allegation. 8 Feb 2008 (Forum)
After checking up on my car, which was left overnight at the roadside, the cops obviously noticed that it wasn't insured. They then came to my house and spoke to my partner who told them I was at work. He doesn't drive and has nothing to do with the car, yet the Officers gave him a HORT1 requesting to check the insurance. Obviously the car is now insured but the HO/RT1 names him as the driver. The insurance does {this is transcribed exactly as the poster posed the question - PU} as he doesn't drive the car, so how can he walk into a cop shop and produce insurance documents that have nothing to do with him ?
