  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 2001 1.6 Stalling problem 22 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Most of my driving is short urban trips. It had a full service in March using genuine Vauxhall parts. & I use Tesco fuel. Can anybody help me before I spend a fortune getting a garage to systematically change all these parts until they found the cause or is it a combination of all these things anyway?
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 05 1.6 110 HDi FAP system codes 19 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Now by admission the car does not do many long trips and is not filled to the neck every time it gets low on fuel, so the top and bottom of my query is can a dealer ask me to pay for this work while it is still under warranty and is way below the 50,000 mile service cycle. (is it correct as I have read, that taking it on a long with a bit of right foot down, it will do a forced regeneration this way) Thanks in advance

However, with my current car, I do love the acceleration that it has, so I don't want anything to arthritic. I also am getting bored of spending so much at the fuel pumps so don't really want to go below about 38mpg. My two front runners at the moment are: Subaru Outback Diesel Citroen C-Crosser I will confess to not knowing much about either, apart from having a Mitsu Outlander on loan for a while.

  • MINI Cooper S R53 (2002 - 2007) - '06 R56 Needs headgasket replacing. Will it be ok? 21 Feb 2008 (Forum)
It all started off with a horrible diesel like rattle at cold start up, the dealer replaced the cam tensioner under warrenty, this had no effect and the problem continued, however to replace this the high pressure cam driven fuel pump had to be removed/replaced, My second trip to the dealer was to have this replaced as it was leaking post cam tensioner replacement, at the same time I told the dealer the diesel rattle sound at cold start up was still there, BMW tech reps were called in, they said they had seen this on the early build R56 engines and to replace the engine.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 2000 2.5 v6 - Won't start 11 Dec 2007 (Forum)
In the end it appeared to fix itself, then it went off again, my mate came round to have a look, he primed it several times before trying to start it and it fired up. Thinking that this pointed to a weak fuel pump, he replaced that with one from Ebay last night and the car seemed to be starting again, however, once again this morning I've gone out and she just won't fire. The smoke that comes out of the exhaust is black when cranking, and there is a healthy smell of petrol, so, what do people think may be the cause?
  • Suitable car for tall person with injured knee 7 Dec 2007 (Forum)
These have served me well and would no doubt continue to do so were it not for the fact that my commute has now increased from 14 miles a day to at least 44 and my fuel bill has unsurprisingly rocketed. I've had to put my environmental concerns as second to my need to be able to drive a car that does not cripple me and see me in hospital for the third knee op I'm desperately trying to avoid.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Another TDCI problem - smoke from radiator grille 10 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I called the RAC, the patrol bloke looked for a couple of mins, said he could see diesel over the front of the engine but could not see the actual leak. He suggested it was the fuel pump that was cracked which could cost around £1000 fitted. Now my question is if the pump was cracked would it take months to get worse? Would I notice any difference when driving (I havn't, it drives fine and has plenty of power).
  • Cumbria to Kent, not a usual BR thread 25 Apr 2007 (Forum)
All in all, a good run out, and I thought that you might enjoy reading about a trip that went well, rather than the steady diet of '2 hours to go 20 miles' that we all have to endure from time to time. p.s. Lake District to Kent and back on a single tank of fuel -- not bad for a (very) large car with an automatic gearbox and a high average speed. MTC
  • Underpowered Fiesta mk4 1.25 zetec 20 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Didn't notice it before, but it doesn't sound like a normal induction noise. I have changed/checked: Spark plugs, HT leads, fuel filter, vaccum hoses, sensor connectors, throttle body gaskets, inlet manifold gaskets. Diagnostics show no failed sensors but reports the error code P1270 (Engine RPM Or Speed Limiter Reached) this error re-occurs when cleared dispite revs kept below 5000rpm.
  • Legacy Turbos - Buying/Running 19 Mar 2007 (Forum)
    (F) whats the spares situation like for the parts that don't fit UK spec non-turbo bits (I imagine just engine and suspension stuff, as the rest must be same as UK spec ) (G) If driven sensibly/gently whats everyday mpg like - I know the standard car are thirsty ...... or is it just Fuel /service costs thats keeping the rpice "reasonable" !
  • C`Rail misfueling Engineers solutions? 18 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Misfueling costs to be limited to a tank drain exactly the same as if an old type engine was completely filled with the wrong fuel. ( Therefore completely removing the common rail issue and restoring the status quo) My thoughts on the subject Minimum expense all round would be some sort of filler neck device, but how would it work in Istanbul for example?
  • Service report regarding Suzuki 7 Nov 2006 (Forum)
The loan car mileage cost was £5.16 for a total of 43 miles that I did in it which I thought was reasonable and fair as I didnt put any petrol in it, just ran it on the fuel light! They also adjusted the clutch which improved the gearchange immeasurably. On the whole a great customer experience and I would recommend Co-op Motors in Kettering to any Suzuki owner.
  • So would you buy and oldish diesel.... 26 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I have thought about sourcing a W124 MB (probably a petrol auto), which would of course be cheaper, but over 15k miles a year, I am looking at spending a good slice more on fuel - which could go on potential diesel maintenance costs! Suggestions appreciated... Jon
  • Mazda 3 mini road test 29 Jun 2006 (Forum)
The ride was certainly acceptable on steel wheels and performance was fine, although it was a little breathless on the steep climb up to Jerusalem, when HGVs struggle to more than 5 or 10 mph. I did 500 miles and put in two tanks of fuel. That was a combination of high speed highway, very low speed city traffic and those hills near Jerusalem which really knock the economy. Alos it was 30 degrees C and the air con was on full. It had four one-shot windows, which is very good.
  • Car technology - Any real advances? 13 Jun 2006 (Forum)
A modern car needs the diagnostic computing power of NASA or the brains of Stephen Hawking when it goes wrong yet garages and main dealers still mis-diagnose, replace major components 'in the hope' that a problem can be fixed or simply 'don't know' The internal combustion engine hasn't fundamentally changed in over 100 years and in real world conditions, even average fuel consumption figures are only marginally improved over cars from a mere 20 - 30 years ago. Car manufacturers are in danger of disappearing up their own tail pipes as they collectively pat each other on the backs as they comment on how complex they can make the next new model...
  • 1982 2.8 Granada Pinking 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I am going to pour some redex into the spark plug recesses soon and leave it to soak for a bit, perhaps the engine's a bit coked up, although I would have thought modern fuels would be ok aqnd it get some good motorway runs? Any thoughts would be much appreciated
  • Tell me about... the BMW 3 Series 31 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I'd probably either go up myself, or perhaps get Joe Dowd to source me one. Anyone own one? What do you think? How does it compare to the 5 Series? What sort of fuel economy do you get? Evo Magazine suggests that the 330i is quite a rocketship, doing 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. I'm suprised I can even get an insurance quote, but hey, I won't knock it.
  • Advice on post-crash repair 22 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Looking down the car there is still clearly a slight buckle in the roof directly above the "c" pillar. There is a slight buckle in the lower part of the rear wing and the fuel filler does not fit flush. The rear wing has been replaced but the paint has not been carried forward onto the rear door to improve the colour match. All in all I'm not desperately happy as at a glance you can see the car has been twisted.
  • 96(N) Escort 1.8 Zetec Idle Speed 29 Jun 2005 (Forum)
The guy i bought it off (workmate) did say he thought it was holding back a little so i don't think this problem has always been there. I had it serviced when i got it (approx 18 months ago) including cambelt, oil change, plugs, fuel filter, air filter but it made no difference. It's done 117,000 miles, and i don't really want to start buying parts to guess what the problem may be. Does anyone know if replacing any of the following might cure the problem?
