van 98 1.8td 75 - rough as old rope.... - nickffc
Hi People.....

found this forum at last.....

i have a a bit of a problem that i'm not sure has been covered.?
my P reg escort 1.8td van is running really bad an i need help!!!

hard to start in the mornning.
very rough idle when cold. (almost like it's missing)
rough idle when hot.
white-ish smoke at idle.
pulling away very sluggish then all of a sudden it springs into life and off we go....?
very little to none smoke when driving along
drives quite nice at speed but not sure if 80mph should be max speed for a turbo

only just got the van and what i have been told is that a few things have been done recently.(i have receipts for parts changed...!)

new injectors
new timing belt and tensioner.
new glow plugs
new oil
new oil filter
new air filter

i have been told that i should suspect two things

1. EGR valve
2. air flow meter.

now what......?

cheers

Nick

Might be an idea to check the tappets and the compressions. Were those belts fitted correctly....?

The cold-advance solenoid is another possible source of that sort of problem - almost sounds too bad to be that though.

Is this a retro-fit TD out of something else?

Vans were available with the TD engine but not the TDI engine.

RV engine not RF.

If this is the version with a primer button on the RHS of the engine then I would supect the cover has perished and you are sucking in air. Tape over this and give it a try. Regards Peter

Next step would be to blank off(or replace)EGR valve.A stuck open valve would certainly affect idle and performance. This is a 70ps engine and won't have the performance of the TDI(90ps) .

well.....

took off the egr today and found it was very clogged, got it clean using brake cleaner and the plunger now moves quite well but i have no way of telling weather it works under vacume.

it was in the closed position when i tool it off but i still tried blocking off the hole where the plunger is using some gasket paper. i presume this the part that needed blocking off??

anyway, after replacing the valve and starting the van nothing changed....so i'm still stuck with a smoking ole van.

any ideas what i need to look at now...

Many thanks for your replies

Nick

when you say tape over the primer button....this is the black plastic button on the right of the engine block? it has a load of pipes coming out of the part just underneth.?

tape up the whole thing?
