  • Mondeo - Reving, smoke a new Solenoid 14 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Now I've noticed the engine revving when Im accelerating - more than "normal" and taking the meter to 4,000 revs until the speed catches up - and this happens in all gears. Also, theres sometimes a smell of diesal inside the car as Im driving and I've noticed fuel smears on the road occasionally after parking. Ive booked it back in but they can't see it until 23rd - any tips on what to tell them - or how to stop them ripping me off? Much appreciated x

and the car was merely telling us via the warning light whereas other diesel engines car may not?? Or could it be the local diesel fuel I get???
  • Channel 4 programme 17 Jan 2005 (Forum)
With China and India quickly becoming fully-fledged car-owning societies the demand for oil will go up, hastening the depletion of fossil fuel reserves. Oh, and what about Jesus's car - that was to do with an evengelistic preacher who drives a Prius! cheers, Sofa Spud
  • K-reg 106 keeps stalling 3 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I've got a 1992 106 with 1.0 litre engine and the bosch monopoint fuel-injection system. It starts off fine, no problems and goes like a charm till I stop. If I then wait, say, 15 minutes, and try to start it up again warm, the car will start fine but stall just as I depress the accelerator, i.e just off the idle stop.
  • Leon TDI - NSF Tyre Wear 2 Jan 2005 (Forum)
The steering, suspension, alloys have not been modified in any way I have my alignment checked reqularly and has only required adjustment when I last replaced my front tyres. My fuel economy is what I would expect from my driving style, on average 40 - 45 MPG. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to why this one wheel wears itself about 5,000 miles before its opposite number. Comments appreciated....
  • Diesel servicing costs? 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Doing my spreadsheet calculations, it looks like diesel is the way to go (assuming 10mpg gap between diesel and petrol this equates to about a £500 saving pa in fuel costs) Question is, how can I quantify the difference in servicing costs between the 2 engine types? I've heard on here that diesels cost more to service, but how much more - £100? £200? £500? Assume it's about £200 difference, this means that getting a petrol would cost me net £300 more in running costs pa - i.e. not much difference.
  • Starting problem on Audi A6 2.5 TDI 25 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I recently replaced all 6 of the glow-plugs as a first stab at fixing it, but it only made a marginal difference to the car's starting performance. I nearly always use Shell branded Diesel and have also tried one of the 3rd party (Redex) fuel additives for cleaning the injectors. Does anyone have an constructive suggestions as to what other things might be causing this problem?
  • Audi RS4 v BMW M5 service costs?? 23 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I hope to be in a position next year to hand my Mondeo TDCi to my wife and replace her (my) Toledo 1.8T Sport with something a bit quicker as the company will be paying for fuel. Insurance is quite reasonable on these two cars considering I am 27 and my wife 23 (£540 - 850 fully comp). I have recently been out in a German colleagues Audi RS4 Avant which is now pushing out 470bhp (std 380bhp) and I was hooked.
  • LPG Conversion Problem. Toyota Carina. 14 Sep 2004 (Forum)
The car in question is mechanically sound. The system installed was a carburetor type installation and the car is now dual fuel with the ability to run on petrol and gas. I am having three problems with the car on gas (which does not occur on petrol) 1. The L.E.D switch keeps flashing red with the green light constantly on although the tank is completely full.
  • Subaru Misfire 1 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Since then, (this is going back some six to eight months)when it started he's had numerous tanks of fuel and has booked the car in to Subaru in Widnes (twice) and they couldn't find anything when they plugged it into the diagnostics. He gave me a lift from their house to a friend of mines this evening and it misfired once during the journey only for a few seconds then was OK again and he said that he filled up with Shell Optimax a few days ago and it's been running a lot better since it's had the Optimax although the misfire is still there.
  • Escort TD, Air locked???? 21 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Got out and checked the usual stuff and couldnt see anything wrong so got back in and it started, it did this 3 more times before i got home!! after looking into it a bit at home i could see rather a large air bubble in the fuel pipe between the filter and pump, thought i'd use this as an excuse to change the filter, after changing it there was loads of air in it so i cracked a jubilee clip just after a one way valve on the pipe and primed it with the plunger till diesel had forced all the air out.
  • VW Polo GT Intermittent problem 28 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I found that if you hardly touched the accelarator though it drove and if you put your foot down it would go to die but not actually stall. Has anyone got any thoughts? Have just purchased a new fuel filter but have not fitted it yet and changed the air filter.
  • BMW 318i hesitation, help!?! 6 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Now I'm driving it around and I get this really annoying slight hesitation that occurs when I'm accelerating fairly lighltly but with load, i.e. slightly up hill, and I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I've added 3 lots of injector cleaner, changed the plugs, air filter, in-line fuel filter and it's still happening!! Some guy test drove it the other day and he's dead keen on buying it. Luckily he didn't notice the hesitation but I wanna get it fixed for my peace of mind. I've taken it to my fall-back mechanic who checked the emissions and determined that the mixture was fine and he couldn't think what it could be.
  • Derv AND 2 star mix up 2 Jan 2004 (Forum)
\"customers who had diesel put into petrol cars will be fully compensated but if it happened the other way round it is different\" \"If more than 20 per cent of petrol was filled in to a diesel tank then it would cause damage to the car\" A customer complained after getting fuel that \"it sounded really weird\" so went to their garage who told her not to drive it. This was follwed by - without quotes but appears to be from the supermarket press officer. She said only 13 per cent had been filled which would not cause damage so therefore people would not be reimbursed.
  • K11 micra: flooded engine or flat batt'y 8 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Something I have easily fixed before a couple of times just by putting my foot to the floor and cranking. The recovery man cranked it for about 3 x 30 secs in a row, and also did a trick of removing the fuel pump fuse then cranking. It eventually spluttered into life, belching black smoke. The recovery man blamed the "ambient temperature sensor". Only £10 from the Nissan dealer, he reckoned. What are my strategies to prevent a recurrence of this?

  • Old VW Polo intermittant power loss 24 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Other \'signs of age\' and general recent features have been: - The idle jet has become blocked a couple of times. Easily cleared by AA/mechanic. - The (2 month old) fuel filter put in at the car\'s last service is very dirty for such a new filter. - Developed a slight oil leak. (Typically a few isolated drops on the ground below the engine after a drive). - Developed a slight coolant leak.
  • Cavalier 1.7 TD. Cold starting Problem. 22 Oct 2003 (Forum)
One day it wouldn\'t start at all, I could hear some compression/ignition going on (black smoke from the exhaust confirmed this), but never enough to start the engine . I thought it was a block/leak in the fuel line but couldn\'t find anything. I took it to a mechanic who replaced the glow plugs (I\'d only replaced the glow plugs a few months previously, although I did use budget plugs) and it started . Ever since that day (Last Feb) its got worse and worse on starting from cold.
  • petrol - a difference? 3 Sep 2003 (Forum)
But during the many times we took it to France we always filled it with 98 or 95 supermarket unleaded (there\'s a big difference in fuel prices between garages and supermarkets over here) and it never missed a beat. Since moving here I have put supermarket 95 unleaded in our Volvo 940 2 litre, old Honda Civic Shuttle and, currently, Honda 2 Litre Accord Coupe, without - apparently - the slightest problem.
  • Air conditioned classic 23 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I would be looking for something that would do around 30 ish mpg like my vitesse but preferably with a bigger fuel tank and definitely not a soft top.I really fancy an interceptor but at 12 mpg it is far too costly! Comfort is the main concern along with something that has good parts availability. Budget probably less than 5k and preferably closer to £3k.
