  • Mopeds. 20 Sep 2001 (Forum)
We chatted about what it cost him to buy, and the cost of running it. Here are the figures: Cost of moped £1600. Insurance £300 per year Tax £15 per year Fuel £4.40 per tank Mpg ? About 120 ! It looks the business to be honest with you, apart from when it rains when it can get a bit unpleasant. But he's got his independance and that's got to be worth something.
  • Air conditioner servicing 4 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I thought the a/c was fairly strong on my '97 A4, but after a recharge (The system was found the be some 200g down on gas) the system is much more efficient, probably saving me fuel. So, if we do a recharge, the customer has a direct benefit from the work by the means of better a/c operation. I would suggest a service interval of 24-36 months for the a/c system. Just out of interest, I thought it might be an interesting exercise to couple the machine up to a NEW car and see what amount of gas we could get out, compared to the data label placed under the bonnet.
  • Mondeo Diesel 19 Mar 2001 (Forum)
From what he tells me it sounds as if the turbo is not coming in from low revs but this is only a guess. His job is driving Texaco fuel tankers on regular nights and he was telling me today about meeting a chap the other night who is one of Fords leading training engineers who travels all over the continent training mechanics on diesel engines etc.
  • Which Compact Family Estate? 23 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I don't want to go for a loan, so my Max budget is 12k. MPG matters, but I am not looking for a very fuel-efficient vehicle. I only drive in the city on weekdays, and a single trip is probably not more than 3 to 6 miles. Every Saturday or alternate Saturday, our family go out and drive between 150 to 200 miles (return trip).
  • Volkswagen Golf - MK6 Golf - Purchasing Query 30 Oct 2021 (Forum)
Insurance is very similar for all 3 cars, even on the 140 BHP 2.0 TDI and 160 BHP 1.4 TSI Petrol.  Fuel costs are about £400.00 more a year on the 1.4 TSI petrol, based on current costs and HJ real world MPG figures (10K miles a year).   This is however offset by DPF concerns, based on my driving habits.

BS-S1 was massively fluctuating from like 0.005 to 0.700V but BS-S2 remained constant at 0.665V I then got it to do the test and under the Bank1-Sensor test, there was one called $80 that showed these results: Test ID: $80 Test Value: 0.7448V Minimum Limit: 0.5000V Maximum Limit: 0.0000V Status: Fail Some of the other readings at idle once it'd been running 10 mins or so: Absolute Throttle Position: 13.7% to 14.1% Intake Manifold Abolsure Pressure: 7.5% to 7.8% Short Term Fuel Trim: minus 3.9 to 0.8 Long Term Fuel Trim: 7.8% Ignition Timing Advance For #1 Cylinder: 3.5 to 9.5 Is this an indication of a vacuum leak somewhere?
  • Subaru Impreza 2.0 - performance flatspot 21 Sep 2016 (Forum)
i have tried to reset the ecu, but it will work better just for about 2 days and then go back again to working horribly. i have been to 5 mechanics . they said the changing of the rims will not cause that, just coincidence. i have changed new fuel filter with regulator. also the fuel pump. we put a gauge to check the psi of the pump and it held up fine- no problems.serviced the air filter. i changed the knock sensor. i replaced the air flow sensor. i serviced the injectors and throttle body four times at different mechanics. i changed the timing belt and tension-er and pulleys - . i changed the engine and transmission oils. i changed the spark plugs. sometimes on the highway the 4th gear will take long to go in and when i try to kick down, it will not and the same gear will run. the 1st and second gear will sometimes go in with a hard buck.
  • subaru impreza 2006 2.0 R - subaru impreza 2006 2.0R engine PROBLEMS !! 19 Sep 2016 (Forum)
hi, i have a 2006 impreza 2.0 r engine . i bought the car from the previous owner in may 2015. for 1 month the car worked well. as soon as you touch the gas pedal it will shoot off, acceleration great and top speed about 190 km. as soon as i changed the rim and tyres it died. it had 16's and i put 17's, but the manual said i can make that change. it started to flat spot bad and go dead. it will crawl up small hills gas pedal to board. on flat roads as well, flat spot, dead, no acceleration. then suddenly it will take off again with a spurt but will soon die down again. on the highway 3rd and 4th gears no problems. it will fly. but it never worked again as it did the first month.i have tried to reset the ecu, but it will work better just for about 2 days and then go back again to working horribly. i have been to 5 mechanics . they said the changing of the rims will not cause that, just coincidence. i have changed new fuel filter with regulator. also the fuel pump. we put a gauge to check the psi of the pump and it held up fine- no problems.serviced the air filter. i changed the knock sensor. i replaced the air flow sensor. i serviced the injectors and throttle body four times at different mechanics. i changed the timing belt and tension-er and pulleys - . i changed the engine and transmission oils. i changed the spark plugs. sometimes on the highway the 4th gear will take long to go in and when i try to kick down, it will not and the same gear will run. the 1st and second gear will sometimes go in with a hard buck.when i apply brakes to stop, while slowing down i can feel the hard buck from the engine or there abouts as the car comes to a stop.i scanned the car at 6 mechanics!
  • Skoda Octavia Hatchback - Is there such a thing as an SUV for SPORTS? 12 Mar 2015 (Forum)
So far, I have tried the Yeti, Tiguan, BMW X-3, Ford Kuga, Honda CR-V, Volvo XC60 and written off several others because the difference in fuel economy and performance from their old fashioned auto boxes is more than I want to give up. Has anyone come across an SUV that has a useful (seats up) boot?  Failing that, is there such a thing as a proper tonneau cover to use in a Tiguan or Yeti with the seats down?
