  • Lambda Sensor Measurements - Volvo 240SE 17 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Car ( Volvo 240SE 1993, yes that one )is running rough so tapped into the Lambda ( Scope )signal and it is only crossing every few seconds and even then erratically. The car when hot is idling at about 1050 rpm ( High). Now if I crack the throttle open the voltage immediately drops to 0.1V and that is where it stays until you go back to idle then eventually it will cycle but very slowly and erratically.
  • new small exec car, which one? 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Choices hes narrowed down to are: BMW 320D Audi A4/A6 2.0TDi Alfa 157 JTD - may have to keep Audi a bit longer for this! He will be doing 40K a year and running costs are not that important as company pays, however he only gets 9 pence a mile for his diesel so needs to at least break even with this. Current Audi has been faultless however he ran Rover 800s for years so wont be too bothered about reliability!!

Hi all, I recently purchased a 53 plate one focus tdci (115ps) and Ive notcied that on long runs I'm getting around 40-45 mpg driving at around 65-70 (I'm no boy racer by any means). • Time to ditch the M25? 14 Oct 2005 (Forum)
After all the M1 is named after the Great North Road and the M4 after the Great West road, in Canada they have the Queen Elizabeth Way around Toronto, in the U.S. the experssways named after Presidents...and so on, we have the worlds largest ring road named er.. the M25... a non-discript 'A' road that runs through Surrey! Even the London Orbital name is not really used much. Mine would be 'The Queen Elizabeth II ring road' which would tie up with the bridge. Any other suggestions?
  • Audi A6 leak 9 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Could it be powersteering liquid or brake fluid? I have checked all levels and they are fine and the car itself runs fine without any warning signals. It is driving me mad can anyone suggest what this could be? Please help!
  • Penalties in AUS - help 8 Oct 2005 (Forum)
My daughter tells me she was not concentrating enough while driving and has been flashed running a red light in Perth WA. She has a UK and a WA licence. She has been working there for 7 months and IRC needed to get a WA licence after a 3 month grace period on her UK licence 1. Should she present her UK licence and would they let her off?
  • Polo central locking stops and starts? 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have a 1998 VW 1.4CL Polo. For the past month or so the central locking has been playing up. It works while the engine is running, or shortly after the engine has been switched off, but doesn't work when I try it from cold. If I open the driver's door only with engine cold (CL doesn't work), then start the engine, after a few seconds the other doors will all open.
  • In general which is better, Old or New?. 8 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I prefer old cars to new ones because they tend to have more character, and they're a lot easier and cheaper to repair, and more robust. Also I don't think that new cars today actually run any better than new cars did 20 years ago.... My own car is a 1994 Vauxhall Astra 1.7DTL. Is has no engine management, no ABS, no central locking, no electric windows or mirrors, no alarm or immobiliser, and no fancy bells and whistles that can and will go wrong, usually at great expense.
  • Reliable Diesel with excellent ride 1 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I am the proud owner of a Skoda Octavia TDI 90 which as all the surveys say you can't beat for reliability, build quality, low running costs, economy etc. After 80,000 miles in 6 years I am looking for a car with all the Octavia's virtues but a better ride quality (much better if possible) and a bit more performance to cope with mountain roads etc.
  • Joggers 22 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Why is it that a certain section of our exercise mad population think that it's perfectly ok to jog in the road rather than use the pavement? Seems a little odd to me. Especially when the chances of getting run over on the pavement are virtually nil. Also, why do people who are pushing wheelchairs think that the safest way to get from A to B is to push their charge in the gutter? The 'pilots' should stop for a second and just have a look at the mask of fear etched onto the face of the person in the chair.
  • Blinded by the lights 17 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I, myself, have had a couple of near misses in light rain when the road lighting reflected from the surface has masked the approach of a car running on sidelights only.
  • VW Golf - Diagnostic test in NW London? 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Can anyone recommend somewhere in NW London to get a diagnostic test done on a G reg 1990 VW Golf. I think the problem is with the carburettor. The car runs quite smooth with the choke pulled out, but is very juddery and tends to misfire when the choke is in. Also, when I changed the spark plugs the haynes manual seemed to say I had an over rich fuel mixture.
  • Peugeot 205 Diesel, K plate 7 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Even with a good battery, you can usually crank it on and off for a good few mins before it will go. Once running, its fine and does charge the battery. Often you will need to jump it as the battery will be flat before it starts. Someone mentioned it maybe glow plugs. I am of an electrical rather than mechanical background.
  • Vectra water loss.Inline valve? 3 Aug 2005 (Forum)
On the back of the engine on my 97 Vectra diesel, there seems to be a black valve of some sort, that is inline on the water system,to the heater. It also has a small black push on pipe, much like a vacuum pipe on an old carburettor engine. This seems to have a small leak, but I think under pressure, and the faster the engine runs,it is obviously losing more water,as the level in my header tank can go down, even if I've filled it up.There's no water in the oil,so the head gasket would appear to be ok,and I think it possibly unlikely the head could be cracked,so this may be the culprit.
  • Vectra clutch slip 27 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I doubt very much it's wheel spin :-) Does anyone know if it's a known problem or am I simply making too much progress legally? There is no point taking it to the local dealer as it only happens after a long run and it behaves impeccably locally. They are hardly likely to take it on a long test drive nor would I want it driven so by a fitter for such miles. It is tempting to drive it 'till it breaks (If I try hard enough I'm sure I could do it in a few days) and then get them to fix it.
  • 99 vectra air con 26 Jul 2005 (Forum)
hi all i have had my vectra air con regassed three times with the green dye also put in.it has took nearly four months to find the leak but finally shown up.i dont know much about air con systems so to describe it. its on one of the two valves with wires on them on a single metal pipe behind the rad running at the bottom.what are they? are they easy to fix .are they screwed in on o rings as one of them was loose slightly (green dye all over it).so tweeked it up , fingers crossed. if it carries on to lose gas is the stuff that halfords sell to stop air con leaks any good in stoping leaks or is it best to stay away from theese products. cheers dave
  • Dings 'n things 25 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I've just been dinged in a carpark. Because of the height of the ding I am fairly sure that it was a 4x4 on the school run. I am fully with the Tory grandee who proposes a £1000 yearly tax on 4x4s if it hits the person who dinged my car. The indent is just where the dent man can't get to it. One of my workmates, with an R reg. big Jaguar, makes sure that he doesn't collect any by intruding quite a lot into the adjoining parking space.
  • strange vibration 1986 Volvo 360 7 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I've tried shorting out each of the plugs in turn and its still there. also have removed all belts with no change. I tried running with the timing belt cover off to see if there was any vibration in the belt. Its not there when cold though. Any other ideas where to look? I know the exhaust vibrates a bit, but thats a different type of lower pitched rumble, this is higher pitched.
  • '02 Mondeo aircon / climate 21 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I have a slight problem with my '02 Mondeo TDCi Ghia X, when the aircon or climate are switched on and I am sitting in traffic or travelling slowly I can hear a cooling fan come on for a second and then switch off again, on again, off again etc etc, although the aircon etc seems to work OK the fans never previously did this, the dealer diagnosed low gas pressure though topping up did not cure it, they are now saying it is the "low speed fan" that is cutting in and out though the "high speed fan" is ok, they need to have the car back in to run diagnostics to determine the cause, anyone have any ideas? Also can anyone advise as to under what conditions these respective fans are supoosed to opperate? Many thanks.
