VW Golf - Diagnostic test in NW London? - franco

Can anyone recommend somewhere in NW London to get a diagnostic test done on a G reg 1990 VW Golf. I think the problem is with the carburettor. The car runs quite smooth with the choke pulled out, but is very juddery and tends to misfire when the choke is in.

Also, when I changed the spark plugs the haynes manual seemed to say I had an over rich fuel mixture. I woouldn't fancy trying adjusting it as a DIY thing because there could be so many other things wrong. It sounds a bit tappety as well.

Also how much would I expect to pay? does it cost a lot extra if they have to start making adjustments to the carb etc??

Does this mean that you have a manual choke, operated using a pull out knob on the dashboard? As far as I?m aware, all post 1985 (ish) VW's had carburetors with an automatic choke. But someone more qualified should correct me on that one.

In which case, it may be that there has been a manual system installed by a previous owner. With any luck, it could be that the linkage/mechanism just needs lubricating. You may have pushed the choke 'in' but the cable me be tight and thus hasn't fully released the choke.

If this isn't the case, it could be a host of other issues not necessarily linked to the carburetor or being expensive to fix. How about the air filter? Is this new or showing signs of high mileage? How about an air intake leak?

Any reputable garage (someone on here must know a one) should be able to check the carb for wear and tear, and/or adjust the mixture which doesn't take long.

Sorry I haven?t been able to suggest a garage franco. Also, please bear in mind I?m no mechanic, just throwing some ideas around you understand.

Good ideas though. Actually there is some air intake as I have to buy a replacement hose for the air cleaner, but something tells me that won't be the only issue. There is definately something with the carb judging by the old spark plugs.