  • VW Golf Mark V - What legally can I do ? Home trader car. 11 Nov 2010 (Forum)
However I am concerned that a) the petrol in the vehicle at the time of purchase a quarter of a tank should be mine b) that the car was driven at high speed prior to my arrival because that engine was very hot even after two hours on a cool night c) that running the vehicle down to the last bar may have caused it to trigger the warning light from lack of fuel or since I do not know the state of the fuel filter, some sludge at the bottom of the tank. If the vehicle was as I had seen it on the 6th with the petrol intact I do not believe this would have happened, or if it being very hot  was the cause, as I await the diagnostic tomorrow morning.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Diesel versus Mazda 6 Petrol 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I've had my Mazda 6 a year now, and it is a very nice car. However, it drinks like a fish and I'm a bit bored of sticking well over a hundred quid of fuel in it every month just to toodle around town delivering children and getting to work and back. I never get more than 275 miles out of a 65 pound fill, which is a bit galling after getting the best part of 450 miles out of a tank of diesel (around town too) when I had my FIAT Stilo Multiwagon.
  • Daewoo Nexia Head Gasket 14 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I will use this thread for any questions I have on this job Daewoo Nexia 1.5L 8V SOHC 1997 P reg, Engine is basically a vauxhall SOHC I have so far removed the air box, wiring loom from top of engine, alternator & belt, Air con belt, exhaust manifold heatshield, fuel feed pipe and return from the fuel rail. Top half timing belt cover, and eventually got the lower half TB cover off aswell. I have lined up the timing marks top and bottom, top slightly out when bottom lined up, so I marked where the top was (with bottom lined up).
  • 2019 Peugeot 2008 1.2puretech 130 EAT6 - Oil burner? 8 Feb 2025 (Forum)
There are 40mm, equating to 1 litre I believe,  between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick.  The level is currently 28mm below the max mark which, assuming zero fuel dilution and a regular 25mls per mm, equates to 700mls oil use, i.e. around 14,000 miles per litre.  That seems fine to me.  I shall refill with my usual choice of Castrol Magnatec 0-30 which, despite Halford's robot saying it's probably not suitable for our car, clearly has the required PSA spec B71 2312 printed on the label.
  • Nissan Micra K14 2018 1.5 diesel 2018 - Multiple Warning Lights all at once 28 Sep 2024 (Forum)
This has been a wonderfully reliable well running car giving no problems. About a month ago, I stopped early one morning in very heavy rain to get fuel. When I restarted journey, Traction control, ABS Braking, Start stop, Tire pressure and Radar collision warnings all came on. (no tire pressure warning when you enter that screen/menu but dash warning still on) After about 60 miles and parking for a couple of hours all warnings had gone and I put it down to the rain as it was now dry.

New (secondhand) family wagon will need to be able to carry 5 in comfort with luggage, it’ll need to cope with my mountain bike in the back plus hillwalking gear etc etc for adventures and it’ll need to be reliable, decent on fuel, ULEZ friendly and long lived - as I actually hate buying cars. Shortlist so far (before being tried for size) includes. Honda CRV 1.6 DTEC 2wd Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv Estate Mazda CX5 2.0 Skyactiv Audi A4 1.4 TSI Avant Audi Q3 1.4 TSi Sadly no Toyota’s permitted due to gaffers inability to get on with the seats in my old Avensis.
  • Ford Focus 1.0 ecoboost 2016 - Should I replace my catalytic converter? 9 Oct 2023 (Forum)
I've taken it to two different garages who have told me it's an emissions fault, and a) use high grade fuel, then b) replace the O2 sensor (which they did), then c) repair the ECU. After that final advise I took it to the main dealer who said the ECU needed updating (which they did), and after the light turned on again(!!)
  • Choosing an SUV for long drives? 28 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I am aware of the CR-V, RAV4, Kodiaq, Sportage, Kuga, CX-5, CX-60, XC40, XC60, XC90. I have test driven several of these and I have no real complaints, aside from poor fuel efficiency on some – particularly new petrol and hybrid CR-Vs. I would prefer not to spend more than £20k. I'd rather not have to spend that much, but it does seem to be a seller's market at the moment.
  • Need a new car, how much should I spend? 2 Feb 2023 (Forum)
I don't have a family so I don't care about the size, and have absolutely no requirements apart from in getting me around and being reasonably fuel efficient  / cheap to insure if possible.  I live in Warrington and would be happy to travel to view potential buys but my car isn't driving at the moment so my search radius may be a bit limited!
  • Mazda 3 2.2 Sport Nav '17 - Mazda 3 2.2 Skyactiv Diesel Facelift issues 27 Apr 2022 (Forum)
Hi All, I've read up as much as possible on the limited amount of information available on the Mazda 2.2 diesel (2017). It seems they used to be very problematic with dumping fuel into the oil, DPF blocking, EGR valves etc... a lot of the forums I've read tend to talk about pre 2017 models; making me unsure if these issues are still present in the facelift model. I live in Bristol where I do quite a bit of stop start but a good 1.5 hr run at least once a fortnight to south wales.
  • Jaguar XF 2.0D - Broken rocker arms, after timing belt replaced 30 Mar 2021 (Forum)
They claim this is totally unrelated to the timing belt change and think it is due to an injector failing and causing the other three injectors to over-compensate, resulting in the engine bores being flooded with fuel and hydraulic locking, and is purely coincidental it happened after they worked on the car, which incidentally has run smoothly and efficiently for the past 5 years. They now expect me to foot a massive repair bill immediately after a major service and timing belt change which cost well into 4 figures.
